10-year-old girl kidnapped by man she met on Roblox,

Parents in this day and age need tech education.

They're oblivious to the potential dangers of online social media and games.

Be aware of what your kids do online.
These parents are not like our parents that could not put the timer on the VCR. Im 40.
Its amazing how these parents go online to find out about everything. they know about Dont hit your kids, the kids have mental health to monitor, what food is best for the kid, know about bullying....
but parents haven't heard of online predators??? haven't heard about parental control (which curb this madness) ???????
its crazy.

I agree there needs to be more awareness. I am not going to blame the victims for something this sicko did. I believe most parents feel like as long as their kid is home, they are safe. They do not realize how social media is manipulated by these people. Nobody thinks it is going to happen to them or their child.

As I indicated earlier in the thread, this is not how our family operates (I am way over protective and probably why my daughter recommends therapy to everyone ). However, I do believe there are parents in today's world that grew up on social media and games like Neo Pets where nothing went wrong and it gave them a false sense of security. After all, those are internet kids playing games and they don't live around here.

Dude is gonna have fun in prison

Why on earth do these platforms have chat functionality. Nothing rated for kids should have any sort of chat functionality at all. If it's actually rated 16 and just has a load of kids playing regardless it's a very good reason for the sort of verification systems China has for online gaming.

My kid is on Roblox, you just have to keep an eye on stuff, like everything else in life. Plenty of options for parental controls too, but it takes a bit of time setting it up.

I have zero worries of them being abducted, because we talk about online safety, and they arent stupid.

why not? kids can talk to their friends.

mostly they just use 3rd party voice chat

Back in the 90s - early 2000s, I learned english just through playing Starcraft online, I had the privilege to learn a whole language while having so much fun. And we only had 56k limited to some hours where connecting was free and sometimes, there where disconnections just because a phone call occured.

Nowaday, high speed internet is basically mandatory, there's no more limits but kids can't even enjoy their funny lego games because of pedos. I feel bad for them.

I'm late for the news but it is one of the reason parents should pry on what their children are doing in the web. Keep their consoles, pc at a distance you can still monitor somehow like a living room or a gaming room with easy access from anyone in the house. Preadators are slimy bastards and will do their worst to get close to children in the most nefarious of ways.

I'm not against adult and children interacting but it lies in the parents to guide and talk openly with their children on how to deal with this type of stuff and how to identify potential threats. Godspeed today's parents in teaching to not rely on strangers without being wary of them.

My kids have been playing Roblox since they where little, I had that shit locked down, no private messaging, no chat no fuck all and the only ones added to their friends list was other kids I knew, as a parent it's our responsibility to monitor that shit and lock it down

It's as if a high percentage of humans have an instinct to commit horrendous acts, despite knowing the potential consequences of doing them.

Learning ramifications isn't enough for many, so HARSH punishments are needed to eliminate the perps, if they can't be discouraged.

Child predators should simply be (judiciously) sentenced to death.

I cannot fathom how this could still be a hot topic.

Regulators need to clamp down on this shit.

No excuse for it in the age of modern AI tech.

Modern AI solution should make it entirely feasible to detect predatory behaviours (e.g. ANY attempts to ask people about their real names, addresses locations, as well as sexual or suggestive comments etc) then auto ban and report to the authorities.

Or if you want to be even smarter about it; there should be a programme whereby they get reported to the police, who would (instead of banning or tipping them off) then basically attempt to honeypot them by using an AI agent pretending to be a minor with the aim to get them to arrange a meet, where the police would be waiting to catch them dead to rights.

Entrapment is illegal

Seriously. If you have logs and it's something you can prove without a doubt, what's the hang up? Just remove them and hope evolution erases whatever fucked up trait their fucked up blood line perpetuated.

The man should be punished if found guilty. Legal or not, i have a strong dislike how Roblox polices its community, and WOULD LOVE to see Roblox come under scrutiny and have very strict rules placed on them by governments around the world.

Actually, if I had one wish in gaming, this is it. Clamp down on Roblox and Discord . I used to see these older adults talking to my son and other kids on Roblox. Man, i would be pissed. Roblox, imo is not a safe place for kids to play, and adults have no business on the platform, short of being a developer.

Roblox is also, imo…the greatest threat to Sony, Nintendo and MS.

It is ironic that Nintendo is pushing communication as one of its big new features. I have actually come around to the idea of "no chat" and just have emotes. I kind of like that better.

And here I am still using the 'I don't have a mic' excuse (despite my controller and headset having them built-in) so I don't have to talk to people. I don't know what my parents did but 20 years later and I still barely communicate with people online.

A young child gets kidnapped by a predator and you're saying it's because the child is stupid?

The fuck is wrong with you
I didn't talk about this specific child (since I don't know the specific circumstances), I talked about a hypothetical 9 year old child who is stupid enough to meet someone without telling first to his parents. Yes, some children are stupid and that is what the pedos take advantage of. The fuck is wrong with you?

Why are you talking about a hypothetical situation when a REAL situation is literally the reason this thread is up...

You say what the fuck is wrong with him, but what the fuck is wrong with you trying to make it seem like it's a kids fault if they get groomed into meeting an adult and then worse. You REALLY should stop talking.

Well, only a pedo would say that a kid who met him isn't stupid and it should keep behaving this way. The solution is to teach children and if they are stupid, ban them from the internet. Not burying our heads in the sand.

For those calling for the death penalty, I completely disagree.

What needs to happen to this "man" is that he's put in the general population of a prison and what he's done is "accidentally" leaked out to the rest of the inmates.

Justice would then be swift.

Death penalty should be normalized in society and human rights orgs should be banned from protesting it or speaking in favor of the pedophile.

A global consensus, not just certain regions/countries.

Human behavior needs moderation, and extreme acts like this, which can alter society, can have extreme consequences, and it's okay.

I can understand boomer parents being a little oblivious like mine were.

Millennial parents who were using this stuff years before they even had kids have no fucking excuse though.

What happened to the 2000s where the worst person you could meet in a video game was a Call Of Duty/Halo player

The problem with Roblox is that it has become a byword for this kind of behaviour since a certain ripoff of ToonTown Online introduced house parties.

I remember using it in 2015 and the demographics of the playerbase were a lot more distributed, and each game had people of varying ages. Nowadays like <1% are over 18 and most of the games are a sloppy substitute for Vtech games

No. Normalizing killing is what lead to actual innocent people being killed because someone NEEDED someone to blame and punish.

Besides, the death penalty DOESN'T alter behavior. It hasn't in all the time we've had it. People STILL commit murder, pedophilia, torture, kidnapping, etc. The threat of prison or death has not been a deterrent for any of them.

Kids shouldn't be allowed on the internet, in fact should be illegal it's bad for them anyway. That's my opinion
So instead of stopping assholes (child kidnappers, rapists etc.) you'd rather just ban kids off the internet?

I just want to make sure I get what you're saying.

Well no I'm not saying these people shouldn't be punished but what good comes from kids on the internet.... It just fucks up their brain development. I think the negatives outweigh the positives...

The internet is now a tool we all use and if parents supervise their kids correctly, then it's ok to use. What's wrong with looking at articles etc on the internet? We shouldn't ban and punish the kids for using it.
