How many you got on your list?
This is why a nomination round would be a great idea.

I just went to Wikipedia and looked at lists of cartoons that began between 2000 and 2009. So over 70.

Most of the cartoons on the list are just there for laughs, like the reboot of Biker Mice From Mars

Kill : Reboot

Kill : Reboot

Save : X-Men

There are still a lot of super hero shows left, but I think my favorite was X-Men so I'll save that.

Edit : Fuck it pains me to do this to Reboot after trying to save it for so long.

foster's home for imaginary friends
the mighty b!

not a fan of every one of these shows, nor have i seen a lot of them, but i think this is a fairly comprehensive list. and it's 50 shows, so that's nice and easy.

i just realized the critic wasn't in the 90s list.

You may be interested to know that The Tick is already going to die by a pretty decent margin, but this Reboot show is in contention with X-men, with X-men currently being on the chopping block by a few points.

Just food for thought.

Here is a list. It doesn't include shows that begin airing in the 90s like the Simpsons or South Park and doesn't include shows past 2009 like Adventure Time. I also didn't include anime for this one.

Kill: The Tick
Save: Courage

I never really enjoyed The Tick. Courage is a classic, that cartoon scared me as a kid in a good way. It can't go... just yet.

That's why I would like to see seperate anime survivor thread.

Yup. It would be weird if someone saw who the winner of a cartoon survivor on Gaf was, and they saw an anime. Then it would be more of "how did an anime win a cartoon contest" instead of "how did this cartoon win."

I'm one of those people that separate cartoons from anime.

i don't. it's still animation. it feels weird to discount a show for simply being made in a different country.

Just two or three more Reboot kills or X-Men saves GAF. You can do it; Canada's not watching.

The Tick is already going to die.

Edit: 10 minutes. Votes aren't final till then; You can totally still edit them!

Kill: Ducktales - Good show, just not in my top 10. Plus, I was mad fucking jealous of Scrooge McDuck's money bin.
Kill: Tiny Toons - Same here, but OMG if Clampett Corneal and Mango Juice weren't the funniest things on this show.
Save: Reboot - This save is Fax Modem and Data Nully approved.

I separate it because it's easier to manage. When I hear the word cartoon, I think of Looney Tunes, Hey Arnold, and Simpsons. When I hear Anime I think of DBZ, One Piece, and Pokemon. Putting the 2 together would just make a huge cluster of unmanagement.

Anime is a word to easily find a Japanese cartoon, while just the word cartoon is to find an American/Canada cartoon. The big artstyle difference in Japan was the main reason it got it's own category for it's cartoons.

It had to be done. For the greater good.

I appreciate the effort, but someone counter-edited. If I was a dirtbag I'd have PM'ed people to change their votes, but alas :P

This is the first time I've actually been disappointed in a result. I saw all of Reboot...it was okay. It was really good in that last season even. It was also the harbinger of cheap, horrible CGI garbage that still plagues us to this day. It was a revolution in animation, but when people say that they often forget that it was a bad revolution.

Voting is now closed.

I'm thinking of not including anime just because there's many shows already on the 00s list.

just call it animation survivor. i think it's too late to backtrack when you already had three anime on this list. and i think we can agree there would have been more if anime was bigger in the 90s. the 2000s, especially the early 2000s, were the anime boom. not only did it dominate cartoon network and adult swim (oops forgot trigun again), but lots of american shows started using it as a basis for their visual styles, including avatar, teen titans, and jackie chan adventures (just off the top of my head). not including it would be denying a huge focus of animation in the west as far as production and scheduling goes.

I think Nasty's save would have sunk the good ship Xmen anyway, but I won't know til he posts the final results.

Reboot is easily the most rose tinted show left in this competition.

To be honest, I think the most rose tinted show left is DBZ. A lot of people are willing to overlook its flaws because of how nostalgic it is to a lot of people.

Why? It's the fucking Tick.

Save: DBZ

Call to arms: Kill The Powerpuff Girls, Tiny Toons, Superman TAS, The Tick

All these cartoons would make this list VERY hard for me to do. I love every single one of these shows so I'm not even sure which one I would vote off.

Also, putting Clerks on that list:

I wish I didn't just change my avatar from Jay back to Starfire Toaster.

EDIT: Nvm. Just saw that you said no shows after 2009.

It's a shame that Clerks TAS didn't last long. I remember watching a rerun of it and was really disappointed when I found out it only had I think 6 episodes.

That's exactly what I mean. The fight scenes were radical, and that's something that a lot of people remember. But there's also the pacing issues, the abundance of filler, and the uselessness of half of the characters. Like Yamcha.

The Z-Fighters were kind of hold overs from Dragon Ball, but they do have utility every now and again (Tien fighting off Cell for a while, Krillin's death leading to Goku turning Super Saiyan, Yajirobe cutting off Vegeta's tail, etc). The pacing is a bit off in the Frieza saga until Vegeta actually gets to Namek, but it's not as bad as people make it out to be. Everything after that is 00's.

It should stay cartoons and just do a separate anime thread. If anime is included there is a massive chance it'll be 9 anime + avatar in the top 10, that would be boring.

I actually think some deserving anime would be voted off before their time for being anime. I also think that there's no way Justice League wouldn't make the top 10.

oh and for being just five years in, the 2010s look like this:

gravity falls
the legend of korra
regular show
star wars: the clone wars
teenage mutant ninja turtles (2012)
phineas and ferb
adventure time
sym-bionic titan
archer
the venture bros.
south park
the simpsons
american dad
fullmetal alchemist brotherhood
that goat anime
batman: the brave and the bold
bob's burgers
futurama
the looney tunes show
scooby doo! mystery incorporated
tron: uprising
young justice
sanjay and craig
rick and morty

Justice League will get destroyed if I have anything to say about it.

Could add Family Guy and My Little Pony (for shits and giggles) to that list, AniHawk.

Yeah there's just way too much content to include anime and there is already a massive anime community on GAF, they could run their own anime survivor thread.

i still think it's too late for that since it already happened in this thread. i feel this thread was created with an american lean anyway, which is why pokemon and dbz and sailor moon are all on the list instead of a wider variety of anime from the 90s like mobile suit gundam: 08th ms team.

i get the feeling that yu yu hakusho, yu-gi-oh, inuyasha, and a lot of similar shows would be voted off pretty quick. the ones that would make it into the top ten are bebop, ghost in the shell, flcl, and maybe champloo. given the proliferation of anime in that decade, i think it's a pretty good representation of what was actually on tv for americans instead of pretending teen titans and invader zim were all the rage in that same time frame.

it isn't about anime in the decade. it's about anime made for western audiences- decided by production companies and networks. a lot of my favorite stuff would probably be lost behind some obscure shit i've never heard of if it was a pure anime thread.

Xmen died Valiantly!
Editors note: Doing this entire thing on mobile so no spreadsheet or images for now. My internet is not working right now at home. Sorry. :(

The top two shows for this round were long survivors but ultimately they died. They were:
  1. The Tick (19 kills and 3 saves)
  2. X-Men (16 kills and 5 saves)
Top 5 were
  1. Reboot (16 kills and 7 saves)
  2. Doug (10 kills and 5 saves)
  3. Tiny Toons (4 kills and 1 save)
Bottom 2:
  1. Batman: Beyond (2 saves)
  2. Courage: the Cowardly Dog(5 kills and 9 saves)

80 kills this round of 13 shows.
Can't believe we're finally here and I really want to thank you guys for participating in this thread so without further ado!
Your TOP 20 cartoons as decided by you!
  • Spongebob Squarepants (Seasons 1-4)
  • Rocko's Modern Life
  • Hey! Arnold
  • Rugrats
  • Doug (Nickelodeon Version)
  • Dexter's Laboratory
  • The Powerpuff Girls
  • Courage the Cowardly Dog
  • Animaniacs
  • Batman:The Animated Series
  • Darkwing Duck
  • DuckTales
  • Gargoyles
  • Tiny Toons
  • The Simpsons
  • South Park
  • Superman The Animated Series
  • Batman Beyond
  • Reboot
  • DragonBall Z

Voting ends at midnight ET.
Vote away.

I think it would be more boring to run "American Cartoon's of the 00's Survivor" myself. If people enjoyed a show, does it matter where it came from?

If this thread is any indication, AnimeGAF isn't going to show up anyway. No one swooped in to save Sailor Moon and that is actually (no joke) a beloved show by a lot of anime fans.

Shows like DBZ, Pokemon, Yu GI Oh etc were more than just dubbed, they were straight up localized in that if you didn't know they were from Japan and didn't know what anime was they looked you would think they could be a western cartoon. The merchandising for those shows over here was also massive as opposed to shows like Cowboy Bebop which embraced their Japanese origins and aired on satellite channels only.

I think it would be boring to have Anime because it's fairly obvious that is what will be the most liked in the thread. I still don't think anime and Cartoons are the same thing, maybe that's because I don't watch any anime?

Ok so how about doing a top 10 anime list as nominated by you guys. You each come up with a list of ten. The top ten will be given a spot on the list. Has to have an English dub though.

Kill: Doug
Kill: Doug

I did enjoy some Doug but it's about time for it to get the door compared to the other shows. Courage got some heat and I think it can survive for at least a few more rounds.

more than the voice acting, they also dubbed over some of the sound effects to have them sound more realistic in some cases of cowboy bebop. the show people remember most in america is not the japanese one. the same can't be said for something like attack on titan. bebop is particularly weird to single out because it doesn't feel japanese with its noir aesthetic and jazzy/bluesy soundtrack.

Kill : Reboot
Kill : Reboot

Reboot barely escaped with its life and has gotten a ton of kills throughout the competition (just no death blows). It's made it to the top 20 despite looking like this (I couldn't find any decent GIF's on google...shocking):

The show is less about what it looks like and more about the ground it broke telling a story as part of a children's cartoon. Of course it's not going to hold up, all early nineties TV CG is garbage to look at now but it was written in a way that it believed children could handle a mature storyline. Some gnarly stuff happens in that show.

So you would call Bebop a cartoon? Most people I know that have watched it are pretty adamant that it isn't. I don't think it is either.

when i think cartoon, i think of newspaper comics. television animation is simply animation, no matter where it comes from.

.

Xmen opens with a girl being forced out of her home because she's a mutant, with the parents asking her if she could just stop being a mutant on her way out. It was a pretty clear "Hey those people telling gay people to stop being gay are pretty ridiculous, right?!" jab all the way back in the 90's, on a children's show.

Reboot certainly told an interesting story, but there were cartoons doing the same before it came along, with animation that was actually not eye destroying.

I'd be fine with that.
