inFAMOUS: Second Son engine will be presented at GDC

Guys, I'm sorry, because I'm about to ask something really, really dumb. But the PS4 is my first Sony console, so bear with me.

Is there any possibility for Infamous SS to contain any sort of MP/Coop?

Nothing has been announced. So its still up in the air but not likely as no infamous game has had multiplayer before

Not dumb, there are many that believe there will be some sort of MP/Coop. Nothing has been officially stated though.

For an open-world/sandbox game?
Yeah, sure....

I love how everyone posts this gif to show off the game's particles. They look nice, but the way more impressive part of this gif is lighting and reflections, not particles.

Infamous 2 had a scenario creator that u could publish online

Was pretty cool

What should be really interesting is how and to what extent they are exploiting the compute units for GPGPU functionality. KZ: SF for all its visual glory apparently barely utilized it. Compute exploitation is going to be akin to working the SPUs (iirc) in PS3. Given both consoles now have them, it will be interesting to see the evolution of its usage.

From what l've seen of the game so far it looks like it will be a showcase for PS4 in 2014.

Loved InFamous and InFamous2 but never got around to playing the Festival of Blood DLC. Should I try to work that in before Second Son releases or, for those who have played all the games, do you think I can pick it up anytime after Second Son?

I have not played it but I dont think its long so you can most likely finish its pretty quickly.

Lol at the X1 fans in here slinging around the baked lighting thing...

Really?

I mean, it was a legitimate discussion about the semantics of 'baked', not even the game. And if it was about a game it was about inFamous 2, not Second Son. AAANNDD even then he still agreed it was impressive, regardless of what was baked.

So, no, there's no agenda's here.

Well yeah, the fact that particles are emitting light is what makes them impressive in the first place.

I'm bald :( Am I generic?

Sorry dude... If only your developers had invested a bit more time in hair shaders you'd have more of a character.

I probably meant to say skinhead, or clean shaven head - if anything a balding character would be a welcome departure from the Ryan Reynolds lookalikes we get as protagonists at the moment

It's completely standalone so can be played at any time really, though do a run through at Halloween if you want to get into the spirit of the thing. It's a nice piece of DLC and has a new traversal mechanic which is pretty cool.

No please no. Sucker Punch please stick to your guns on this and don't try to change anything!

I find it bizarre how so many people have issues with beanies lol

It's not just the beanie for me. There's nothing intrinsically wrong with beanies. It's just the way it all works together with this character that I find really off putting. I just really don't know what they were going for when they designed this guy but it doesn't work for me at all. Beanies can look really good on some people but just not like this.

They didn't "design" him, he's Troy Baker with a beanie.

I won't be getting a PS4 for a while; December 2014 at the earliest, which is optimistic, and more likely, mid 2015. But, good god, Infamous : Second Son will make me quietly rage with jealousy until then. Absolutely battered the two Infamous games and the DLC on my PS3. Soaked up all the content I could and made sure I got the platinum on both games. This is someone who cares not a jot for trophies as well, but any excuse to prolong my stay in that universe and I'd gladly take it. The second game was arguably my game of the generation. It never outstayed its welcome or padded out its length with filler content. It took exactly the right amount of time to beat and it made me feel like a powerful superhero.

The new game looks stunning, and I really hope that this time around, it gets the attention it deserves, because as a franchise, I get the impression its a tad under appreciated. Hope they nail the third game. It'll give me something to look forward to for when I finally pick up a PS4. Good luck Sucker Punch, rooting for you guys to deliver on all that potential. Game looks jaw dropping.

Engine Postmortem of inFAMOUS: Second Son
Have you ever wanted to make an urban open world super hero game? Push boundaries on emotive cutscenes? Render awesome particle effects? Or maybe you just want to make your game really cool on the PS4? In this talk, we'll describe how Sucker Punch designed the inFAMOUS Second Son engine to take advantage of the power of the PS4. We'll cover our threading approach, its pros and cons, how we made content easier to tweak and create, and how we utilized compute and the PS4's GPU to achieve new levels of visual fidelity.

Sucker Punch's Performance Capture for inFAMOUS: Second Son
This talk will present the techniques and technology behind Sucker Punch's impressive facial animation as seen in inFAMOUS: Second Son. Learn how we set out to capture the subtle, nuanced performances and emotions of our actors, while taking advantage of the newest hardware to meet the high expectations of next-generation content. Learn how we were able to retarget and carry these performances over to our game characters for real-time playback in engine. We will discuss the technical details and decisions that were made to meet these demands at a reasonable cost. We will also open up our facial performance pipeline to offer details into the capture process, facial rig setup and workflows that were key to our success.

The inFAMOUS: Second Son Particle System Architecture
Particle effects play a central role in Infamous: Second Son, with superpowers including "smoke" and "neon." Particle systems are authored in a powerful, text-based expression language which provides great flexibility for effect artists to create complex behavior. This language is compiled into PSSL and run on the asynchronous compute queues of the PlayStation 4 GPU. This talk will describe the particle system runtime and authoring environment, with numerous examples of how simple features can be combined to create interesting effects. We will also describe our solutions to various challenges that arose when trying to run efficiently on the highly-parallel GPU.

The Visual Effects of inFAMOUS: Second Son
This session will cover the processes behind the visual effects development of inFAMOUS: Second Son, from breakdowns of specific effects to discussions of our tools and workflow. We will discuss the challenges of creating a diverse set of visual elements, such as smoke and neon super powers. We'll share how we used concept art during production to meet the challenge of defining a visual language for the effects. A new generation of engine and tools were created during the course of development - we'll take a look at how this gave us increased lighting accuracy, an expression-based particle editor and real-time curl noise that allowed us to create a unique suite of visual effects. We'll conclude with a few hard lessons that we learned along the way about the changes to our workflow.

Pretty cool. Should be interesting at least. I enjoyed Guerrilla Games one.

Four presentations? Nice. Really looking forward to these. Sounds like they went all in on GPU compute.
