“Powerslave Exhumed” Officially Announced

To be fair to rage software, John Carmack was the problem we should have had 60 fps doom on the saturn, but apparently Carmack thought affinity texture warping was worse than 13 fps
Carmack was the problem? That's interesting, never thought he'd throw a spanner in the works of his own game.
It was a sad day when we demoed it on the big flat screen when I was working at Gamestation. The Manager quickly turned it off so it wouldn't detract from sales.
Worse still, all the staff were dreadful Playstation fanboys who couldn't wait to rubbish the Saturn at every opportunity lol
Edit. Just looked up the Saturn port debacle, and apparently John admitted he made a bad decision. Wish he'd figured that out in 97 lol

OMG im telling you right now it's not a real game and developer. It's Kojima again, just look at their logo? Obvious KojiPro reference with the scull in a helmet!

The fact Kojima doesn't acknowledge them on his twitter is all the evidence you need, he's in on it.

Not so subtle Kojima, we can see you

Did anyone else read the title of the thread and immediately hear the sound those little red spiders make when alerted?

Nightdive is doing God's work as usual but why does it look so washed out compared to the original?
I have faith in them doing this respectfully, we will see the final version. A developer implementing N64 three texel based bi-linear texture filtering (interesting SGI decision to optimise speed and maintain most of the quality/reduction in texture shimmering) For DOOM64 (which warranted me at least double dipping, might triple dip on XSX just because I like DOOM64 that much) will do this justice.

Coming to Steam too.

Nightdive surpassed themselves with the Doom 64 and Shadowman Remastered ports, this is going to be flawless.

Yeah, this looks like one of those cases where improving the problems of the original irons flat some of its old charm; the chunky framerate could make the sprite characters seem creepy, and the grainy texture display really gave the lighting effects stark contrast and dimensionality. It's a rare case where "better" isn't better because some of the technical deficiencies played into the highs of the original experience.

(*Another one with that "better better" feeling for me is PS2 Medal of Honor Frontline; when they "remastered" it for PS3, it felt like a normal game, not this incredible epic that was straining the console to its metal to try to render the chaos and expanse of that harrowing beach assault.)

In other parts of the trailer, Exhumed Remastered looks fine and like a lot of fun, so maybe you can get used to it or there's plusses and minuses to the conversion and that's just part of its own take on things. NightDive usually does trustworthy work, so I don't want to pass judgment, but looking at the trailer kind of made me still want to track down an old PlayStation copy or boot up a Saturn emulator and see this as it was in its prime.

Precisely. It looks like a poor HD version from an emulator.

The contrast is gone, the "detail" of the textures (even if by grainy image.... but hey, guess what, you can use your limitations at your advantage) is nowhere to be found, and most of all the new contrast settings destroy the light effects, which added so much character in the original:

I don't know why they are doing it like this. But really, not like this.

A couple of weeks ago I tried the game with RetroArch's BeetlePsx core and used the overclock feature. It played great with a silky smooth 60fps, the only thing dragging it down are the archaic controls.

You can somewhat fix the controls by binding the forward/back/strafe buttons to the left stick and the up/down/turn buttons to the right. Then bind the fire button to the right trigger.

It's not going to be analog but it should be much more playable. I do this with all retro FPS games in RetroArch. Some games work better than others. You might also want to tweak the sensitivity/deadzone options on a per-game basis as well.

Bringing back the nostalgia baby! I can't wait to play this game again. Nightdive always does a great job of updating the classics and cult classics. I'm still holding out hope that Nightdive somehow get the rights to NOLF someday.

If anyone want to try it in advance..

1.0.2 is an unofficial update, 1.0.1 was the latest version from Samuel Villareal, the Nightdive dev that created the KEX engine and all those old ports.

Unlike Doom EX vs Doom 64, it seems like he has improved a lot the Powerslave EX.

I'm not sure of this weird new campaign version that mixes both Saturn and PS editions as they state. I can't think of anything from PS I want on top of Saturn, level design was simply superior on the latter and I don't know if they'll be well informed enough to choose the right elements to ditch/keep in this way. If it's just PS campaign + Saturn bomb jump mechanics for example that'd be lame as even adding that it wouldn't do much for the level design on PS (and potentially break parts of it). Why not just let us choose which campaign version we want to play instead..?

Oh my good.
Still today... Sometimes i listen to the score which was very atmospheric! So cool. Never played the game!

Maybe i catch it on steam. Is ist playable on surface pro 2017?

The choice to not just go with the better Saturn version is baffling.

I did this for Outtrigger on Dreamcast. Go to the in-game options and put the controls to D1, which puts movement and strafing on the face buttons. Kinda baffling that this isn't the standard control method, instead they put it on the dpad, which makes the game borderline unplayable. D1 is the way to go. Then you go to the input options of your emulator and put the face buttons to the left stick and the left stick to the right stick and its done. This makes the game play incredibly well. Not perfect, but it works great. The only way to get better controls in Outtrigger is straight up using a mouse.

btw.. a rerelease of Outtrigger with online play would be nice. It's a very fun game and mechanically very solid.

Wow, someone talking about Outtrigger. I've tried to get into it before, but the maps are so tiny and the weapons are so weird (a sniper that shoots rockets?) I find it very hard to get into.

Yeah, the tiny maps are my biggest gripe with the game honestly, but I like the mechanics and the general feel of it. It's basically a third person arcade styled Quake 3. I mean you can play in first person but I wouldn't recommend it. The controls really need adjustment though. D1 plays fine for an old console shooter whose controller originally only had one analog stick, but changing the inputs to dual analog makes the game really shine and a whole lot more fun to control. Using a mouse is the ultimate method though.

Unfortunately, this version is unplayable with just a gamepad. You can move around and shoot but you can't use the menus/inventory without a mouse.

Well, the kex engine guy had already converted the ps version (maybe going for it out of ignorance, thinking both versions are basically on par like some do, with minor differences and in cases with more complex geometry on the PS - though often the added geometry is to cut your view to bigger spaces so not always a positive - or just the ease of access for himself) before he went on to work for nightdive so it makes sense they'd have that version for sure. But yeah, all this time later due to all the licencing hurdles they went through they could have had both if they had put the effort in.

That article has retrospectively ruined Exhumed for me. Disgusting lack of diversity. 🤡👹

Anyone know if the original developer Dolls are in?
Have I already asked this? My mind these days is like a pinball machine.

Man I hope this turns out good. I wonder how they've mixed the games? I'd rather have the ability to play both separately, even if they were their original forms. I really want to see that pure Saturn version.

What the fuck is that?!

Red spiders were the common enemies on Saturn and (jumping?) blue scorpions on PS. I guess it's neat we get both for variety but it's hardly a big deal and again, otherwise, I too would prefer to have separate campaign versions to play the one you enjoy/have nostalgia for the most instead of a remix. I'm really worried that for example if you have bomb jumping as on Saturn it can break PS levels or even have added uses for it without the nuanced design cues that would hint at what you need to do where in the Saturn version tuned for that capability and so on. It's not like it's a wholly different game that you get one longer campaign if you combine two in one, it's the same overall game and campaign with some big adjustments here and there in how you get larger areas/views on Saturn or some better geometry/effects on PS and the mentioned bomb jumping needed here and there on Saturn etc. We'll see I guess but I doubt any reviews will delve into that. But since they bother remixing it all why not (optionally) add more/more lethal enemies and/or tune ammo/health drops since we'll be playing with controls superior to the d-pad tank controls and L/R strafing.

Happy to be proven wrong but compared to the original this still looks so, so bad.

How ffs? It'll be more or less the same as Powerslave EX which was excellent.

Honestly, the hysterics on this board are so ott at times. Every game thread, no matter how good it is or how good it looks you'll always get at least one "WORST GAME EVAR!!!" post.

Only just seen this post. I'd stuck it on my rg351mp, it plays pretty damn good.

I guess I just don't really like the PSX version.
