Also, when it come to the ethics of guns, my take is a little split:
I disagree with them fundamentally, and if it was possible to immediately snap my fingers and halt the manufacture, sale, use and existence of guns, I would. They are a tool whose only purpose is to cause suffering.
That said, every time I look at a book detailing their history and get to see all the different famous models, it is fascinating. For better or worse, guns are such a deep part of the American fabric. AND, when I was in the Army, I was a crack shot with that M-16 and I enjoyed shooting it. I even got a trophy for it, and I could disassemble, clean and reassemble it as fast as anyone.
Guns are an iconic part of America's past, present and future. I don't know if they're something we should be particularly proud of, as with say... baseball, cinema, jazz or aviation. But they're part of our DNA, like it or not.
