Resident Evil 4 Ultimate HD Edition PC

Uh, am I alone in being satisfied with the GC version? All these new platforms are great and all, but I still think the GC version is best.

Well, that cover is pretty great.

I don't even know how the fuck to hook my dusty-ass GameCube up to my Bravia. The laser is bad, with constant disc reading errors that I was getting even back in 2005 when I first played the game. Not to mention it runs in 4:3.

I'll take this Steam release, thanks.

Excellent

Excellent

Hopefully the person I'm showing the Gamefly link to gets the hint. For those who have bought RE4 via Gamefly already, was the code sent out or will it be more like MGR where they held the codes for a while?

You'll get it the night before the game release.

How can you say the GC version is best, when this hasn't been released and the wii, 360, and ps3 versions are already better? ;P

Never bothered me much, but I have pretty low standards. I think the GC version still looks great.

Fair enough. I really can't play SD games on my 1080p screen. I'd rather hook up an old CRT TV if I wanted to play SD games.

And this PC version will run at 60fps. Even if you don't care about resolution that makes a big difference as it directly affects the gameplay.

Normally I just wouldn't buy it, since I can already play my Wii version on Dolphin, but the better textures and, most of all, 60fps wins the battle to get my money.

Nice way to redeem for the old shitty port that came out 2 years after the original release, I still can't understand why they let such a game port be botched.

Yeah it's quite remarkable how far Capcom have come since then. All their ports since DMC4 are just sublime.

I would really like to hear a full retrospective on the original port and this new one.

Capcom seems to have gone out of their way on this one and delivered a solid product. Really came out of nowhere too.

Not entirely. IIRC Capcom had a survey some months back last year asking about ports/PC and stuff

Q: What are the available graphics options?
A: RE4 is optimized for 1920x1080 at 60fps. Anything beyond 1080p has not formally been tested but we have seen it perform fine on 2560x1600, 2560x1440 and 1920x1200. The game will also have anti-aliasing up to 8X, three shadow quality settings, HD/SD texture quality toggle and one other "fun" option we'll keep to ourselves for now. Tinkerers will also find other graphics options that work best for them :)

Q: I hear the game now natively supports mouse controls How does it work?
A: Traversal: Mouse movement will be used to free-roam camera view during traversal while WASD keys controls character movement on the map (keys are remappable).

Shooting mechanics: Hold down the right-click button to enter aim mode. During aim-mode, mouse movement will be used to control the laser pointer. Simply point the laser to the desired target and tap left-click to fire. Same for knifing - hold Space bar and tap left-click. Really simple.

Q: What customization options are available in the game?
A: Control options wise, it will have the following:
1. Custom key binding per action for keyboard users
2. Three preset control schemes for gamepad users
3. Inverted aim ON/OFF
4. Mouse acceleration ON/OFF
5. Mouse sensitivity 1 ~ 30
6. game pad vibration ON/OFF

Q: What version of RE4 is the new Steam version based on?
A: It's based on the Xbox 360 version, which in turn is based on the GameCube / Wii versions.

Q: Why is the game 15GB when past versions were much smaller?
A: About 11GB of the data is the game itself. 1.6GB are the original SD textures, leaving roughly 5GB for the HD texture pack.

Q: Can v-sync be turned on/off?
A: A number of other undocumented graphics settings can be tweaked via config.ini, but these functions are not officially supported by Capcom. Use at your own risk.

Q: What is the maximum frame rate?
A: The in-game menu provides two options - Fixed 30fps and Fixed 60fps

Q: Screen seems too bright/dark. Can it be adjusted?
A: Yes, there is a slider in the menu that allows you to fine-tune the brightness level.

Q: Are the cutscenes realtime or pre-rendered movie files?
A: Only the "Separate Ways" cutscenes are movie files. The rest of the game cutscenes are realtime.

Q: What are the available controller options?
A: The game supports full mouse/keyboard control as well as XInput-based devices such as the Xbox 360 game pad. Inventory management is also done via keyboard or game pad.

Q: When will I receive my pre-purchase bonus content?
A: The digital soundtrack and digital archives will be available on launch day (Feb 28 2014)

Q: I'm a huge RE4 fan! Tell me more about the Pre-purchase bonus content. What exactly is included?
A: Soundtrack: The soundtrack comes from a two-disc CD compilation sold in Japan. It's sampled at 320kbps/48Hz in MP3 format for maximum compatibility while keeping file size manageable for your portable device. Disc 1 "Darkness Side" contains 32 tracks while Disc 2 "Aggressive Side" includes 30 tracks. All in all, 140+ minutes for your listening pleasure.

Full Color Digital Archive: The 80+ page Digital Archive is not your typical art book. It comes from our 'Resident Evil Archives' Volume II encyclopedia published and sold by our friends at BradyGames. We've taken the best parts from the Archives featuring Resident Evil 4 characters, creatures, story, concept art, and more! Love the Resident Evil lore and want to know more? Check out Volume 1 covering events taking place between 1960 ~ 1998 while Volume 2 covers year 2002 through 2009.

Q: Are there achievements and trading cards?
A: Yes to both; the former are based on the Xbox 360 Achievements.

Q: I heard rumors of the German version being censored. Is this true?
A: No. RE4 fans in Germany can enjoy RE4 in it's full, uncensored g(l)ory. However, Assignment Ada and Mercenaries unfortunately is not included in the German version. Separate Ways, Movie Viewer, and Ada's Report ARE included and unlockable.

As an aside, the Hand Canon becomes available when you beat the main story in Professional difficulty while completing Separate Ways unlocks the Chicago Typwriter.

Q: There's a thriving modding community for the previous PC version. Any plan for Workshop support in this version?
A: There are no plans to add Steam Workshop given technical challenges working with legacy code from 2005. At the same time, we will not stop modders from toying around with the Steamworks edition. Modding is not supported by Capcom, so play at your own risk.

Q: Do you have any plans to support DirectX 10, 11, and beyond?
A: No. The game does not use nor require advanced functions offered through DX10/11. The game will utilize DirectX 9.0c for maximum OS compatibility.

Sounds good, although vsync should have been an officially supported setting instead of a undocumented config.ini tweak that won't be officially supported.

I wonder what other tweaks one can do with the config.ini
120 fps? Because he says the in-game menu setting max is 60 fps, perhaps suggesting out of the game, in the config.ini, you can set it higher.

Wait V-Sync has to be set in the ini file?

goddammit

Well, looking at the Steam discussions forum, I'm seeing a lot of requests for RE 1-3 and Code Veronica.

I can see Capcom releasing Code Veronica after RE4 comes out. Then they'll do 1-3.

Is v-sync enabled by default? This game won't have screen-tearing, will it?

I hope REmake makes it to the PC at some point.

That's a pretty neat thing to explicitly have a statement on

German version uncensored but omitting Assignment Ada and Mercenaries? Odd exclusions.

It seems like the mouse input is going to differ from Wiimote implementation and RE5's mouse controls. Wonder how it'll end up feeling.

Alright guys, this may sound like the most petty/first-world problem thing ever, but I'm worried the game will be too easy with the precision of a mouse. Do you think I should play on hard?

There is no hard mode. You can play on easy or normal for your first playthrough. Then you unlock professional which is quite a bit harder than normal (but still quite a bit easier than RE5's professional mode if you've played that: RE5 is harder on professional using kb/m than RE4 using a pad).

Playing with the Wiimote made the game pretty easy, so I'd imagine it can only be the same or worse with a mouse.

Using the Wiimote made the game even more fun imo, though. Didn't really care that it was easier.

It's probably because of how they handle the HUD in the game.

It's actually just rendered as part of the game world.

You can see an example from a GIF I made from the Wii version here.

Put this in that video game secrets thread!

I don't know if REmake and Zero not being ported outside of Nintendo is due to exclusivity clauses or Capcom just being stubborn about the pre-rendered backgrounds.

Ah, I didn't realise it still used pre-rendered backgrounds. That could be a problem if they were created solely with the Gamecube/Wii in mind.

if it doesnt come first to consoles, pc has no chance.

At least there's dolphin on pc.

Stranger things have happened!

Any guesses what this is about?

An option to play the game as it is in the previous (unpatched) PC port. :p

Question is: If you have Steam set to English, does it switch language to English but still keep the arbitary missing content from the German version?

Have yet to buy a censored game on STEAM and will not break that rule for RE4.
Haven't bought L4D 1&2, HL2, SNIPER ELITE V2 and all the other craptastic German censored versions.

Wii + controller, boom. (And no way could my PC run this at optimal settings anyway.)
I got to try the Wii edition during the holidays but I don't know, it didn't feel very good to me. Perhaps my sensitivity settings were screwed up (I did try changing them without any improvement) but it felt very sluggish. Maybe I was perturbed by the low framerate (it felt worse than it should even at 30 fps though), but regardless I longed for playing it with a controller again.

I'm glad that this version supports that although I won't be able to plug in the GC controllers to my PC without some addons :/

Holy friggin fuck. Good thing I haven't preordered.

Where to get non-german keys?

I don't think any other stores (outside of Steam itself, that is) are selling the game just yet. If you're interested I may be able to get you a copy for $15 or $15.50 through my trader on Steam (ditto for anybody else who can't order through GameFly).

Thanks JaseC. I'll get back to you when I'm ready.

RU or ROW? Might be interested, since I'm not sure what kind of key I would be getting through Gamefly. Did Gamefly(.co.uk) ever send out country specific keys (DE) that we know of, or should I get a EU/UK/ROW key from them?
