10,000 Japanese anime fans pick their favorite foreign cartoons

Pleased to see Tom & Jerry at the top. I used to watch the shit out of T&J after school like 20 years ago. Still one of the greatest cartoons ever, as long as they had Quimby at the helm.

No one outside of the US I have met knows what the King of the Hill is. It's quite possibly the most American centric show ever. People outside of the US just don't get it for the most part and it makes sense as many of the jokes, stories and so forth really require you have lived and immersed yourself in the American culture. Its like non Japanese having trouble getting a lot of jokes and such in Gintama.

In spite of all this, King of the Hill does have a Japanese dub.

Make no mistake, I didn't stop watching RWBY after the first few episodes. I've been following it out of trainwreck-like curiosity. For all the tiny improvements in the animation quality, virtually everything else has stayed the same or gotten worse. There's so many plotholes and nonsensical fuckery that goes on in the last 3 episodes of Volume 3 it's ridiculous.

Volume 3 was a pretty big step up from the previous volumes. I thought the final few episodes made total sense and introduced actual stakes to the series. I mean it's not like the show is now the best thing since sliced bread or anything but I feel like I can say I like and respect the show unironically now. To each their own I suppose.

Surprised The Simpsons wasn't in the top 20.

Simpsons is a tricky beast. There's a small hardcore gathering that really follows the dub's VA's other works. I think they don't dub it anymore, but they do show it subbed.

The general public knows it more from commercials for CC Lemon.

South Park at 6th.

I really want to know more about South Park's impact in Japan, but last time I looked, the series wikia had jack shit. Is there a more comprehensive article?

Wat? Hanna-Barbera created Tom & Jerry.

William Hanna and Joseph Barbera created Tom and Jerry. The shorts they did for the cinema are all time classics and super great.

Then they formed Hanna-Barbera and did ton of mediocre-to-good shows for TV, among them a revival of Tom and Jerry.

Strange is there an article as to why? I find it funny that a show that attracted western Anime fans that liked it because it was Anime adjacent can have the complete opposite reaction in Japan

They don't care for Western knock offs? I like Avatar by the way but I can see Japanese animation fans not even bothering with the wealth of home grown animation.

Do they still rerun Felix the Cat or are people still familiar with the animation? That one seems generationally out of place with the rest of the list.

Certainly didn't stop people there from watching RWBY.

By the look of things, Avatar's main problem in Japan was a crappy dub.

I have nothing to back this up, but I would think the main villains being blatantly based off of imperial Japan would also limit its appeal there

Japanese Bronies, where you at?

It amuses me South Park is that high. With as many years as it been on, I wonder if they think of it as our Naruto.

I'd imagine that the Japonies would lose interest considering it's been almost two years since the season 2 finale aired there and season 3 hasn't been dubbed yet. For some reason though the EqG movies were dubbed.

Also I find people surprised by the lack of their favorite show a little embarrassing. Many shows probably never came out in Japan, let alone got a dub. This isn't even considering the cultural differences and so on and so forth. Some of you people really need to think outside of your own little bubbles.

Just because you love something doesn't mean a different culture separated by language, thousands of miles, etc. Would have seen some show you like, let alone enjoy it like you do. I could ask why Americans don't love eating bugs like many Asian countries do and sound just as oblivious and foolish.
You say this as if many Americans do not love stuff not intended for them. Shit, if anything Anime is huge in American because we had to go out of our way to get it until finally Japan realized a lot of Americans loved Japanese animation and did not give a fuck if it was not intended for them, they just wanted it and probably more than anyone else. Same goes for games. So if anything I think ignorance was more on part of those in Japan. America is a lot more open to cultural difference that some will give it credit for.

Japan's missing out on the best cartoon ever.

Also missing out on Spectacular Spider-Man.

Most Japanese have no idea this show exists. I believe it was shown on a premium channel at one point, and I know the third season was never shown. Currently, Amazon jp is has it available to stream as part of their exclusive content, though I don't know if they ever plan to have the third season release.

Yea, Japan didn't like Avatar, like at all.

Wait isn't the Fire Nation Japan.

I'm guessing that's mostly a list of what American shows got heavily syndicated in Japan. If they're anime fans and not western animation fans they're probably not going to be super familiar with anything that isn't mainstream.

I'm not American and loved King of the Hill and Boondocks when I was kid. Both shows are very American and have some American politics/issues but they're still easy to watch and are hilarious. I also love Gintama but I see your point. A lot of people might not give it the few episodes it might take to get into the show (or Gintama's case like 20-30...), the dub could be utter shite, it could be put into a garbage timeslot, etc.

I am convinced that if Avatar was given a good dub and put into a decent time slot with other anime series, it would be popular in Japan.
