Yeh fuck Australia.

While we're on this sort of subject, most organisers of Olympics/World Cups would prefer for Australia and East Asian countries not to host those events. Simply because the TV money comes from Western Europe and North America, and those timezones aren't conductive for good live TV audiences.

One of my friends is a reporter in Sochi right now, he says his room and hotel are fine apart from some comedy English (apparently there's a restaurant just called 'Restaurunt').

I should think it's a mix of the two, the athletes' rooms are obviously going to be first priority and a majority of the other rooms are probably all finished and fine, but that doesn't mean others won't be in varying states of disrepair or that people posting the pictures are lying or showing 'anti-Russia' bias. The crappy stuff is obviously what's going to get put online and will thus make it seem as though everything's like that when in reality it's probably a minority. That's not to excuse that such an insanely expensive event should have failed to complete its preparations on any level, just that it's kind of ridiculous to assume either everything's broken or nothing is.

The sheer ignorance and hatred in this thread is fucking astounding jesus fuck

Any chance you could elaborate on what exactly in this thread is hateful and ignorant? I'm expecting quite a large number of examples to match what you just said. And not just one dude thinking 'COK' is funny.

I've heard from Russians who are very much anti-Putin, anti-government who don't like the angle some coverage has of Russia as endlessly failing at everything, coming apart at the seams, when this is simply a case of some hotels not being ready. Some of them run by non-Russians. And not for the important athletes, but for media.

Meaning they're all about criticizing many aspects of Russia but some of this stuff has taken on a coarse 'lol russia you so backwards' comedy that's now bordering on silly - people making a moan about 'toilet paper in the bin' signs that are commonplace in many countries for logical reasons, endlessly retweeting the same photos of minor inconveniences.

By all accounts the people who work with accommodation for olympians, who work at venues and prepping slopes and arenas have done their job and the conditions are great - just because Putin sucks doesn't mean we should create every opportunity to shit on Russians in general and gloss over the good.

Not hateful but at some point a bit too much.

Good post. Thank you :)

In fairness, if millions of dollars have been spent on getting these buildings ready for the olympics then there's pretty much no reason for the whole toilet paper in the bin thing. We've had tech to deal with tiny / no pipes for about 50 years now.

The logical reasons usually being "the plumbing just can't handle it." Russia had fifty one billion dollars to spend on Sochi's facilities. Surely more modern plumbing should have been on the to-do list.

So, besides synchronized shitting, what other new Olympic events do we have at Sochi? I hear these have been confirmed:

50 Million Kickback Hurdles

Inflated Figure Skating

Ethanol Fuel Based Speed Assembly (with Power Tools)

It really is a poor excuse when you think about how much money has been spent. My cousins in Mexico have been living in a building for about 15 years and their toilets can take toilet paper no problem. This is all about corruption really. I am sure they paid for good plumbing...

The 2.5-km loop at the Winter Olympic biathlon venue was changed slightly on Friday after the Norwegian team found it was too short.

"We added 40 metres per loop," the sport's technical delegate at the Sochi Games, Max Cobb, explained. "We had an issue with the length but we made a change, which takes care of it. We're all set.

Interesting.

.

I haven't followed this thread much but you seem to give the only example that is really excusable (the toilet paper one), while you call minor inconveniences that toxic water in the toilet, the double toilets, the clustered squat toilets, those weird stairs turning just before the door or someone spraying dead grass with green paint. How do you honestly expect people not to go 'lol russia you so backwards', all that stuff is ridiculous and hilarious.

will learn eventually
So: Guy posts fake tweet about Sochi, including a picture from Vienna. Hours later he gets asked by CNN if they can use the picture for their article, not even once asking him if it's even a real picture of Sochi....

His picture has been retweetet over 350 times and was posted by USA Today... He even clarified later that is was a fake, but too late at that point....

Holy fuck you guys need to take a step back.

A lot of these things are really bad, yes, like the hotels not being ready, the water, stuff like that.

But come on, "X in ass." and "Cok juice"? The first is a translation problem. Get over it.
The second isn't even an error. That's a correct translation of the word, juice in russian is written Cok.

They don't test these things over and over x30? Make sure it works 1,000% before going live.
Considering they can't even provide shelter and clean water for guests in the country I can't say I'm surprised they messed up the opening ceremony as well.

No we don't.

What's really bad is Russia's attitude towards the LGBT people. But this hotel stuff is hilarious and shows how unfit the country is in hosting the Olympics.

And what's wrong with joking about ass OR Cok juice? Especially when it's the correct translation? Do people slurp on Cok in Restaurant in Russia?

Shit happens even if you test it a million times.

Is it really that widespread? or are we just blowing things out of proportion?

As a Canadian, I also feel the need to point out that Vancouver also had a mechanical mishap during the ceremonies where one giant ice crystal thing failed to rise out of the ground. These things just happen.

That's fine for things like a ceremony not going as planned. But shelter, clean water and the expectation you will have some privacy in the bathroom? Screwing those things up doesn't "just happen" lol.

I think everyone understands that those are babel fish errors, but come on, seeing 'Ice cream in the ass' on a menu is pretty damn funny.
