• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

Metroid Prime 4 Beyond |OT| We place our faith in you, Chosen One.

Well, I finally finished it. Here are some thoughts, in no particular order.

  • Puzzles are way too few and way too easy to the point where I didn't even bother getting items because there's no challenge to it.
  • To much combat vs. exploration.
  • Too many loading screens/elevators (and some very silly looking transitions, like the running)
  • Desert section, while not as bad as I thought it'd be, doesn't add much. Same with the bike. I'm a bit indifferent to both.
  • Green crystal fetch quest is really bad.
  • Story makes no sense to me and Sylux just comes off as an awful antagonist, if you can even call him that? He's barely in the game.
  • Powerups are mostly just the usual stuff with "psychic" put in front of each name..
  • Loads of wasted potential with abilities in general. We should be walking on walls, upside down etc. with stuff like the psychic boots. Antigravity powers could've been really fun etc. etc.
  • Opening doors is such a stupid use for the abilities.
  • Scanning is nowhere near as good as in past entries.
  • Where are the visors? Huuuuge missed potential there.
  • Levels are way too linear, more Zelda-esque than Metroid or Castlevania. Feels "cheap" compared to previous entries.
  • Music was pretty great.
  • Game looks amazing, can't wait to see Metroid Prime 5 built for Switch 2 specifically.
  • Runs really well, super smooth.
  • Lots of different control options that all work great. I've tried them all to some degree.
  • Very polished throughout, didn't encounter any issues anywhere.
  • NPC voice acting wasn't as bad as I thought it'd be, and not as prominent (thankfully).
  • Very poor enemy variety.
  • Being forced to heal the NPC's is an incredibly stupid addition and almost made me quit the game entirely.
  • The Auto-save is pretty terrible.
  • To me it feels like they've tackled the game like it's a shooter when it should be more of an action adventure game. E.g. the combat sections where you're getting swarmed by enemies feel super out of place to me.

Not even close to being up to snuff with past entries imo - but still better than something like Other M/Federation Force. If I squint my eyes and look beyond all of its issues I can see a foundation to build on going forward. But they have their work cut out for them to say the least.. This entry is Metroid 'Prime' in name only, it misses pretty much everything that makes the Prime series unique.

This lands somewhere in the 6/10 range for me. Definitely the biggest disappointment this year for me, and the worst AAA Nintendo game I've played in a looooooong time.

Playtime: 18 hours

TLDR Review:

Great "review". Haven't been able to play it yet, but from what I've seen it's sort of the Temu version of what it should have been. It's probably perfectly serviceable, but that's far from what most fans expected after the long dev time and in such a renowned series. It's almost like Donkey Kong Returns broke Retro.

its official, Prime 4 is worse than Other M

Unfortunate, and underserved imo. If anything it just shows that Other M is severely over rated.

Even though I'd rate this as 6 personally, Other M and Federation Force are like a 4 or 5.

Yeah, I feel like anyone who goes in without having played any of the past games will probably rate it higher than I did. But as a 'Metroid Prime' game specifically it's very disappointing.

In the fire zone. Dungeons and bosses have been fine. The rest..ehh. Combat could use a few more tricks. Samus is begging for a glory kill like system. The out of the way upgrades are hillariously bad. Not all but most of them are just..

I dread the late game grind. If its too infuriating I might just watch the ending on youtube.
There's only a late game grind if you wait until late game. Just start colllecting green crystals as you go and there will be zero at the end. The first upgrade you get for collecting is extremely helpful too, so I would do that as soon as possible.

Finished it. It was fun enough. I liked it because it had a cool atmosphere, great boss battles and enough good Metroid formula stuff.

Also lots of tedious/dull/corny/disjointed/plain stuff that the criticisms point out.

But the game was polished and the so-so stuff didn't overstay its welcome. It was pretty playable overall.

Definitely more like Wind Waker in the setup. Even has a big tall tower in the middle like WW. The 4-5 main 'islands' are on the outskirts. 'Mini-islands' dot the interior. The bike is your boat. Both put green stuff out to run into and collect. Both have enemies to attack while in your 'vehicle.' ...

Metroid Prime 4 is as good Metroid game as StarFox Adventures is a good StarFox game.

Liked them both, but this is not what I want from either IP.

After replaying MP4, you can see where it shines, unfortunately, it's not where Metroid games should excel.

I hope they give up with this kind of level design and find a way to truly evolve what the trilogy did.

Just finished it today, around 27 hours (I did so much exploring and green energy gathering), over all not a bad game but I really don't understand the point of its story why did it even have to exist, let's hope the next one is better when I play it in my late 50s.

Even though MP4 is very flawed it is also a very fun game to play. Sure the dialogue/marines suck (tip: turn off voice acting) but the actual feeling of playing the game is great, the levels look amazing and the bosses are really fun.

It is lacking in expiration and puzzles with both being too simple. The music is also absolute top tier.

It is nowhere near Prime 1. But it is more fun than Prime 2 to play - Prime 2 being a bit of a slog. It is also more fun to play than Prime 3 - with the cut up world and motion control details popping up all over the place.

So I would say it is the second most fun Metroid Prime after 1 but it as a total package I would put ut behind Prime 2 anyway. Ahead of Prime 3 for sure though, Prime 3 had many shitty scenarios and also WAY worse levels, art and music

Finished today. Enjoyed it more than MP2 and MP3. Don't get the furore.
Yeah I like it a lot.

The handholding was terrrible from the beginning but they eased up on it, and boss fights has generally been good and occasionally challenging.

Some areas were a shore though, but mostly because I returned too many times trying to get some forgotten pickup. And the bike wasn't a good idea.

The perspective is the only real issue for me, some boss fights were annoying because of camera and analog stick controls. Haven't tried mouse aiming. 2D Metroid is definitely my preference for this IP.

I'm close to the end. Going with a solid 8 here.

Just got it yesterday from GameStop after they offered a 20 dollar discount. Im generally not a huge Metroid fan and when I tried the original trilogy on the Wii I got motion sickness. Being in dark hard to see places and getting lost made things difficult for me and made me not want to play in those games. Is it anything like that? I will also say I enjoyed Dread and Fusion because they were more straight forward.

This is so straight forward that even John Travolta claims to play it.

I went back and played some Prime 1 remastered after finishing Prime 4.

Yeah .... Prime 1 captures the essence of Metroid so much better. Again, I don't think game series have to stay the same. I think Tears of the Kingdom is an incredible Zelda entry, one of the best easily. And it's so different from where it all started. But Prime 4, while a decent action/adventure game (sorta) is just too simple for Metroid. Again, it's not that it's too different. It's that it doesn't require any brain power or thinking whatsoever.

honestly the best video on the topic iv seen, watched a few days ago and the dude does an excellent job visually displaying the issue with Prime 4 compared to prior entries.
I couldn't even get that far after he completey misrepresents the series in like the first 15 minutes just so he can jerk off about Dread and bitch about Other M.

To be fair I really enjoyed Dread and Hated other M... im not sure why anyone wanting to play a metriod game would want a 3rd person shooter gallery over a classic entry that managed to actually overshadow fusions feeling of pressure from SA-X while giving surprisingly solid ingame cutscenes, great map designs and boss fights.

Why wouldn't people jerk dread off? It was a surprisingly great entry. I literally had zero expectations from the team making it when it was announced. Hell it took me like 3 years to even bother buying it, that was literally due to Other M burning me so hard prior, and me not trusting people saying Dread was good due to that.

I almost didn't buy this because of all the complaining. I picked it up over weekend and just finished the mines. I'm having a blast. This game isn't bad at all. The npcs are a little annoying but I didnt expect a good story. Bosses have been fun. Overall this has been a good game.

Which is fine, I'm the complete opposite but the issue here is his reasoning. He's claiming that all the 2D Metroids followed in its example when in fact Sakamoto has been making each game more and more linear and story oriented than the last. Other M for all intents and purpose is really just a remake of Fusion so criticizing it for doing the things Fusion did, and did worse, is disingenuous at best. Criticize it for the mistakes it does make sure but treating it like some crazy outlier is just silly when so much of it's DNA is the same as all the other post-Super entries. Dread is just as linear or even moreso than Other M or Prime 4 so heralding it as a classic example of the genre is pretty suspect if he's going to use that framing to criticize Prime 4.

He also conveniently skips over Metroid II since it doesn't really fit his argument.

Simply looking at this douchebag makes me angry. What makes his opinion so special? His bracelets and other gay accessories? 2002 called and wants all of that shit back.
Really? Guy is hot, his voice can sometimes be grating. He is not special, just voicing an opinion.

Finished it today. Ended at 99% item found. Annoying…

Final boss phase 1 was one of the worst boss fights I've experienced. Like what were they thinking? Absolutely awful. Zero fun.

Second phase til the end was great! And the ending was cool too.

First Prime I've finished. Not up to 2D Metroid standards but I still enjoyed it.

I'll settle with 8/10 on this one. Would drop it down to 7 a cranky day because of the boss phase mentioned above, but this is a good day so 8 it is.

I finished Ice Belt and Flare Pool but only because I forced myself through them. I uninstalled the game right after Flare Pool.

Ice Belt was genuinely bad. Endless scanning just to find keys to open a door. I thought, finally, it's over but no. You enter a second area and it's the exact same nonsense with a different layout.

Positives:
- Excellent music
- Excellent sound design
- Controls feel great, snappy and easy to understand
- Some of the lore was genuinely interesting
- The world itself was pretty

The mechanics feel painfully basic, like something designed for kindergarten-level play. I need more challenge to stay interested. I want a game that invites curiosity and makes me wonder what's around the next corner. In this game, you already know what's there and surprises are few and far between

Next up: Metroid Prime Remastered

I am almost done with the game. Finished
the mines
. I spent like an hour after riding around the desert grabbing crystals and a few power-ups I missed. Then hit up Volt Forge to explore and get all missing power ups, One still remains that I couldn't figure out. After that I returned to home base and I practically have enough crystals in that short time frame. About 71% items, 90% scans, 18 hours, Normal mode.

This is easily a 20 hour game if you take your time with it, don't use a guide, and play it like a Metroid game. I look forward to beating the game and immediately starting a replay on hard mode. This is the best game Nintendo has put out since Smash Bros. Ultimate

It easily stands shoulder to shoulder with Corruption, Echoes, & Prime Remastered. Speaking of Remastered, I beat it just prior to starting Prime 4. I had waited until Prime 4 was near to complete it. It is absolutely fresh in my mind, and because of that a lot of the complaints and comparisons I am reading just seem like utter rubbish.

The companions are just simply not there that much. The majority of the game is Samus alone. And when they are there, they add a nice element… most of the time. There are a handful of cheesy moments yes, but if you were to compare this Corruption it is not a big difference. And don't even get me started on Other M, even mentioning that game in the same breath as ANY of the 4 Prime games is an absolute joke.

The gameplay is absolute butter, thru and thru. Everything is just so smooth, works and plays so well. There are so many different uses of her abilities in this game. Its not like Prime 1 & 2 where only certain things are used for most the game and then you get a few toys at the end that changes things up. There is a very steady sense of progression where it feels like all of her abilities get time to shine.

And Vi-O-La… oh man what a bike dude. So fun to drive around in, the way it responds to terrain and how it handles. I want Retro to make a racing game. Its fucking dope. Screw the haters, this is an amazing game. I look forward to posting my full thoughts down the road. Maybe after playing hard mode. Cuz all I want to do is just keep playing the game.

I beat it just an hour ago with 100% items and scans. I've only beaten Prime 1 back on the Game Cube back in the day, never another Metroid game. I'm incredibly disappointed to say the least. The game is linear but dares to lie to you about it in the beginning. The backtracking is just annoying. The desert doesn't add anything to the game and the stages themselves are linear, sometimes literally like the forest stage. Enemy variety is a joke and the damage they dealt almost felt random at times. I swear I died a couple of times even though I still had multiple health containers left, just because I stood in the crossfire for a second too long. Bosses also took too long imo, the worst being the first stage of the final boss.

Visually it has a nice atmosphere, but them zooming in on pixelated textures every now and again was just embarrassing. Music is alright, but Prime 1 was more memorable. I don't know what it was, but I always confused the Psy button with the Morph Ball button, that's on me, though.

I hated the characters, the writing is just abysmal and Sylux just feels tacked on. Puzzles were very easy and them calling all the old upgrades Psy-upgrades has to be a joke, they don't act any different than the normal variants of said upgrades. Took me 14,5 hours to beat and I don't think I'll ever want to play it again, unlike Prime 1.

I need to check out the other games in the series, especially the 2D ones, because I like the style of Metroid. It's just sad to see that this is the best they could do after 8 years of making us wait. I give it a 4/10. Design decisions that were deemed outdated 15 years ago, forgettable story and horrendous characters, but at least it's pretty to look at.

This is almost every legacy sequel on a Nintendo system for the last decade.

Hear me out. Maybe Nintendo is trying to kill the Metroidvania genre by making Metroid… no longer a vania.

Just beat it and
UKJdYatddbXH41EO.png

The game is at it's best when you're just going through an area in the typical Metroid style. That's where it excels. The desert, the motorcycle and the writing/characters bring it down. And don't get me started on collecting that green crystal nonsense.

And to top it all off
the game ends on a cliffhanger where all federation soldiers give you parting gift of cringe as you teleport out of there.
So not the worst game but for something that carries Metroid in the title, it's hard not to be a disappointed by it.

I just finished it and the most I can give it is 5/10. Many aspects of it deserve no more than 4/10. I've finished 4 Metroid games before this one and rate them as follows:

Metroid Dread: 9.5/10
Metroid Prime 1: 9/10
Metroid Prime 2: 7/10 (I hated the dark world)
Metroid Prime 3: 7.5/10

I beat Dread in 2020 I think or maybe 2021 and the three Prime games I beat on the Wii over the last 2 or so years. So, my ratings are not based on nostalgia.

This game is a big drop off in quality from the previous big games in the series. The puzzles were mostly rubbish, simple and boring; a massive step down compared to the first 3 Primes. The dungeons were incredibly simplistic and dull in their designs compared to the first 3 prime games. The psychic powers were fairly bland and were under used. The open world was rubbish. There was nothing much interesting in the open world and nothing much interesting to explore. The shrines in the open world were very simplistic - these should have contained elaborate puzzles. At times it felt like playing a linear shooter like Halo but because Metroid Prime's gunplay is only passable at best this made it feel like I was playing a mediocre fps game. Poor enemy variety. Bosses were average - no where near the quality of Metroid Prime 3.

The second and third male characters were bland and boring and the engineer and the lady character were annoying, cartoonish and cheesy. The villain had hardly any characterisation though it improved in the last 3rd of the game. I liked the robot character - he was decent.

The graphics and music were good, the controls were excellent and the bike felt good to use.

Nintendo and Retro need to massively up their game for Metroid Prime 5.

The story makes little sense to me in general. I can only assume I missed big parts of it because I didn't bother to scan everything.

Like, there are federations stuff scattered everywhere, but not a single space pirate, Mochtroid, Space pirate ship(s)/gear etc. etc.? Do we ever find out why?

And don't even get me started on Sylux..

It's easily the worst story they ever created between cherrypicked things to teleport, no Metroids, copout Mind Control that loses it's agency after the warp, Sylux already had his suit in Hunters, "Green Phazon", stupid Aliens mixing Mountain Dew with Pop Rocks and low engagement of the plot being find the keys and collect enough crystal meth so you can plant a tree. A tree mind you that existed on the planet before the Lamorn even settled there...so in actuality you aren't really preserving anything of the Lamorn.

The scans are not very helpful as they are very bland in nature. They only vaguely describe the Lamorn's experiments with Green Phazon being what caused their own doom.

And the game ends on a cliffhanger with no followup scene like MP1-3 have done.

The more you analyze the story and it's lore the worse it gets. It's very bad.

Beat the game last night. Awesome
3 phase
boss fight. Very, very awesome. I think people just suck @ games, heard a lot of whiny complaints about that. Anyone who has beaten RE4 should have no issues with the beginning part.

Yeah I died like 5 or 6 times, but who cares. It was fun. The boss fights in this game are soooooo much better than what Nintendo typically & many other companies have put out over the past decade or so.

The ending
was sad, abrupt, and probably the only Metroid game to ever actually make me feel some emotions related to the story. Retro really kinda sets you up with this ragtag crew that @ first is a little bit annoying but they grow on you.

I found myself always returning to home base to check on them, deposit some crystals, look for missing upgrades, and then go on my way.

It definitely sets up a sequel and that's where I am more sad. The reception I have seen online generally is that of disappointment and I don't understand it. Some issues I get, but a LOT just feels like BS thrown at the game for no reason

Sometimes I wonder if the story of the game pissed some people off. It's the only one in the series that is relatable, it's simple yeah but the themes relate a lot to what has been going on over the past decade or so.

They literally called the true enemy of the game Green Energy. Took a little guts to craft a story around a civilization that thought Green Energy would reset the harm they had already done to the planet. Instead it turns them into bloodthirsty monsters and ends their whole race. Though, that was not the only reason, the Psychic Crystal they mined for and forced every being to have was the precursor.

Beyond that though it's really a story about friendship and hope. But the hope part is pretty sad. The Lamorn were left waiting & hoping for a Savior that never really came until after the fact. Whether this was by design or not we will hopefully see in the future.

But yeah, game was awesome. Going to start a Hard Replay now and probably go for 100%. Can't understand the hate, really feels more like just some silly agenda against a great game. Maybe some people are upset because it actually came out? Or that it looks and plays so damn good despite having the bones of a Switch 1 game.

Like the issues with level design, map, puzzles I mean just all that shit I just throw out the window cuz it just feels like nonsense.

I might have to do a true comparison with the other Prime titles if I decide to review this game. Later, after I beat Hard Mode.

Only Echoes had a true maze like design. And people bitched cuz it was too much for them. Whined like little babies and went to play their Halo 2.. Now, all of sudden everyone wants what is essentially Echoes, cuz you dumbasses couldn't handle the game when it originally came out?

Playing Prime Remastered back to back with this game has shown just how off people are sometimes. It kinda hilarious, except for the fact that it could affect my own chances of getting a sequel to this awesome new entry in the series.

And what bothers me even more is this game is like all 3 past games in the Trilogy, molded together to create something new.. It contains great parts of all the Trilogy, especially Echoes.

The amount of people who worked on this game is astounding. The credits were huge, it truly makes me think this game was developed in tandem with a sequel. Despite my love of the game, you really do feel like there was a lot more intended here and maybe (hopefully) it was pushed for the sequel because the Switch 1 hardware just was not enough to enable their vision.

Glad you liked it. Your opinion is no more valid than the people criticizing it, though. A lot of people are conflating the ragebaiting grifters on YouTube who are doing it for clicks and profit with the actual, genuine criticisms of Metroid fans.

I think this game is a steaming pile and frankly it's mind boggling to me that you're discounting the criticisms after playing, of all games, Prime remastered. It's night and day difference to me, but to each their own. We all prioritize different things in games I suppose.

Indeed each their own.

From my point of view the puzzles in Prime Remastered are no more challenging or involved than what is in Beyond. There were many, many times where I was legit surprised and experienced gleeful joy playing Beyond due to the way it incorporated the morph ball. Puzzles included. Each area kinda felt like it took a different approach to using the ball mode, and psychic abilities.

It was not on the level of some of the stuff in Echoes, but overall I really enjoyed how the morph ball was utilized in Beyond. Especially during boss fights. The camera work and transitions were beautifully done and it made for a very seamless action oriented transformation in the middle of hectic battles.

As for the map and level design. I just don't see it. I am going to do a deeper comparison down the road. But for now, Prime Remastered only has one area that I would really consider maze like and that is Phazon Mines.

Tallow Overworld was very simple and featured about 2 surprises, the crashed frigate and Temple area. Otherwise it pretty much was utilized like a hub, except Magmoor Caverns was like an underground hub. So in reality, you only had 3 somewhat sprawling areas. Chozo Ruins, Phendrana Drifts, and Phazon Mines.

Chozo Ruins, Magmoor Caverns, and Tallon Overworld all featured very similar enemy types. On top of this, Chozo was filled with narrow corridors, and was set up to be more like a big box than an actual maze. You just unlocked it a piece at a time mostly. So the backtracking created the illusion of that.

So then, you really just have 2 areas now, in supposedly the magnum opus of the series that provide the qualities so many are harping on Beyond about. Phendrana, & Phazon Mines. But wait, what happens in both of these levels? Oh there is a lot of going up and down. The majority of the enemies are all Space Pirates, and you are bombarded with them at times.

I loved PRIME 1. It is the reason I got into the METROID series. I adored remastered. But I am not blind, these issues I see a lot people complaining about are things I see have always been in the games. So it's kinda sus to be honest.

Anytime a game takes too long to come out, the expectations become insane. I've seen this happen so many times with other games, and I just never understood it.

Obviously I disagree, but even by your own admission, Prime 1 had 3 "somewhat sprawling" areas. Prime 4 had zero. I'll admit that the sprawling aspect is somewhat artificial and the game is mostly linear, however, it's still much more cleverly designed to mask that and make the exploration feel rewarding, atleast to many of us. The levels are just more intelligently designed. Even if you discount Tallon Overworld as simple and a hub, I'd argue it was a GOOD hub and served its purpose. There's really no comparison to the Desert. It's large just to make it feel expansive and there's practically nothing to actually do in it and it serves largely just as an excuse to ride the motorcycle. It would have been barely passable in a 20 year old game and I find it inexcusable now.

Not trying to come off aggressive and again I'm glad you liked it, just trying to give you some counter arguments.
