Alright, alright, I've got a hard now on and I'm ready.
Serious question now. Do you honestly think specs alone will take Sony back to the great heights where they once were? Because that's what I think a lot of you guys out here are banking on.
Where do you even come up with this stuff? You honestly believe people expect Sony to get back to the top because of specs alone?

Without a new influx of Japanese developers, Sony is no more than a 2nd rate western console manufacturer in my eyes. In order for me to consider switching from X1 to PS4, Sony has to go back to their roots and develop the type of games that got them to the top in the first place.

For all the acclaim Cerny has garnered in the very short few months on here, the very fact that he showcased Knack, still leaves me quite perplexed to this very day. Now i'm not shitting on the game in any way at all, haven't played it. But if Miyamoto was to say, reveal Knack as his latest project, all of us on Gaf would know instantly that something is up with the guy. We wouldn't have to guess would we?

He specifically says this generation. Indicating that a track record established over the last 7 years is counting as something. Why do we need to wait and see? We just look at the data on GAF.
Sony was the more popular publisher compared to Microsoft over the last 5 years here, if we go by the game of the year voting that occurs every year and goes back to 2006.
There isn't really any debate about quantity of big budget titles (which is what AAA means). Quality wise Sony was also better represented in that category.
You can individually decide that you dislike all games by Sony and whatever, nobody is taking that away from you but to deny the AAA exclusives (which again just means big budget) is wrong.
No forced kinect/ps eye.

Its called a Sample Size, its impossible to poll everyone who owns a current gen hardware. While this is not a random sample it is important to know that it will be a nightmare trying to collect random data of 500,000 People who own consoles talk less of finding out the failure rate of said consoles.

I would be surprised if its less than 3-1.

Consider that the PS3 has been outselling the 360 worldwide by millions for some time. How do you reconcile that? Then account for the PS4 being 100 dollars less expensive and the shrinkage of the UK market (Microsofts only leading market in Europe) and that the PS is launching in over twice as many countries this year. It's also more powerful. for what that's worth.
I'd be interested in hearing you reply to this without getting into a vague semantics debate.
PS4 will probably outsell the ONE by 2-1 for this year, if not more. Maybe as high as 4-1 with all the other countries contributing.. maybe.
Good point forgot the extra countries PS4 has. This time next year I would be surprised if it was higher then 55:45 in sonys favour.
The reason I say this is because I think more casuals will go to the X1.
I think the PS4 will have a similar problem to the vita has had with casuals, that its to core focused( this is the only aspect I think the PS4 has in common with the vita).
Maybe I am wrong and the PS4 eye will have a ton of great support, but so far I think casuals will be far more interested in TV + kinect features. I think the PS4 will have an issue of being just a new box with prettier graphics, this is great for the hardcore but in this market more is needed to win the heart of the casual, and before anyone say ''but the X1 is $100 more'' , Yes it is but people would rather buy the thing they want even its more expensive, it wont matter to the casual that the PS4 is $100 cheaper because it wont have the features that got them interested in the first place (kinect and av/tv control/functionality), So if a casual is not going to buy a X1 at $499 they aint gonna get a PS4 at $399 either.
AFAIK PS3/360 didn't have native 7.1 quality, if you've ever had a PC with a dedicated sound card you'd notice the enormous difference in quality. The current gen consoles didn't have any dedicated sound support right?
You're talking from US or outside US perspective ? Coz' even now, with X360 being good value proposition , more people choose PS3. Unless any breakthrough happens, there won't be close to parity situation, more like 2:1. Outside US.

I'am talking worldwide sales. With the WiiU selling not well. those 70 million casual owners are up for grabs.Microsoft are trying to get the best of both worlds get the casual with Kinect + TV and get the core gamer and the hardcore cod,fifa and soon to be titanfall player.
I see the X1 like the wii but if the wii had spec 50% less then the 360 and 3rd party support like the PS3+360.
I wonder how the current gen console landscape would have looked if that was the case.

Wii did those big numbers mostly because it was cheap.

Casuals won't ever buy a brand new console if it's priced more than 250/300$.
Plus, the Wii had the wow factor (for casuals) in the wiimote games, but where's the wow factor in the kinect Xbone games? I mean, a casual who already has Dance Central on the 360 couldn't care less to shell out more money just to have enhanced graphics of the very same game.

No, but better specs, an earlier launch in a lot of countries, 20% cheaper then Xbox, playstation plus, a superior stable of first party studios, and a stronger brand ( as opposed to 2006 ) will ensure Sony will eat a big fat chunk of Microsoft's pie. Will it regain ps2 status ? Highly unlikely, just like Xbox one having a launch that will be as succesful as the 360's.
I feel like you're betting way too much on the appeal of TV functionality and Kinect. And the 70 million casuals who existed for the Wii have also been absorbed into the IOS/Android market. There's a reason that Kinect didn't put up anything close to Wii numbers.
ia'm saying the X1 is like the wii because it comes with a new motion controller, but the X1 also has the benefit of having competitive hardware.
I think Kinect champions has some wow factor with the facial scanning and snazzy graphics combined with near 1.1 controls and even if its not as much as the wii, its more the PS4 which counts for something even if the price is higher.

Casuals are not interested in a $500 console. And many hardcore gamers are not interested in a $500 console with less power than the cheaper competition, too. This strategy will horribly fail.

Gamecube didn't have any gimmicky controllers or anything, it was a cheap console with not so many games.

There is one fundamental flaw in your reasoning: casuals are not early adopters, they don't spend 500 usd/euro on consoles. You talk about Kinect and TV as if they're game changers, they're not. Kinect already exists, people know what it is. The casual will see this in store and think its exactly like their Kinect at home. Yes it has better tracking, thats it. Its not a selling point to the casual and certainly not at 500 bucks.
So no, Microsoft will not grab the casual gamers. They either moved on to mobiles or buy cheaper current gen consoles.
At launch I expect sales to be 60:40 in PS4s favour, both consoles will sell lots those day 1 hardcore fans, next year its gonna be 70:30 in PS4s favor, the less enthousiast gamer will decide his/her purchase on the price. Not on Kinect and TV.
