1up: The 50 most influential games of all time

What did Metal Gear Solid influence? I mean, i guess it had some effects on storytelling.. but even there? It's a quality game, I liked it, but one of the most influential game?..

Yeah why put MGS in there? It would have been better to put the original Metal Gear.

Oh and GT shouldn't be on there.

Speaking of missing the point.

I sure hope you're not Alan Dang because if you are I'm going to smack you around extra hard when I get back.

IT IS A CHRONOLOGICAL LISTING.

IT IS NOT A RANKING.

WHY DO YOU PEOPLE HAVE TO MAKE THE GODDAMN STUPIDEST POSTS EVERY SECOND OF EVERY GODDAMN DAY?

Umm you might want to look at the list again it is definately not in chronological order.

From 1up's intro page:

"We're working in a roughly chronological order rather than according to any sort of ranking."

"After JGR hit stores, games like Cel Damage and Wacky Races co-opted the style as their own"

The article is mistaken. Wacky Races came out five months before JGR. Maybe they were "inspired" by the screenshots that Sega released. :D

Sometimes, I really really like this forum.

And then sometimes... like when I read this thread... I weep for humanity.

READ BEFORE YOU POST GODDAMIT.

Excellent work 1up/Toastyfrog btw.

I read the thread( a list of the 50 most essental games of all time) and the title(1up: The 50 most influential games of all time)...ET is infamous definatly but how is it influential? How does a gmae being ass horrible make it essential? If thats the case where Superman 64?

I bet if you read the ARTICLE about ET you might have an idea why it's essential.

First of all, let me repeat it once again for the hopeful "third time's the charm" effect:

Read the article.

Second, it never said essential anywhere (at least not in the title of the thread or the title of the feature), it says influential. And without even reading the article (I'll get to it, I'm still on #7 meself, and I'm going in order), how about the fact that E.T. is widely regarded as the final nail in the coffin for Atari's dominance, and the death knell for the games industry in the U.S. at the time?

You know, I was really hoping for some interesting discussion about the inclusion of certain games. Maybe I'll try and start one tomorrow after work, since I need my requisite 4 hours of sleep at the moment. With any luck, it'll happen by then anyways. o_O

Edit: I stand corrected on the essential bit. See GXAlan's post below

Off Topic: How many here have 1up.com profiles and/or clubs?

On Topic: I don't see what is wrong with the list. It's pretty nice.

This is proof of the importance of copy and layout. The content is solid, but A LOT of us are making the same mistake.

Look at the graphical banner at the top. The right text: "The Essential 50: The most influential games of all time."

And then, tucked away in dark gray text on light gray at the end of a somewhat wordy introduction is it pointed out that it's roughly chronological order...

This list would have been far more relevant had they put them in order instead of chronologicaly order, for all the work they did i'm surprised they didn't. Should have been titled rank what we think are the 50 most essential games of all time lol.

I think a lot of games are underestimated there.

Pokemon, GT, Ocarina of Time, Mortal Kombat Tetris...

and then many are overestimated...

Donkey Kong, Dragon Warrior, Tony Hawk, Parappa the Rapper

Are you kidding me? Donkey Kong is one of the greatest games ever made. Even as an adult I can sit down and play that game for hours on end. Parappa the Rapper is one of the most inovative games of its time. Dragon Warrior was one of the best RPG's ever. I really can't see how you think they are overestimated.

BTW....Drunk. So I really have no idea what you mean by overestimated, but from what I understand you mean that they are placed to highly or placed at all on the list. If I'm wrong in this assumption please disregard this post.

This is an old article, several months old. However, I thought it was very well written. Upon actually reading it, though, you'll realize that most of these games belong on the list.

Some of the replies in this thread are juvenile. Before replying to something, try actually clicking on the link and reading the source. You'll save yourself some embarassment.

The list is good, but I find two problems.

No SSI Gold Box series? Pool of Radiance is one of the most influential games of all time, imo. But, it didn't truely innovate anything. SSI sort of took several ideas and fused them into one awesome set of games. So maybe that is the knock on that series.

Second, the original John Madden's Football was a horribly broken game. A game released before it (or at the same time), Joe Montana's Football (by Sega) was 10 times its equal. It wasn't until EA released John Madden's '92 that the series became something to talk about. Ironically, Madden 92 co-opted alot of the playstyle/feel that Montana's had. But, the winner (EA) writes the history I suppose. Sega never capitalized on thier initial success of Montana's Football, and EA took the reigns.

Meh i was hoping for Fallout!

Just for the infinity engine!

Fallout 2 -> Baldur's Gate -> Planescape -> IWD -> Baldur's Gate 2 -> IWD 2

Best RPG engine ever!

+1 coz i am a bioware fanboy!

It's a good list anyways!

How come they can't put Quake there? It almost single handedly started the 3d hardware acceleration revolution.

edit: the original elite isn't there as well :(

A solid list overall. Very solid up to about #38, I thought. Still missing a bunch of stuff I'd consider important, but then again that's my opinion. Of course, that's the problem with these stupid lists; they never succeed completely, because one man's art is another's garbage. Literally, in the case of ET.

I gotta agree that if most people immediately interpret your layout incorrectly, then there is something wrong with your layout.
