11-year-old kills himself after texting prank

Whoever did this prank is going to be fucked from guilt for the rest of their lives regardless of how much therapy they do.

H- wait, I actually don't know if you're serious.

I don't think a person capable of setting up a scheme like that - apparently that wasn't a single SMS chain job - would necessarily have started caring before charges were filled. Maybe it would even be a positive surprise at first.

I can't answer for them but I will say, for myself, I thought there was serious discussion in the past about telling people to kill themselves being very unacceptable. To the point where it's a bannable offense online in my places like gaming forums, social media, etc. But then for it to be perfectly okay (as to it being considered a crime) seems to tell me otherwise. It's confusing for me to be sure.

There are a lot of things you would get banned for around here and other private forums that wouldn't be considered a crime in most countries people are posting from. I don't see how that's really relevant.

God's had his chance.
Sometimes reading responses from people here on GAF - reasoned and thought out life experiences with vastly different beginnings and journeys through life - some much harsher and rougher and some easier and even blessed upbringings of privilege and still from all walks of life there are stories of people that have contemplated or attempted serious self harm or suicide really goes a long way towards informing me of just how pervasive and wide spread depression and such really is.

I've never once in my whole life considered taking my life. Never once been so sad and downtrodden that I would consider myself depressed. I've been through some shit but always had a roof over my head and family that loves me and friends that I could relate to. Never have I felt (even in my super young middle school and high school days) a connection to someone so intense and blinding that their death or absence would make me consider anything drastic. Just kind of shrug and say my goodbyes and move on.

You guys really teach me a lot and help keep my eyes and mind open to this kind of stuff. I am especially grateful to all of you for being brave enough to open up about a lot of this stuff as I move further and further into my life as a father. I'm sure some of this stuff is bound to come up for my lil girl down the line and you all equip me to process and anticipate and understand this kind of stuff so much better.

Here's hoping that I'll have the knowledge but never need it.

Love ya, GAF.

I almost feel like you would be justified in totally NSA style intercepting all the shit your kids are doing on social media these days.

This seems like a huge overreaction for a normal kid to have. Something doesnt make sense to me

For me, this as well.

It's AWFUL and a disgusting prank to pull on someone, but I'd hope most 11 year olds wouldn't kill themselves at the suggestion that a significant other did.

I'm 33...have times changed that much?

"Oh Juliet"

This has been a thing for centuries.

Most? No. But some? It's always been like that.

As someone who has two young children, it's stuff like this that scares me the most. As far as we know, the kid didn't make any effort to tell his parents, family or friends. He just took his life because of a text.

It's chilling to consider an eleven year old understanding how to *hang himself*. Just unspeakable.

Fucking horrible. What a tragic thing to happen. Kids can be vicious, and parents can't be there 24/7 to ensure that their own children are behaving responsibly. I remember being 11, and this type of shit was the last thing on my mind. Then again, at age 11, I was more the victim of bullying than in any position to do bullying myself, not that I wanted to. I just never understood why young folks would be so monstrous to one another. These types of "pranks" are awful.

I feel bad for the parents involved, and the victim. Just depressing.

Having a high functioning autistic kid this scares the shit out of me.

I had to explain to my 9 year old that his bully doesn't really have 100 play stations. Imagine when he can communicate with other kids when I'm not around.

Wonderfully thoughtful and empathetic post :) The value of that willingness to listen and learn about other people's experiences can't be overstated.

Wait, what? Did she do that on purpose knowing he'd kill himself?

And what the fuck. Seriously. Who fabricates a fake death for themselves? I mean take it that far though? Even at 8 I understood you don't do that shit.

Like did she understand what death is? Was she just wanting to see a reaction?

This is baffling. And sad. She sounds like she needs to attend therapy.

Edit: And the parent. Seriously. Why did you just not talk to him about dating? His pent up emotions might have made him to something at that moment. Sad.

What a terrible story. It makes me fearful of having children some day. I definitely won't let them "date" at such a young age. Their emotions are too potent and reason too weak. RIP.

What a sad story, but damn this thread making me pull out my hair. Its just words? It's just what kids do? The girl shouldn't have criminal charges?

In a thread where words led a boy to kill himself, people argue words are just words.

RIP little boy, you were too good for this cruel world with cruel people.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
To whom? I'm sorry common sense hurt your feelings.

Try telling anyone, even an adult, to get over suicidal thoughts by using common sense and see how that works out for you. That, or just take your own advice and use some common sense as to why what you said is ignorant and insensitive.

Where did I say the kid should have gotten over his suicidal thoughts using common sense?

It sucks all around. She really needs mental help. I don't think charges should be applied unless it's clear the intent was to make his suicide a reality. The slippery slope if not would be insane. We all have said (most likley before I get a not me response) mean or downright heartless things in the heat of the moment. We dont actually mean the words we use when we get angry. So I cant justify a charge unless it was clearly and beyond a shadow of a doubt(as any charge should go honestly) murder through suicide but more than anything my heart goes to the parents who have to be beyond words destroyed.

The girl sounds like a lost cause for sure but Im really not sure if that prank on its own is enough to make a 11 year old commit suicide unless he already had some mental or emotional issues.

There should be a law against motivating suicide especially if there is proof.

But you can't predict what's going to push someone over the edge. This is a terrible story, but I don't like the idea of laws that say that you can't be mean to someone.

In my experience kids do stupid shit like this. That doesn't make it ok that a kid was killed but from the little bit of background we have I am not going to say the girl was some evil villain. We don't know the background of anyone involved except from the boy's mother. For all we know the girl could have been breaking up with him and came up with a stupid way to do it. What we do have is that she didn't tell him to kill himself she just didn't report that he said he was going to kill himself. That is where there is a problem but I don't know if I would have believed that at 13 either.

There should be a law against motivating suicide especially if there is proof.

Maybe but in this case there is not anything saying she encouraged him to kill himself. All we have is that he said he was going to do it and she didn't report it. If she was egging him on I could understand but it seems like she just broke off communication at a certain point.

Fuck. Poor kid. Years ago I'd have been so angry. Now, as a dad, this sort of thing wrenches at my heart incredibly. Fuck.

Best wishes to the family. Hope they can make it through this as well as possible.

Hope the kid who did the prank gets some therapy because daaaamn that is a heavy price for a prank.

That's...that's probably something they need to change.
Um... no? How would could that possibly be a good idea?
