well yes is bad for new users...good for the old x360 one...ill get one for 299 ..givin them the 360

I don't speak Italian, but are you sure that the deal is not more like "Trade in your 360 (or three games, or whatever) and get a discount of 100€ for a total price of 399€"? Such things are rarely cumulative but capped.

Casuals are not interested in a $500 console. And many hardcore gamers are not interested in a $500 console with less power than the cheaper competition, too. This strategy will horribly fail.

So who will take the effort to inform the casuals?

Well I'm posting according to my opinion.
I'm sorry, I thought this was America :P
(Randy quote)
And no, it's not my "intention" but something some of you guys want to see.

Please don't take offense to my post, it's just how you come off with the tone. Guess the negative stigma surrounding X1 doesn't help either.

I do know how you feel. My main console is the Xbox 360 although I have them all including a gaming PC. MS have managed to hack me off as well. Here is my list:-

* The performance. I can't believe they did give it a better GPU. PS4 is going to out perform them for the entire generation.
* The DRM thing. Even though they 180'd on it.

The final straw for me was the pricing. £429 for a console is just insane. My next console is going to be a PS4 and I'm going to only have one next gen console (excluding the WiiU I already have).
I really don't know where I'm going to put them all.
Exactly!
And just as week speak, my GTX770, my mainboard, my power-supply and my PC tower arrived. Now I have everything ;) Can't wait to set this thing up today ;D

Nah, no problem!
I know what you mean, because I'm really not a "friend" of the XBone since the reveal.

LOL. You're going to be a busy man. Let me know how you get on :)

The point I am trying to make is casuals (and lots of other people) don't see them 'a completely separate value proposition' . They are devices that play games and do few other things. They fall into same category regardless of logo and package.
And preorder numbers, even though skewed towards hardcore population for now, seem to confirm my thinking.
Unless PS4 is so much better value proposition in terms of games and additional services it provides.

Of course they do if they never bought an Xbox 360 or used it for games. And of course pre-orders are skewed towards gamers. When have non-gamers ever pre-ordered a console?

I don't blame you bud, I really don't :)

Neither is an impulse buy, so the price really doesn't do much at first.

Games will be a primary factor deciding between the two the first year or so.

Oh, and everyone is downplaying marketing here. Marketing will be way more important for either than price in the first years to get momentum going.

Just look at other electronics sectors, $100 is nothing on what people decide to buy (be it smart phones, tablets, laptops, etc...) when they are first released. Price elasticity is pretty small on electronics items until they really drop to the impulse buying zone.

But it is monetary more times than not.

So how do tablets work. You can get a 16 gig ipad for $500 but you can also get a 16 gig android tablet for $150 . If it was just monetary obviously the android tablet would sell.

The same time you can buy plastic head phoens for $5 or for $150 with the beats name slapped on them. But beats are extremely popular and sought after.

And lets bring it back to video games. The ps3 through the generation cost any where from $100-$300 more than the xbox 360 but has still managed to sell close to parity with the system.

So if it was just monetary those examples wouldn't be valid .

In other sectors, You have dozens if not hundreds of devices, not 2 or 3. Price gaps do not exist and You can always buy something sligthly better or more appealing for 5$ more. Hence price is not that important as functionality and brand.

Here, we're talking just 2 devices with 25% price gap and little understanding (this is where marketing will help and need to happen to inform and educate the consumer why he would have to spend 100$ more) .

In console space, there is not a single case of overly expensive (look at your pocket, how much You shell, not what You get for it) device which was successful. At certain price point it really doesn't matter what You get. You don't need it at this price.

Money does count, it's your examples that are flawed.
Why do people buy shoes which cost 100$ when in another store there are the almost same shoes available at 20$ instead?
Brand perception is the key.
Apple has established itself as the equivalent of a high fashion Italian factory, so people are willing to pay more for their stylish products.
On the contrary MS always represented the equivalent of a cheap Chinese factory (just look at the Xbone design, it's the exact opposite of something you would proudly show to your friends) but they've been thinking they are Apple for some years now and people will buy their products whatever the price.
See how well that turned out with Surface, and the many failed consumer products MS had in the last few years.

"Casuals" (lol) are also not interested in a $400 console. Neither of these consoles will be in mass market territory for years.

Interesting that the Microsoft breakdown shows 30GB/s to the CPU for the Xbox One, while the PS4 has 20. The PS4 allocates way more to the GPU of course, but it's interesting that they didn't decide to give it a bit more of the bandwidth while Microsoft did with less overall bandwidth to spare.

The PS4 uses the missing 10GBps for the added Onion+ bus.

I would proudly show off my xbox one. It looks a lot nicer than the ps4.

You speak of brand perception but sony's brand has been all but non existant for years. The company is clawing its way back to relevance and doing a poor job in most catagories.

Kinda sounds like Microsoft's current performance in many sectors as well.

Do you know something?

Also if you ask me the Xbox One CPU clock boost to 1.75GHz kinda add fire to the old rumors about the PS4 CPU being clocked at 1.8GHz.

How? MS is not aware of Sony's specs. Unless they are! But that's too much of a conspiracy for it to happen.

And yet despite releasing a year later for a hundred dollars more, the PS3 is still going to outsell the 360. What does that tell you about Microsofts brand perception?

You forgot to mention 3 $100 prioce drops, 1 $50 price drop and 1 $20 price increase that Sony had to do to get the PS3 price competive while Microsoft only did 1 $100 price drop. (I'm talking about the USA.)

Nothing to do with MS but the fact that 1.8GHz rumors was kinda looked over because standard Jaguar CPU's are clocked at 1.6GHz .

I don't think that there is a standard clock for Jaguar. AMD's own products seem to range from 1Ghz to 2Ghz. AnandTech speculated that 1,6Ghz might be a sweet spot since both consoles seemed to have chosen that clock speed independently.

The Xbox has always had cheaper options than the PS3 until very recently, so I'm not sure what your point is? Of course the cost of electronics go down over time, every single console in history has done this.

That "sweet spot" was for TDP relative to performance.

My point is, based on how stingy Microsoft was with price drops, they seemed to not be competing for install base like Sony was. The fact is the XBox 360 should be a lot cheaper now than it is being 8 years old and very obsolete.

That "sweet spot" was for TDP relative to performance.

Yes, but they derived their data by comparing two Jaguar APUs with different GPUs (one with 1,5Ghz CPU clock and 500mhz GPU clock and the other with 2,0Ghz CPU clock and 600mhz GPU clock). Between those two APUs, there was a TDP difference of 10 watts (66%). In addition, the GPU models were different. So I don't think that their conclusion about this sweet spot is valid. I think their main reason for that conclusion was the observation that both consoles went for the same CPU/GPU clock speeds.

That Albert guy said specs dont matter much

why this boost crap constantly getting articles?

Because journalists have decided to make articles out of this. It's not like MS is itself really over-hyping this boost, some exec just mentioned it in some confrence and Albert Penello confirmed it. In twitter.

I'm pretty sure that if i give my House Deeds to a seller he will give me a XBone for free.
Is XBone free?

I get a free carrot with my Xbox One?

Yep, apparently you do.

It's literally a carrot on a stick system.

Where is it obvious that the ps3 is outselling the xbox 360. Show the proof or it didn't happen.

you mean like the proof that the PS3 launched an entire year after the 360, yet now has more units sold?...

is this where i get to end my post with a #TRUTHFACT??

http://www.geekwire.com/2013/xbox-update-console-full-production-improved-cpu-performance/

"About one month after improving the GPU clock speed, Mehdi added that Microsoft just made another technical boost by upgrading the CPU performance to 1.75 GHZ from 1.6 GHZ."

Interesting, should add wood to the fire and hopefully result in additional real world performance. I guess we'll see if there is separate confirmation from Albert or Marc on this.

UPDATE: CPU upclock confirmed by Albert Penello.

How the fuck does this even work? Wouldn't making such a huge change mere weeks before the console releases cause trouble for pretty much everyone involved?

I think they did test it and saw there will no problem. Also revealing this information now doesn't mean that they did it just now. They probably upclocked before and they choose to reveal it now.

They also probably had it in the cards before they settled on the final numbers.

Where back to the ps3 outselling the 360 again? Talking about beating a dead horse without any proof.

Is the sky blue? This isn't a debate. The PS3 has outsold the 360 worldwide after releasing a year late. There's no discussion to be had on that front.

What's all this talk about some supposed hidden layer containing the amd volcanic islands design?
Seen it on a couple of sites.

Can't see it myself.

Rumor/speculation. Will be confirmed/debunked by October.
I believe September 26th is Microsoft's conference, which is the day after AMD's reveal.
