Toma, are you planning on trying out Ultimate Space Commando? I can barely tell what is going on from the Desura gameplay videos, but it looks like it would be fun X-Com-like tactical game if I could figure it out.

So, like what Hexcells did for Minesweeper (don't know if you've played HC)?

Because I have to say, Hexcells is a likeable puzzle game but nothing I feel the urge to play on a regular basis (or for any meaningful amount of time, if I'm being honest right now) like for example, Picross.

That's a fair comparison. Much like the way that Hex is a modification of Minesweeper, Sokobond is a mod of Sokoban.
 
So I played through the first level of an upcoming game today, and I think it's got a great head on its shoulders. I don't want to give any of the comedy away, so I'll just go ahead and say that it's very funny, in a cheesy kind of way. The side missions are the real stars of the show so far. I could have just ran through the level in like 5 minutes, but there are so many little things to see and do that you'll spend more time with those than the "actual" game.

I'll post a bit more about it once I get farther. But so far, so good.
 
No clue, cant play it for 2 months now. Played it for 2-3 weeks, then I couldnt log in anymore.
I'm in the Frozen Endzone beta but I didn't have that problem. I even challenged you to a match. I would shoot the devs an email or post up on their forums.

Sure, what do you want to know? If you only want a short recommendation: The game deserves every purchase it can get just for its unique premise and (well done) execution alone. Its one of the most interesting game concepts released last year.

I think he meant that we are damaging the Indie Games "industry branch" by advocating that we like them, which is even more laughable.

I always pop into those threads to see what people are saying, but reading two or three posts is usually sufficient to make me go

I went a few levels deeper into the aforementioned game that's soon to release last night, and I can say that I'm glad for the direction it takes. Some levels are a bit more linear, while others are more sandboxy, and the settings are pretty diverse even now. The common element is that A) there's always a ton of things to interact with or tasks to do, and B) the game's bizarre sense of humor threads its way through every element. I find myself clicking on literally everything as I walk around in fear of missing some weird joke, reference or minigame. That's right, there are full blown minigames to participate in, and not in the cheesy Wii shovelware kind of way. Just wait until you get to the one stage earlyish in the game and you'll see what I mean.

The story is something I don't want to discuss in any detail, but I will say that it appears that it will be a pretty good one that is going down the proper path of its inspirations.

There are a few times I found myself wishing there was a run button in some of the larger levels, but it's not a game breaker. Exploring is all well and good, and it's part of the game's charm, but there are occasionally areas that are just expansive for the sake of being expansive and the constant wandering can feel a little tiresome.

Overall I'm pretty pleased with how the final product is playing. I'm having a great time and there have been several moments where I couldn't help but laugh out loud. It's rare for a game to be this funny to me, and I hope you guys find it funny too when it releases in a couple of days.

That sounds reeeeally good, and you just reminded me with that "clicking on everything", that I need to get around to finishing The Sea Will claim everything.

No, I'll have to look into it. There are just so many games out there, it's hard to keep track of all of them AND play them at the same time haha

I think it's pretty nice to see actual discussion going on in the other Indie thread, and not just devolving into "indies suck" (for the most part, anyway)
 
I think I'm going to spend nearly $40 on some games I've been itching to play today. Sales keep coming and going on games I'm not quite as interested in and I think it's time for me to spend some money on the games I *do* really want to play. Here's what I'm thinking about:

Sokobond
Factorio
NEO Scavenger
Dustforce Vita (double dip so I'm debating but I think it'd be nice to have this on mobile)

I might have missed this before you purchased - but pop over to the Playstation Network thread - apparently Dustforce on Vita has some slowdown :(
 
Sooo, Shütshimi has a free demo, so I am going to put it in the thread next month (and I need to get around to making a post for it), but here are some impressions because someone was asking for my impressions on it.

I wanted to make a video, but my capturing lagged again some text impressions need to be enough :p

Anyway,its a mostly randomized sidescrolling shmup with a twist. Randomized shmups rarely work because they can create unfair patterns or arent challenging enough to provide any sort of interesting experience. Shütshimi however, takes the WarioWare minilevel approach, and gives you a few seconds of enemy shooting, after that a few seconds break in which you need to decide on one of 3 upgrades, and repeat.

I was a bit surprised at first seeing how the game plays out, but it actually works surprisingly well, especially combined with the wacky item descriptions (if you manage to read them in 10 seconds) and the extremely weird item combinations, like a ridiculous 3 arm -fish that shoots 3 cannonballs. Its a bit weird how your performance has no direct impact on your progress, meaning usually you get upgrades if you are playing well and you lose them if you dont. In Shütshimi however, you simply need to get through a short level, choose another powerup, and start the next short level. The only reason why you want to shoot enemies is to get points, which count to nothing else other than your highscore. Thats fine though actually, because it means you can just replay the game to actually get through it, and then decide to either play for the achievements or the highscore. There also seems to be enough variety with different gun setups, enemy patterns, boss enemies and mean trap upgrades, that despite being rather simple, it doesnt really get boring either. Its not a very refined game in the typical sense as the levels arent carefully crafted to create an "experience", but its wacky fun.

Definitely a fun game, which I didnt expect, especially because it doesnt necessarily cater to the typical "shmup" gamer, which might also be their most difficult hurdle to overcome. People that typically dont play shmups could really like this, but how to tell them to try it is probably hard.

Oh and yeah, the soundtrack is quite good too.

No doubts it will land on my voting list next month, and especially for only $1 its really not that hard to recommend.

I have been hoping it would get through for awhile now, really happy about it. I will definitely be picking it up once it gets released on Steam. Hopefully they do a combo deal for the base game + expansion.
 
Haven't seen anyone talking about Hero Siege, probably for good reason too. Initially I bought the game when it was part of the Debut 8 bundle last year, put an hour or so into it, "beat" it (on normal) and then didn't return. For a game based around the rogue-lite idea, it was far too easy (or far too difficult, never in-between, which is awful), the levels stayed the same each time you played which was a big no-no...

Came back to it when they announced that it had finally been green-lit and holy shit... It's still the worst example ever of a game trying to piggy back off of the success of The Binding of Isaac.

The class balancing is still awful (good luck getting through the game with anything other than a ranged class). The levels still have very little randomisation in them. The power-ups still fall into two classes: powerful or irrelevant. The sound is still awful, even though they have attempted to spruce up the sfx and bgms somewhat. Probably the most annoying thing though is the screen resolution. I get it guys, it would take time and money to create assets for a higher resolution, but 960 x 640 being the highest resolution? Really?

In short: I like it, but I wouldnt vouch for its long term variety yet.

Longer impressions: Seems like a very competent dungeon crawler that is fun and rewarding right from the start. However, I am unsure how the variety keeps up in the game since the dungeons are all randomly generated and therefore might allow for less variety as for example Paper Sorcerer or Legends of Grimrock. There are also only 4 character classes available at the start, but I have no clue whether you might be able to unlock more with buildings later. Other than the possible variety, you have plenty to work for with the different buildings you can buy and use and the map seems vast enough to still have enough hidden secrets.

Anyway, in the end, it was definitely fun. I cant tell how much fun it might be in the long run, but I was considering doing another 1-2 videos continuing my playthrough of Heroes of a Broken land, at least until the end of the demo (because I cant justify paying $15 for it now if I havent finished Paper Sorcerer yet). Might continue playing soon and post some more gameplay of it to see how my demo playthrough continues.

Think I'll pass on that one. Like you said, Grimrock and Paper Sorcerer seem to be better and, overall, more polished options (not even mentioning non-indie alternatives).

So, I'm currently making my way through Spuds Quest. I actually started writing sort of 'review impressions' like I've done before, but then stopped since I have a good chunk of the game still before me. For now I'll say: What a two-faced game. Parts of it have been amazing, others make my blood boil (but not in a good way). The strong aspects are a testament to the dev's talent, though. The Escapists, his new game, will prove that further, I'm sure.
 
Started playing Murder in Hotel Lisbon.

Very cool game with a interesting aesthetic- the music is incredible. Definitely worth a gander if you haven't checked it out.
 
Just finished that game that's coming out this week and I'm shocked to report that it was really, really short. I only had one level left after my last post. Maybe two hours or a little more of game here for a first play through. It was a great two hours, but holy cow was it short. There's a lot of stuff I didn't get to actually accomplish according to the credits, so there are reasons to maybe go back, but as it stands, it's something to consider.

From what I am told, missions are completed in minutes flat. To get the most out of the game you need to pretty much ignore what you're supposed to be doing at any given time. So i've heard. I haven't gotten a copy yet and will most likely have to pick it up on launch.

Believe me, I explored everything I could. I know there was some stuff I had to have missed, but I didn't just go from point A to point B. I took my time and clicked EVERYTHING. If there was a secondary task, you know I was doing it. Even with that, it's short.

Wow. Though length is not everything, hopefully the quality of the humor was enough.

Length doesn't matter to me, but if it felt really short does that mean you weren't satisfied that it didn't feel natural when it ended or you just wanted more?

Yeah, in comparison, the random dungeons arent too favorable for Heroes of a Broken Land, but I really got to admit that I AM curious whether the world is offering more beyond just the initial "collect fragments" thing, and the buildings thing seems interesting as well.

I'll likely at least play the demo until level 6 and explore a bit more to see how the other buildings affect the game, but I also got the hunch that, even though its randomized, I cant see many people replaying the game over and over again because you still have the same characters and would more or less have the exact same progress.

Still, I might stream some more to see how it continues, because the "find loot" and improve characters hook definitely worked.
