12h Skyrim Marathron on Giant Bomb 11.10.11 (hosted by Greg Kasavin)

HOLY SHIT. that dwarf colossus is FUCKING BADASS. I'm so giddy over here <3

edit: ^ yeah he actually is pretty bad. Almost painful to watch sometimes lol.

what I love about this dungeon is that he came across it in classic Bethesda style. He said he wanted to get back on the main quest, then he stumbled onto this on his way towards it and has spent a ton of time here.

Greg Kasavin! I loved you from Gamespot video reviews! I totally forgot about this guy, crazy.

Video is super stuttery for me in firefox and safari, chrome worked.

Is it just me or did that dungeon he's raiding right now get seriously easier after he died and reloaded?

The first time he went in, he faced 3 Bandit thugs and got destrored, 2nd time he went in there was Bandit Outlaws who were much weaker, with the 3 thugs nowhere to be found... what's up with that?

sigh, his play style is really killing my hype for the game. I can only watch him swing horizontally and miss with the power attack so many times :/ Watched some other vids where people use sword and board and magic more and luckily that helped

It adapts the difficulty to how well he does. He showed the settings for it before. You can also set it to a single difficulty should you want that.

Or at least this is my understanding from watching this stream :P

Uh, no, that is not what "adept" means, its just the normal setting.

This General Stone Fist guy, sounds like the Colonel Campbell from Metal Gear Solid.

Speaking of which, General Tullius (or however it's spelled, the Imperial General anyway...) I'm pretty sure is voiced by the guy who played Saul Tigh in Battlestar Galactica. I think I read he was voice talent for the game earlier anyway.

Which version is he playing? Looks like shit.

360. but I think it's the stream making it look like such crap. even at 720p+, there's large compression artefacts on the screen. it doesn't seem to like fog and snow particles.

Yeah, that's gotta be Campbell. Has the same low pitch, what I'd describe as "gurgle" on certain syllables.

I don't know, some of those textures are looking rough.

Damn, this game really looks absolutely terrible at times. Many, many of the textures are severly underwhelming, and many models are pretty bad as well. I'm not expecting top-tier visual detail on everything in a huge game like this, but I mean, just look at this dude (not Greg, lol):

What's going on here? Yeah, he's a minor character I guess, and obviously wouldn't be given as much attention as more important characters and things, but still. That torso texture is just hilariously bad. Is this because the consoles are so memory-depraved, or is it because a DVD simply can't fit enough high-res textures for this huge game? If so, does the PS3 version look less horrible? What about the PC version?

Sorry for the rant, but that just struck me as almost inexcusably bad, despite this being the game it is. There seem to be huge inconsistencies regarding textures, where an area with otherwise decent textures will have a bunch of N64-quality ones here and there.

(And yeah, I know the compression makes everything look even worse, but that can't explain away that texture.)

So I never played Oblivion but loved the Witcher 2. This looks boring compared to Witcher, at least from what I've seen. Maybe it's just a different type of game. I've got it preordered on Steam but I'm just hoping there is more action. I might have just been tuning in when nothing is going on. I've only seen a few battles so far.

There's a problem with texture streaming on 360 that was just acknowledged by Bethesda.
Lots of people talking about it in the OT, i hope there's a patch soon.

Honestly you shouldn't judge the game from this marathon, he's a cool guy but he's the most boring TES player i've seen.

Xbox is fucked right now and a lot of textures are bugged and won't stream right, not sure if its effected the ugly dude, but its a good chance.

Yeah, but doesn't that usually show up on the weapon you're using, your hands, etc.? Haven't seen that happen from what I've watched of the stream. I've just seen some freaking horrible textures here and there, in the environments and on characters.

There's a texture loading bug that Bethesda is aware of and will be patched. The 360 install is under 4GB, so it's not a DVD issue.

Edit: beaten, should have reloaded the page.

I did see some rock textures looking gnarly in non moving scenes. but that stuff was mentioned in reviews and doesn't surprise me.

overall, I like the look.

It's more than that apparently.

There's a lot of very ugly low res shit on PC too at times. On ultra, not sure if it just refused loading or whatever but :

There's a lot more examples. Look at how the rock textures are most of the time and then suddenly something like this pops up. Also they couldn't be bothered texturing the fucking start shield properly.

It seems to be effecting everything, it really stands out in the ps3/xbox comparison video.

This is definitely a game where it's better to wait and play it yourself than watch other people play it. This is pretty dull to watch.

Ok, but are we sure that's all there is to it? Again, a DVD can only hold so much data. Where other developers require several DVDs for their much smaller games (and PS3 devs sometimes use upp full BDs), Bethesda has somehow crammed this massive game (containing a huge world, loads of different characters and items, textures to go with all of that, hours of spoken dialogue and music, etc.) onto a single DVD. Somewhere compromises must have been made, right?

Oh, don't get me wrong, game looks like dog shit, but it looks even worse on the xbox.

I'd definitely do things differently myself. It's only really dull when he gets lost or such due to short term memory loss or something.

It's still fascinating just seeing all the different things you can do, not having the game yet. Though it is frustrating when he hasn't even embarked on the second major quest yet, after getting it about an hour in.

I've been watching this on and off all day...so, just to confirm, he has not gotten up to eat or go to the bathroom?

I feel like the decision to have a more dry, laid-back character that Greg is play the game helps in that regard. If Jeff, for example, was playing, there'd be funny moments mixed with dull stretches. Greg's playing through it with a similar tone all the while, so your interest remains consistent.

Best part about this for me is the utter lack of interactivity between the community and Greg. Normally they'd have someone watching chat, so literally locking Greg in with the game and nothing else is refreshing. You really wouldn't want chat barking shit at you anyway, even if the game isn't out yet.

This game looks ugly as hell. YOU LIED TO ME, PRERENDERED TRAILERS.

The game looks great if you take into account the size of the world and amount of content. It looks like a generation beyond Oblivion IMO.

Now I'm dead.

he's made the same move (a mistake, imo) of running away from the magic user in the group when they can be killed easily as they have so little health. as he runs away, his health gets whittled down and then he gets smoked.

just chop those three fools right away and be done with it.
