A full-size replica of the famous Great Sphinx of Giza has appeared in a village in China.

Residents in Hebei Province gathered to take photos of the bizarre addition to their skyline, which is 20 metres high and over 60 metres long.

And according to the Daily Mail, the mysterious statue has been creating quite a stir. Residents have gathered to take photos of the bizarre addition, which stands 65 feet high and over 196 feet long.

So what exactly the sphinx doing in the middle of China? It's reportedly part of a movie set and camera crews and actors were seen filming at the fake statue on Saturday.

Yeah didn't they figure out it's much older than the pyramids?

I think so.

One crazy story about the Sphinx is that it used to be totally submerged beneath the sands and everyone forgot it was there.

The ancient Greek historian Herodotus makes no mention of the Sphinx at all in his writings and descriptions of the pyramids, because he didn't even know it was there.

There's just something incredibly eerie about picturing the "Father of History" observing the pyramids, and not even realizing that beneath his feet lays a monument that is more ancient to him than he is to us.

I like to think it was originally a lion and the Egyptians later carved it back to a human face.

That's a very popular theory and makes a lot of sense when you look at the dimensions of the Sphinx's head in profile (and how the head is disproportionately small compared to the body)

I like the idea that it also used to signify the actual age of Leo:

If the solution to the riddle is astronomical it may refer to the position of the sun on the horizon, or in the zodiac. The Zodiac of Denderah, oddly opening with the sign of Leo or Lion, registers the entry into a new cycle between 10,959 and 8,800 B.C.

"From the Book of the Dead we learn that the movement of the sun in the sky was guarded by two lion gods or 'Akeru' which stood at the morning and evening gates. The body of the Sphinx is that of a lion, which symbolizes the cycle of Leo. Its head is that of a man. In the zodiac there is only one male figure and that is in the sign of Aquarius. It is exactly on the opposite side of the zodiac from Leo. The message of the Sphinx reads: 'From the epoch of Leo to the future age of Aquarius'." - "The Home of the Gods" Andrew Tomas page 115.

Those residents are amazed at the statue now, but didn't saw it get built? WTH? It magically appeared?

It could be they were building it but no one had any idea what it was; probably guessed a new building or something. When they were done, they could've been like 'They built what?!'

I think the end of China will be caused by attempting to build an exact replica of the earth somewhere in their countryside

Kind of impressive and sad that the cost of building a replica is less than shooting on location, if it really is for a movie.

Do you think anyone is going to risk shooting in Egypt with the current sociopolitical climate being what it is? Besides, I doubt they would even let them. :P
