1up Yours (11/28) - Black Friday Edition

Let me try this again. Shawn, I can't believe that you think BSG is better than Lost. I haven't watched BSG at all. If you can properly explain why BSG is better than Lost I'll probably start watching the show. You guys got me into The Walking Dead and The Wire so your recommendation can't be that bad.

I just finished the Shield and I think that may be one of the best final seasons of any show I have seen in a long time. Pretty much every person had the perfect ending.

I would agree with this statement if it wasn't totally wrong.

Jack Bauer is a Real American Hero and we all owe it to him to watch his exploits.

I guess it's good if you're expecting MacGuyver.

Everyone knows the best network tv show of the last 15 years is The X-Files. :D

I really liked the first two seasons of BSG, but the show lost me during the third season. I just couldn't get into it anymore. I'll have to give it another try after I'm done with some other shows.

24 was in the "so bad its good" category for me. I watched it because it was a fun mindless hour of explosions and shootouts and I wanted to see how far the plot would go. I haven't watched it since the season with Marwan and his backup plans upon backup plans because it was getting ridiculous even for 24 standards.

Lost is great and BSG is great but I enjoy watching BSG more because it's more relevant and better-produced. Sometimes it smacks you in the face with the "issue of the week"(abortion, religion) but it's able to discuss those issues in the context of pew pew space lasers and robots without being silly. S1 of Lost had some great character stories, but 2 and 3 took a dive as they began to blow their plot-wads every week and the characters took a back seat. They reeled it in a bit in S4, which I enjoyed, but they've run out of character stories and are focused solely on the plot now.

I'm serious dude. The feet come out.

I'm not doubting that. Stop trying to change the subject with stupid videos.

Do you really think BSG is better than Lost. Are you just saying that to grief people?

When is BSG supposed to end? I know it's supposed to be soon, but I don't know the date. I'm waiting until the show is over before I start watching it. Also, 24 has most certainly jumped the shark. It was cool at first, but now it's just ass. Entourage on the other hand is fantastic.

Because I need someone to mock up Alessi's ideal EGM preview page for a recent game. Like pages of BioShock weapons and a giant pic of the boss with a caption that says "Boss"

What are you talking about. I'm sure if you asked him, Alessi would mock up plenty of preview pages for you. Because if he does it right you guys will ask him to join the team and everything. Then he can mock up all your crazy fantasies whenever you want. It makes perfect sense. win/win.

24: Redemption kind of had a moment like that

the scarf had a caption that said "future plot device"

Just check out the mini-series/pilot and the first episode of season one and then decide if you want to keep watching it.

I love Lost but BSG blows it away in my book.

I've got to give a pitch for en entrepreneurship course tomorrow night.

It's occurred to me that I somehow need to involve the homeless and lots of cursing.

If anyone has a trust fund, hook me up. I want to make a documentary about Alessi a la American Movie.

I'll be at BU tomorrow night talking to some angel investors, bring the video and your idea...sounds like a cash cow.

BSG Season 1 and 2 are much better than Lost. I don't get why this is so unbelievable. It's just a better show.

Season 4 Battlestar though is absolute garbage that isn't worth watching. Season 3 is mostly terrible as well, with some good episodes, like the couple at the beginning of the season.

So my list of shows to watch is:

Wire
Shield
BSG

In that order?

If you're not already watching it, I highly recommend Mad Men. I'd also suggest checking out It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, but surely you're already enjoying the funniest show on television.

My mom watches Mad Men and raves about it, but I haven't seen it. I don't watch a ton of TV...I think I'll wait till I can grab a few seasons of MM on DVD.

Also, Always Sunny was best in season 1. :D

uh oh dramaaa

The Shield, Lost and Dexter are my favorite shows.
Happy Birthday Shane, you are the main reason I listen to 1UP Yours.
Hope you get a job with Sony when EGM goes under

Best shows on TV right now are Damages, Breaking Bad, and Mad Men. Sadly none of them return until next year.

Why would they pay him for what he already does for free? :lol

I really need to get back into watching TV shows. The only things I follow are bad to decent shows I invested time in so I keep up with them. for like 2 years now people have been telling me to watch the Wire, but I never got around to it.

I was just coming back into this thread to mention that serial, I honest to god cannot big The Shield up enough, I rate it over any other TV serial tbh, even over BSG/Lost etc, and I even surprise myself saying that becuase I never could understand what all the fuss was about what looked like an average American cop serial/drama, how could that be better than BSG ?, I dismissed it until it was well into season 5, but one day I was bored out of my face, I pretty much had exhausted everything else on TV, all my fav TV shows had either finished or where between seasons, so anyway I plonked down the first season of The Shield and fell in love, I'd say it took me about 4 episodes to start really drawing me in, what I love about it is the character plots, fucking amazing, it's not often I get very emotionally involved in TV these days but this had me on a roller coaster of emotions, anger, frustration, compassion, sadness, Grief, delight, your go through them all, watch it dude, WATCH IT NOW.

Eyyy whoa. I think whether or not one is better than the other is a bit subjective (I quite like both), but Lost is kind of the best produced show on television. The cinematography, sets, sound, music, etc. All pretty much the best around.

BSG is better than Lost. The Wire is better than Lost. The Shield is better than all of them.

And The Shield and The Wire are very different "cop" shows. The Wire is a realistic look at institutions and the workings of a major American city. The Shield is a Shakespearean melodrama (in the best sense of the word) with some of the best writing and acting in any television series to date. The first season or so may not seem like something special but I promise you, if you stick with it you'll be rewarded.

Produced probably wasn't the word to use. You're right, Lost definitely has BSG beat on sets & cinematography for obvious reasons but I think BSG has it beat on music. I guess I meant to say that I thought BSG was overall the better package deal; better story, better characters, more consistent writing, better atmosphere. To me, anyway.

Based on what I've heard of your opinions, The Shield might be a bit too over the top for you to be able to take is seriously, especially after The Wire. It'll no doubt grow on you though if you stick with it. Or I could be way off base here to begin with.

I've watched every episode of both The Shield and The Wire, and I think they're each incredible shows for different reasons. Certain seasons of The Shield, especially the one featuring Forest Whitaker, are easily up there with the best of The Wire, and its series finale from last Tuesday was a perfect, satisfying ending. The Wire tells its story better, but for raw suspense and intensity, simply nothing beats The Shield.

7 (shorter-length) seasons of excellent TV just waiting there for you to watch - I envy you :D though I still haven't watched BSG yet so I guess the same holds true for me.

Actually, Shane's going to get a job with Microsoft, where he'll be forced to do 10 page reviews of all Sony exclusive titles (single spaced, of course). He'll have to ditch his trendy urban clothing for a suit and tie, and will have to email someone before even thinking about adjusting the thermostat.

And then, one night, he'll be slogging away on the review for God of War III and he'll inadvertently click on a link to the GiantBomb podcast while surfing GAF. He'll listen for a bit, think of the good ole days and how much everything sucks now, and then open up the drawer where his miniature replica FF Cloud's sword/letter opener sits. He'll look at it, hold it in his hands a bit, then place it in his jacket pocket and walk out the door...

does that mean TFrog is going to end up in witness protection?

But Far Cry 2 is a genuinely bad game and should be called out for it.

Even more so because it was on the cusp of greatness yet manages to consistently fuck up in a manner so transparent that it frustrates the hell out of me.
