1up: The 50 most influential games of all time

I gotta agree that if most people immediately interpret your layout incorrectly, then there is something wrong with your layout.

I don't think people are having problem understanding the layout so much as the intent. This isn't a ranking list, and it's not a pissing contest to determine which game was the "most important ever." The goal with this has been to paint a rough picture of the medium's evolution by looking at its landmark titles and the connections between those games, nothing more.

If anything, I think the confusion shows how accustomed people have become to the bad habits of the gaming press. They're so inundated with "best of" and "top ten" fluff pieces that they see a series of numbers and automatically assume it involves rankings. If the biggest failing with this series is that it's not just more of the same old crap, then thank god for failure.

The only ranking on the list was a loosely chronological one. The actual articles that go with each entry are more than worth the price of admission. Props toasty.

Though y'know considering the current climate of game journalism a huge IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER has to be added to the top of the listing wherever and whenever it's posted.

Even without a huge heading, I thought it was blatantly obvious that the list was in chronological order. Not only does it have the years listed but you can easily tell the old games are on top while the newer games are listed on the bottom

can someone explain to me how Herzog Zwei influenced the industry? Other than being an underrated game for its time, it didn't cause an explosion in strategy or war simulation games.

Some games influenced the industry, others influenced the craft of game design.

Herzog Zwei did neither, unless you can prove that there are games out there that came after it that used mechanics that were introduced in Herzog Zwei.

The article is mistaken. Wacky Races came out five months before JGR. Maybe they were "inspired" by the screenshots that Sega released. :D
Wacky Races was started after JSR and was completed before JSR was finished. They tried to BS their way out of it, but yeah they nicked the method from JSR.

Have you read the article? It claims that Herzog Zwei started the RTS genre.

Quake 1 should be on the list. Online gaming and tournaments might have started with Dwango and Doom, and Duke Nukem might have had a short run on TEN, but Quake made it mainstream. Either Ultima Online or Everquest (moreso the latter) should be on the list. Starcraft should be on the list (it made RTS games mainstream, turned it into something everyone tried to cash in on, it also made intercountry gaming a reality). Goldeneye made FPS games a mainstream phenomenon and was the precursor to the Halo craze. Why isn't the original Zelda on the list? First game to use battery backup? How can Dragon Warrior (which honestly didn't do much had Nintendo Power not literally give it away) make this list based on its own merits? Why isn't Track and Field on this list? Ok maybe I am getting carried away....

Tomb Raider should not be on this list IMHO. Big breasts = not very influential imho. Sexual themes in video games were already coming up, Lara Croft neither shocked anyone nor did she do it in a way that influenced anyone else. The industry certainly didn't follow her lead with female leads in other games. There was no paradigm shift when Tomb Raider appeared other than the spawn of crappy and innumerable sequels. I think Sony quality control had more to do with that than Eidos cashing in.

It doesn't really seem like too much thought was put into this list. It seems more like a bunch of guys sitting around thinking, "How can we come up with an article that'll span a bunch of pages and get us some hits?" "I know, let's name random games that we thought might have done something or another, that is sure to be good!" "Yeah ok! Great"

Pretty terrible list overall. But then again, it's just a few peoples' opinions. They are entitled to publish what they think.

I agree with Quake as well. I started playing multiplayer games with those services you mentioned, Dwango and The Total Entertainment Network, but Quake made it a lot easier to play online with TCP/IP support. Not to mention it was the home of Team Fortress and basically created the Capture the Flag mode (although I'm sure CTF has been in previous games...only game I can think of is Rise of the Triad). I think it also made "Clans" mainstream as well

It also had Rocket Arena, which was like the first time the '1 death, you're eliminated for the round' idea was incorporated. Now you have that set up in games like Counterstrike and such

Too lazy to read the articles?

No, no, he's totally right. This is just a cynical ploy to score tons of page clicks from 12-year-olds desperate to learn more about Rogue and M.U.L.E. We stumbled upon the secret that IGN only wishes they had discovered: what Halo 2 players really want from a game site is a personal essay on how much Dani Bunten rocked.

No Defender, Robotron, Dune 2...

and No GOLDENEYE!!!! OK, that pretty much shows the intelligence of this list.

well if you added macintosh, why didn't you add PC? or Gameboy?

exactly what the fuck? Why didn't you atleast call it Apple II?

This list is alot better than the one IGN did 1 or 2 years ago. What a crop of shit that was. FFX :lol

"Why don't you suck my tiny yellow book?"
:lol I just turned my head to see if it was really yellow

All that it's missing is some japanese kanji character on the mushroom, possibly the one for 'love' :lol

"spacewarz #1 wtf!!! teh sux"

kidding...this junior member can read. nice list overall. wonder what #50 will be. ico? halo? metroid prime?

if i had to guess, i'd say xbox live has been pretty influential though it's technically not a game...not that that's kept some other things from being on the list.

After looking at the list, the only one that I believe doesn't really need to be on there is Jet Set Radio. I guess it brought about a new genre of sorts, and it had cell-shaded graphics, but that doesn't make it revolutionary or really that special. A new graphics technique that really hasn't caught on that much isn't a big deal. Yeah, cel-shading is around, but it's not THAT popular. Is the first game to use voxels on that list? Is it?! HUH?! Actually, it might be, cause I'm not really sure what that game would be (only know of the Delta Force series using it) anyways, and I'm pretty sure none of those games are, sooo.. :)

And yeah, GoldenEye should be thrown on there because it showed that the consoles can have some kick-@$$ first person shooters of their own. :D

I like this feature. Reading them all in order, while time consuming, provides a nice look at the evolution of gaming.

My guess for #50 is Devil May Cry. It has had a huge impact on 3D action games in the last few years.
