I bought the game at a flea market three days before the release. I was amazed to find it there. It was actually an Austrian import...

I remember the Gamecube version imported from Japan. It required the freeloader disc to bypass region lock in europe.
And then I played the game in pretty much one sitting. At least without going to sleep. :messenger_grimmacing_

Back then, Nintendo was still a place where we could take a huge slap in the face. It was still the place to be, for third parties. I really miss that time.

Definitely one of the most influential games.

I was going thru a severe gaming burn-out back then. I wasn’t even buying any games nor playing games for months - even thought of getting rid of all consoles all together.

Then I saw the game in action on a TV nearby Gamestop, and it was an instant purchase right there. Rekindled my love for the medium. One of the greatest games, period.

It's the only game I've ever imported. I couldn't wait for the eventual European release, so I grabbed the U.S. version. If I remember rightly, I also had to use a Freeloader to get it to boot. Incredible game. I've played it so many times and went through it in VR a couple of years ago.

Back when I didn't know how to use the Internet properly I missed the day one release and got it months later like "OH SHIT, IT'S OUT?" Got it in the Summer of 2005. Burned a bunch of CDs for my CD player (Remember them? Lmao) and went HARD. Remember listening to SlipKnot while playing it. Good times.

RE4 saved and killed Resident Evil simultaneously. Mikami being forced to replicate the success by Zenimax was pretty fucking bad but w/e.

Is there a YT link you can share from the episode? Never saw any of the later X files seasons so it's not something I am familiar with.
This is as much as I could find. You can hear a little bit of the music in this deleted scene from the episode but it is in the cold open of the episode where you hear the music clearly.

If you played this game on launch day,

Take your ibuprofen today. Your back ain't getting any younger
I‘m proud to say I‘m im far better shape now then I was back then. I was lazy as shit.

That said, I remember buying a US import + freeloader to play this game back then and it was worth every cent. Finished it 3 times before moving on to some other game.

The memory of my brother is also tied to this game. For some reason I remember him coming in one day after seeing me play it and saying he dreamt about this game. He ended up finishing it 20+ time probably. Much more than I did.

He passed away many years ago. Wasn’t always on good terms with him, especially in the end. Hope he’s rocking it with Leon though, wherever he is.

To add to this, Mikami felt like he had done all he could on PS1 and was looking to the next generation after RE2. I think change is inevitable when someone is looking ahead like that.
Exactly. You could tell he was trying some different stuff with Camera movements for Code Veronica but it was still more or less the same fixed angles.

Hell they went through at least 3 different versions of RE4 before we got thr final product. Gamers at the time were tired of the traditional RE, with stiff movements and awkward tanks controls but I guess a lot of things look different when wearing rose tinted nostalgia goggles...

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

It's the same deal why some people hold resident evil 1.5 in such high esteem, I've even read some crazy comments that what they've seen looked better than the actual final game we got.

When in reality, it was scrapped for a very valid reason. It felt very similar to the first one without an iconic location like the Spencer mansion.

Capcom management and Kamiya wouldn't just scrap the game for no reason.

I'm a big fan of classic RE, but you're not wrong. Times were changing and sales were down. The RE formula needed a change up for wider audiences.

I was still loving Outbreak at the time though, the swan song of classic RE that was ahead of its time.

The funny thing about the tank controls, and the genius of Mikami, is that RE4 is the tank controls we know and love/hate but with the perspective change and and addition of 3D aim. It's still RE at its core even if it looks completely different. 5 added side stepping but it was still incremental changes away from tank controls until black sheep giraffe 6 came along.

I think that's the novelty of the version that slipped away, just moreso than 3.5 because it was mostly finished. Plus you had the things cut for the final release, like the weapon walking animations and enemies plus other bits that seem downgraded in final.

But again, completely right. IIRC people that have played (semi-)completed builds do think it's cool but also get why it was scrapped. Both 2 and 4 were both worth the effort and the wait.

Kamiya himself said that the game was bad. RE 1.5 nostalgia is very strange…

Resident Evil 4 officially turns 20 years old. Originally released for the Gamecube on Jan 11th, 2005.

Arguably one of the best, most replayable, games of all time. More importantly, the lifeline Capcom needed to keep the Resident Evil franchise alive after multiple lackluster entries and the general classic RE formula getting stale by the mid 2000's. For me, RE4 will pretty much always have a permanent top spot in my 'best of all time' lists. Excellent, tense, survival/action game play, some of the best presentation at the time of release and so fun that it's still one of my most replayed games.

Let's all share our memories of this classic.

I wasn't a fan of this game when it first launched. I didn't like how the series ditched traditional zombies, how the shooting controls were outdated and how it turned more towards action. I think I've finished it for the first time on PC and there was an additional problem with it being pretty much unplayable using kb+m combo.

Since then my opinion of the game has improved and I enjoyed RE4R, but I still very much prefer RE2 for the zombies and Raccoon City or even RE7 for the very good horror atmosphere.
