God damnit. Stan needs to calm down. He looks out of sorts.

Playing against an obviously injured guy tends to do that to you. You lose focus and motivation.

Given that Nadal is playing a lot better now, he REALLY needs to get his focus back and bring this home. He deserves it after that first set.

I think Stan will get his concentration back en win this set. I'm actually relieved Nadal is somewhat competitive now. It's closer to a real final.

I think the best thing to do about this match is to tell future generations they were trialling best of one set finals and show them just the first set. Nothing else need ever be mentioned.

Which is problematic if you want to win a championship in any sport. You should went to go in for the kill while they're hurt and off their game instead of letting up.

Really? At this point I just want a Stan win, he deserves it. This is some mental torture he's under.

He deserves it, but what would give you more satisfaction, Stan battling to a 4 or 5 set victory against a rejuvenated Nadal or a walkover? You can have that euphoria or you can have that surreal, deflated feeling and wonder what might have been had Nadal been able to overcome his injury.

Nadal probably took a lot out of himself to win that set. It's similar to the fourth set in the US Open in 2011. Nadal won it, but had nothing left in the fourth. I see a similar situation here.

For sure, but there's not that many athletes that tend to do that. And tennis has always been a kind of a gentlemen's sport I guess :lol.

yeah, I'd be pretty pleased if Stan won in 4 or 5, but if he loses because he just mentally isn't there, the result would just feel really... awful. I don't know, I have mixed feelings. I have a lot more respect for Nadal for sticking through it, but at the same time, I don't know. It's just been such a strange match, reallu.

Feel kind of terrible for Wawrinka. if he wins then his first Slam win ever is tainted. If he loses, then he lost to a handicapped Nadal(!!!!!!!!!!!).

he won the first set fair and square. Shouldn't be asterix'd. It's not like Nadal was dominating or even playing better at all up until his injury. Stan was in the zone.

I agree though, however this match ends, it just won't feel perfectly right.

Heh. I've always looked at it that way I guess. You can't give up and let up because they're hurt. Keep the same intensity and take advantage. Nothing ungentlemanly about that.

Even though he won the first set, you know even he will not remember his first win fondly if he wins the match.

If Wawrinka took it out in 3 sets it wouldn't be so tainted but now its going to 4 Stan has definitely got the label of a choker no matter how this turns out :/

I'm more wondering how it might have been if that MTO hadn't completely killed Stan's momentum.

Yeah Nadal is back.

Get your shit together Stan. This won't end pretty otherwise.

To be fair, it's not like he suddenly started choking for no reason.

How so? That's stupid. I don't watch much tennis, admittedly, but that sounds absurd to me.

Chokers lose. Like the Maple Leafs.

Yeah, we can dispense with this asterix nonsense. Tennis is a sport. Injuries happen. Wawrinka, should he win, absolutely earned this and no-one should question what might have been.

Wawrinka should have broke him. All he has to do is keep snapping at his heels. He can't mentally go away and give up a stupid service game. It's a strange match, but it's a great test of his resolve. Does he want this first slam or not? He's got an injured opponent out there, but he knows Nadal is tenacious, he just has to keep pressuring him on his service games.

I'm impressed you didn't go for the Canucks joke there.

I still think he'll win. He has to get his focus back eventually.

one good thing about this match: nadal is not grunting at all. totally silent.

haha I totally forgot about this. You're right.

Also, he's barely doing his 'hands, shoulder knees and toes, knees and toes' routine, is serving very fast, and is hitting lots of shots flat. Very un-Nadal like.
