1up Yours (11/28) - Black Friday Edition

Epic podcast, I loved all the Christmas stories at the end. Well done everyone who contributed.

As for games, Garnett has almost sold me on Tomb Raider Underworld. I don't care if the combat hasn't evolved too much from Legend, the fact that he enjoys just exploring the levels fills me with confidence that I will enjoy the game as well. The only worry I have is this impending DLC. I'm a fan but I too can't condone that type of "pay for the real ending" attitude. I hope it all turns out to be less evil than it seems.

Oh my god can we nip this fucking Killzone 2 talk in the bud already?

The shit doesn't come out for 3 months so who gives a fuck?

Thread hasn't even been up long enough to listen to the entire episode and Hoffman's fucking PS3 loving ass is talking about Killzone 2 already?

FUCK

Hey look who it is, again

I love how Shane called him out on the "not worth playing" comment.

Anyway, glad that he backpedals a bit. Says he's not really into 'tactical' shooters and prefers 'arcadey' shooters. I guess that's understandable, but I think KZ2 has a nice mix of arcadey style and tactical play. The class system allows you to really play however you want. Hope he gets a bit more time to play the other classes.

So would you say it plays more like Rainbow Six Vegas or Halo 3?

Plays like CoD4 on crack with TF2-esque classes and 32 players with squads.

In other words, it's amazing.

Doesn't really play anything like Halo 3, which is more about weapon dynamics / power weapon control.

I liked the Christmas stories, but I would have expected something like this in the show immediately before Christmas. It's fine with me either way.

Hang on, 15 minutes, then it's uploaded to zshare, the preferred podcast pirating site on NeoGAF.

What a great episode. Loved all the Christmas stories.

And I gotta agree with Shane that the 24 movie was average at best. there was one good action sequence but there's still too much Washington political BS. More than anything else, the movie made it painfully clear that 24 really needs the weekly cliffhanger to be interesting. When it ends and there's no ticking time bomb waiting for resolution next week, the show loses a lot of its impact.

I still have some hope that the new season will be better than 6, though. Couldn't get much worse.

Looking forward to some XNA discussion next week. There's some great stuff on there.

Great show so far. Only halfway through though.

Well, them bringing Tony back could be really good, or it could be an act of desperation. I'd like to think that after having 2 years off that that they can put together a compelling season. I hate to see everyone jumping on the hating 24 bandwagon like they are on the "hate Heroes" bandwagon. But yeah, I'm finding it hard to like Heroes these days. I just don't care that much anymore if I miss an episode enough to go watch it on Hulu. Sons of Anarchy on the other hand, best show I've seen since The Sopranos first came out.

Good episode so far, got about 30 minutes to go. Weird that David Ellis is backtracking so much this week about Killzone 2 after last week's episode. Granted, everyone has opinions, but it seems like he'd only played it for a couple rounds after changing his mind so much this week. And yeah, it sounds like he prefers the arcadey shooters more than tactical shooters, which is fine, but that caveat would have probably made the responses here and elsewhere much better than ragging on it the whole time. His opinions just seemed so different from the rest of the gaming media and the impressions here on GAF. Regardless, glad to see he's warming up to it some. Seeing how the different classes work means that I'm probably going to be addicted to it when it's released. Class based shooters like TF2 and Resistance 2 co-op have my heart right now. :D

Does xbl Peggle have local co-op?

edit: if you're interested in documentaries on Netflix, check out Overnight, a doc about the writer/director of Boondock Saints. The guy is a massive asshole and the movie is great.

lost: 'best tv show of the last 15 years'

he did say "network" TV, implying only ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX.

it's a bold statement, but I would have a hard time thinking of another awesome 1 hr network show off the top of my head.

whereas, with cable you got The Wire, Sopranos, Shield, etc.

I've listed to this podcast and the comments of note:

a) Tombraider suckage

is anyone really surprised?

b) LBP bombage

Its not an uber hit but shane is right on the money.

Well, we all know what the best network show on TV ever is....only 6 episodes but would have went down as the best network show of all time with a full run.

EYES!

J/K would have been Jericho with a full run. :(

:lol

Shane LBP Defense Force so awesome, love the game. Goddamn there's 2 peopel at my office, god. I gotta buy something during lunch time...

Buy your Peggle games for the PC on Steam.

Peggle Deluxe and Peggle Nights are $9.99 on the service. Not sure why, since they sell them for $19.99 at popcaps website but I'm not going to complain! I like Steam better anyway.

If you only game on 360, you owe it to yourself to at least try out the trial. Best casual game ever made, so addictive. I'll probably buy it again. :lol

Shane, i think you're the only reason to listen to the show, but Lost? Really?

Have you people never seen the shield?

Of course The Shield and The Wire are infinitely better. However, Shane hasn't watched those shows. Remember, Shane's a self-professed Stylista and The Hills TV fan. His taste in television is questionable at best (like most who consider a 40 minute tree frog hunt good TV)

Will listen to this ep now. Nice surprise. LOL @ Killzone 2 damage control again. Enjoy your game and shut the fuck up already. If the game speaks for itself and truly is great, you wouldn't have to be spewing your viral marketing speeches all over these threads each week, Hoffman.

How does Garnett enjoy the COD:W@W maps? They're the reason why I don't play the game as much as I would like ;(

Way too open-ended. They belong in a Battlefield game.

Agreed. The maps in CoD:WaW are fucking atricious. The maps in 60 player Resistance 2 are smaller..

On Tomb Raider: Garnett is right about nonlinearity and openness. They've gone back to the Tomb Raider 1 type deal where you are in a big open environment where you're not totally sure what to do and you just have to explore. And the story is fun and entertaining! Do people think Tomb Raider has always been like very grounded and serious? They are mixing the story of the original games with the games after the reboot...

I don't understand why people talk about the "Call of Duty 4 engine" when they talk about games. It's just an engine. It doesn't make a game play a certain way. People should just say "Call of Duty 4" style gameplay. :\

I scrolled to the bottom because of the 24 spoilers. Could you guys spoiler tag those, I havent had a chance to watch 24: Redemption yet!

Yeah, there's a definite distinction between network and cable shows. Lumping both categories together doesn't do any good.

And when it comes to network shows, LOST is definitely one of the best in the past couple decades.

I still don't get the Uncharted - Tomb Raider cmparisons here. Uncharted had lame platforming, great shooting and the exact opposite is true for Tomb Raider. Both developers realized the strong suits of the games and built them around it. I think that should be a clear sign right there that they aren't trying to be the same thing at all and why people only look at aethetics and judge is so confusing.

It does a disservice to both games to make the straight comparison IMO. I can understand wanting better platforming in Uncharted and better shooting in Tomb Raider, but comparing them as if they were the same game is going to result in some kind of homogenizing of the two into the same game. :\
