Japan's missing out on the best cartoon ever.

Also missing out on Spectacular Spider-Man.

Happy Tree Friends being so popular is baffling to me. It's well past the height of its popularity and it was never particularly big in the states.

The fact that RWBY is on that list at all is really sad.

RWBY isn't awful. The only thing that's holding it back is the mediocre voice acting and story execution. The lore, the animation and fight choreography is really really well made. Those factors are probably why its popular in Japan. And also why I like the show too.

I won't deny that they are slowly getting better with the VO since got well established VAs like Yuri and Vic and getting better voice direction. But it's still not all that good.

Wait, isn't Transformers originally a Japanese show? Isn't it technically anime?

Edit: oh I see, written and recorded in America but animated in Japan. I guess it passes on a technicality.

-Japan made robot toys unrelated to each other.
-Americans saw robot toys and decided to mash them all together and make a show about them. The Transformers. Americans sent the show off to Japan and Korea to be animated.
-America cancels the show, then Japan picks it up and keeps going for another 130 episodes that never make it to the US.
-Then US/Canada creates Beast Wars.
-Japan creates 78 episodes worth of Beast Wars spinoff that never make it to the US either.
-Then Beast Machines comes from US/Canada.
-Then comes four new series all from japan that actually get dubbed and broadcasted in the US between 2000 and 2006.
-'Transformers Animated' is created in the US and animated in Japan.
-'Transformers Prime' is created in the US and animated in US and Japan.

I don't blame you for being confused. Transformers is a US creation but it is intimately tied with Japan.

You're misinterpreting sphagnum's comment. Beast Wars had a horrendous Japanese dub that tried to make the show more comedic and just made it annoying.

Yes, yes it did. Oh god it was terrible. I watched some of that japanese dub to see what it was like and it was horrifying.

History of Transformers is pretty interesting and book worthy.

Seems odd South park is at #6 and adventure time is at #19, then.
It could be that the "right audience" was asked. Maybe AT isn't as popular as I assumed, I just see it a lot, but most of my friends don't even know what South Park is. The few who did said they didn't really "get it".

RWBY... gross.

Everything else makes sense to me. It was surprising to me that South Park is popular in Japan back when I first saw FLCL, and it still surprises me, in a good way.

How did they come up with that list of 50 works to choose from? It seems strange that classics such as the Simpsons and King of the Hill were not even in the running.

Or am I just reading this wrong, and that out of those 10k votes only 50 works were mentioned? If this is the case I will be quite surprised honestly.

I can't be certain but it seems they had a list of 50 works that were up for voting (thats the second list), which included The Simpsons.

I used to love Tom and Jerry as a kid, but then I got old enough to understand all the racist stuff. Maybe I'm just showing my age since I'm old enough to remember when they still aired the racist ones.

Most Japanese have no idea this show exists. I believe it was shown on a premium channel at one point, and I know the third season was never shown. Currently, Amazon jp is has it available to stream as part of their exclusive content, though I don't know if they ever plan to have the third season release.

For everybody hating on RWBY, note that the show is actually legit good now (for what its trying to be at least). To be honest though, are we surprised that a show as ostensibly inspired by anime as RWBY is popular with the Japanese?

List seems fine overall. Ultimate Spider-Man over Spectacular is a head scratcher but maybe Spectacular never made it over there - I dunno. Does Steven Universe have a Japanese dub yet?

Make no mistake, I didn't stop watching RWBY after the first few episodes. I've been following it out of trainwreck-like curiosity. For all the tiny improvements in the animation quality, virtually everything else has stayed the same or gotten worse. There's so many plotholes and nonsensical fuckery that goes on in the last 3 episodes of Volume 3 it's ridiculous.

I'm shocked that Peanuts aren't on the top 20. I thought Japan loved Snoopy & co. Hell, they have a store chain exclusive to Japan called Snoopy town!

Yeah Japan loves Snoopy, but I think the comics are way more popular than the cartoon in Japan. I've seen Peanuts comics in Japanese bookstores, but I've never seen the cartoons on TV except for in commercials.

Like South Park, the contrast with cute artstyle and over the top violence is universally amusing. Happy Tree Friends also is great as merchandise.
Shame at the lack of Avatar, no moe bending was a deal breaker for you Japan?
Looks like an awkward imitation of the barrage of Shonen shows they already have.

considering by number 20 it was only voted on 67 times, I cant possibly thing how they got 10,000 votes

Tom and Jerry has beautiful animation, but it's really just a formula cartoon. I wonder if the wartime caricatures have set back the localization of the classic Warner Bros. cartoons, the best of which were released in the 40s and early 50s.

Does anyone know if the early Fleischer sound cartoons made an impression over there? I can't imagine anyone ever translated the Bimbo and Koko cartoons, besides the French.

Looks like a good balanced list of old and new otherwise.

Apparently they have been having trouble just getting the show out there for whatever reason, I remember a few years ago on twitter somebody said how they were a fan and wanted to know if they were ever gonna get avatar in japan, and the creators responded how they have been trying for a long time now.

Huh, I didn't notice that the numbered ranks weren't actually in order in some cases.

As for the "10,000 Voters" thing, reading the article, that may just be a misinterpretation of the name of the poll that site runs.

I must be blind, could not find the simpsons on that list at all until now. Still though, it's criminal to not allow people to vote for King of the Hill.

Please excuse my outburst while I outburst about my favorite cartoons not being included on this list:

WHY AREN'T JOHNNY BRAVO OR DEXTER'S LABORATORY ON THIS LIST? THIS LIST IS SHIT!

I've always found the cult following of South Park in Japan to be fascinating. It's all American political and social issues. Even something like Gintama has an easier time making the regional jump compared to SP.

amazing world of gumball owns. I'm sad they don't like king of the hill.

No one outside of the US I have met knows what the King of the Hill is. It's quite possibly the most American centric show ever. People outside of the US just don't get it for the most part and it makes sense as many of the jokes, stories and so forth really require you have lived and immersed yourself in the American culture. Its like non Japanese having trouble getting a lot of jokes and such in Gintama.

Also I find people surprised by the lack of their favorite show a little embarrassing. Many shows probably never came out in Japan, let alone got a dub. This isn't even considering the cultural differences and so on and so forth. Some of you people really need to think outside of your own little bubbles.

Just because you love something doesn't mean a different culture separated by language, thousands of miles, etc. Would have seen some show you like, let alone enjoy it like you do. I could ask why Americans don't love eating bugs like many Asian countries do and sound just as oblivious and foolish.
