[The Game Business] “Reviving Sega will be the greatest achievement in my career” - Sega President Shuji Utsumi

"1. Sega's Japan studios now think globally"

Well, what a revelation! It only took them three decades to remember there's a world beyond Japan. Just like in the good old Mega Drive days, when, surprise, that global mindset actually worked in their favor. Bravo, geniuses, truly groundbreaking stuff!

Just fire the entire Sonic Team.
I would have agreed years ago...

Nonetheless, Magic Utsumi had a very practical thought on Sega.

"Our best teams (Sega AMs) are only developing games on a declining market (arcade)".

Now, arcade teams are helping RGG Studios, Sonic Teams to produce far better games:

- Shadow Generations is the best Sonic 3D game ever produced.
- Sonic Crossworlds is according almost all previews an amazing kart racer.

Utsumi's method paid off. The new Sonic Team is doing a good job now.

There were a lot of dumbasses at Sega but Magic Utsumi came back at the top of Sega Studios after 2 decades.
He is not responsible for their past stupidity 😜.
But he is the reason why they are great now.

They need big $70 games that sell over 10 million in a year. They need the sort of games that rake in hundreds of millions of dollars to invest into new triple-A games.

Sonic can do that, it really can, but not with Sonic Team. That studio has failed too much. He needs to have the guts to go after these Sega tentpoles that are failing them.

Shadow Gen was just a test from the new Sonic Team... 😜

35th anniversary game will be awesome. It's written 😘

I'm the one constantly advocating for powerful hardware at launch. I'd gladly pay 700-800 for a true next gen Sega home console.
Hypothetically (after all, they have a product to launch that may or may not be hardware)

Sega doesn't release expensive or outdated hardware, they use clever solutions, perhaps the games run through the media and there is an expansion port. This way they can offer price x performance.

They will try to arrive a year before the ps6, that's what I would do.

Will be?

Feels to me like they're in a better place than they've been for a long while, getting Atlus on-board was one of the smartest decisions they could have made.

Yeah, he also deserves credit because he was the one at Sega who decided to bring back Shuji Utsumi...
Haruki Satomi made a lot of the moves that have now put SEGA back on track, including looking to spend big on console projects that started with the reboot of Sakura Wars, instead of the old Sammy way of looking to mobile
To his credit, he really turned SEGA around.

cant kill what was never alive

it was the ghost of a console that visited us all in a dream

I think my enjoyment may have been dampened if I'd known at the time what a dire state Sega were financially back then and that Dreamcast's future was always hanging by a thread.

I really just ran with the hype back then and took the successful launch to mean that Sega of the MegaDrive days was back.

The Jan 2001 announcement was a punch to the stomach, despite months of online rumours.

Yeah I heard that last year but where are all these games?
the censored bat tits on sonic x shadow generation seems inline with his first point… back then we're japan first, now we're changing the system for the global audience

I don't know how you're gonna do it, but bring me Panzer Dragoon Saga remastered pleeeeeaaaase...
The creator said the source code was lost, so it can't happen.

"According to multiple sources, Sega lost Saga's source code amid the massive restructuring that followed Team Andromeda's demise, which means that the company can't "remaster" the game. Instead, it would have to recreate it from scratch, as Square Enix is doing with Saga's old rival, Final Fantasy VII. Although Saga is a staple of lists about the best games that people never played, rebuilding a title that didn't sell well the first time would be a dubious investment for Sega."

Missing masterpiece

Urban legends.

The creator knows where is the source code 😘

This thread has the most impatient posters. People want Sega to not only release their recently revealed games too early, but also go all out within a couple years time just to end up back in the hole again.

Their strategy now is better. Slowly drip feed the content and use successful existing I.P. to fund their slowly expanding portfolio. Skies of Arcadia sequel can happen next decade if they succeed.

dreamcast was so good, but its release window was so weird.
like a stop-gap machine before the bigger guys did their thing (ps2/gamecube).

really hope ms and sega somehow team up for the nextbox, with sega co-designing the hardware.
sega is retarded enough to keep the tradition of xbox mismanagement alive, but theyre also capable and would probably do some cool stuff.

No way should Sega team up with that rotting American parasite

He just said he heard rumors that someone knows where the code is. He does not know where the code is.
He left before the game was done. He has no idea. It's gone.
Lol you don't get it. He just implied the code isn't lost but cannot give more dirty details... (he asked the public to remain silent)

He half admitted he got the code because his company Groundings has good relationships with Sega and what happened in the past is the past.

PS: He probably took the source code when he left Sega. 😜

Ok.....then why doesn't he or whoever just do something with it? Is anyone doing anything with it or just left as a rumor forever...?

To me only the Sonic team and RGG are Sega. The rest is not Sega and doesn't interest me at all.

I also hope RGG will stop being the RGG studio and go back to the Amusement Vision era. They're working on a new Virtua Fighter that's already incredible, one of the best announcement these last few years.

It takes time: Utsumi came back at Sega but took control of Sega Asia Studios circa 2021/2022but not at his current powerful position.

In 3 years, he launched over 10 revivals projects like Virtua Fighter, Crazy Taxi, Golden Axe, Shinobi, Jet Set Radio, Monkey ball, Streets of Rage, Sonic Racing, Samba de Amigo, Let's make a pro soccer team, Alien Isolation and more are coming.

It's moving (even Skies of Arcadia has been patented lately), so be patient.

Jet Set Radio came back after 25 years...

The timing is perfect, wait for the Xbox crisis to reach its peak and then suddenly announce that they will return. I hope there is still boldness at SEGA.
The most one could ever dream to expect is for them to cut a deal with Lenovo (since Xbox has chosen Asus) and make a Dreamcast-branded Lenovo portable.

sega doing nothing vs sega doing something

They also produced Monkey Ball Rumble...

Division 3 and Sapporo Studio are also full of Sega veterans. (like members of the Team Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, World Serie Baseball, OG Phantasy Stars...)

I hope so. I still have the game (which I picked up at Toys R Us when it came out). It is a great game which holds up for the most part but the graphics don't hold up as well in this era. The dragon mechanics and music was amazing. it could benefit from a thorough remaster rather than a remake. Just don't replace the music and keep the gameplay mostly intact.

I want something like this so bad. I don't need/want Sega to re-enter the hardware market, just release something like a Dreamcast mini.

''This is the most I've been excited by a AAA Nintendo game in a long time. I think this looks brilliant. Replayed Donkey Kong Country Returns in anticipation for this (brilliant game, Retro's DKC games are incredible)''.

That's why it's necessary to create a cycle of positivity.
When the Dreamcast was released, there was negativity. They said that buying a Sega system was a risky investment because "Sega discontinues its consoles very quickly," so no one bought one, and the prophecy came true. I don't intend to organize the Sega fans present at Gaf, but we need to be vigilant, because if a Sega console is announced, Sega will become a target to be tarnished. Nintendo fans and the entire Sonyboy media will go into revolution.

Three steps are necessary:

1- Disqualify their opinion.

2- Insist that there is an almost magical quality to Sega.

3- Unite in our bubble and counterattack with more force than the Game Gear commercials. These guys will discover through us how Sega did console wars in the 90s.

If these three steps are not followed, any DC2 won't last 2 years.

Reviving Sega is an impossible task. But that all of the other companies crash and burn under the weight of their own incompetence to the point that they end lower than Sega is more and more plausible after each news that pops.

Shuji Utsumi to bloomberg

''I was impressed with how Nintendo released their hardware and I hope the trend continues''

basically he repeated the content of the previous interview and about switch 1 he said ''switch 1 really impressed me''

I love Shuji Utsumi's humility in recognizing Nintendo as a big player, humility is the greatest learning tool in my opinion.

Bring back Nagoshi to rescue Yakuza from becoming a meme series

Madness 🤪.

To celebrate his own ego legacy, Nagoshi would cancel...
The New Virtua Fighter
The New Streets of Rage
The New Golden Axe
The New Jet Set Radio
The New Shinobi
The New Crazy Taxi

... to produce mostly Yakuza, Judgment games.

He doesn't like video games, Daytona, F-Zero GX, the man thinks he is a movie director.
Fine! Find a deal with some Sony Game Studios, dude... 🤗

But don't manage any Sega Studio ever again, so many talents stuck in the Yakuza megalomania.

Sega Studios under Nagoshi VS under Utsumi, it's night and day. Really.

PS: Ok, to be less rude with Yakuza fans, i would say a Nagoshi return would be OK at one condition:

A small dedicated team for Nagoshi. Nothing more. Let the rest of the Division 1 (AM2+RGG Division) produce a load of other franchises...
