1up Yours- October 26, 2007

Bill Roper was a great guest and Hellgate sounds like a cool game. That being said, the show had some interesting talk about a mostly uninteresting topic (MMOs). I fell asleep last night listening to it towards the end of the 2nd segment. My wife woke me up to have me come to bed. Even though the conversation was interesting, I had a hard time staying awake. :\

Maybe I was just tired. I love the long podcasts. Anything around 2 hours and some minutes is about the perfect length for me.

Third segment was great and I got to listen to that this morning. :) Bill Roper's band's music was a nice change of pace.

I knew I had heard it somewhere and it wasn't just some random new iTunes music. :lol

Of all the things to slam about WoW, I can't believe Milky went for the art direction.

If I was to play an MMO for hundreds of hours, I would like a reward that is interesting to me. In this case, the rewards reaped from the grind of WoW sucks in his opinion, therefor he'd never waste his time to get them.

I thought the 1up crew let Bill Roper off pretty easy on the whole fee structure of Hellgate. Let's face it, Hellgate is not a full-scale MMO like WoW or Everquest, and is more comparable to Guild Wars. Now, Guild Wars is completely free to play (after you bought the game), and has regular free content updates (just this weekend it has a special Halloween event, with new PvP modes, etc). With the usual 1up rants about microtransactions, and Xbox Live that should be free, I had expected more questions about this...

I can't believe people actually have a problem with WC's art design. That series seriously has some of the best in the biz.

Good podcast.

I agree with Roper in that the 360 needs a new RTS specific control if you want a decently controlled RTS on the system. I tried to like C&C 360, I really did. But using a gamepad is full of fail compared to using the keyboard and mouse. There is just too much going on to cram everything onto two analog sticks and 8 buttons. Not only is movement more jerky, but it is a cluster to manage your resources and troops with the limited number of buttons available.

Need something similar to the wiimote with more buttons on it for hot keying items and objects onscreen. Or give me mouse and keyboard support on 360, that would solve the problem right there. Yeah yeah competitive play online whatever. Start filtering that shizz MS and let me CHOOSE what setup I want to play the game with. Stop with the illusion of choice and give me it for REALZ.

I wouldn't mind seeing supreme commander on 360, but with the current controller the game will not flow properly.

Eh, it's not high profile enough really. And not on consoles. Metal Gear Online? Time to open the can buddy!

They don't want to throw too many fastballs at him, or else they'll scare him and future guests off.

I think we can all agree, though, that Mister Roper needs to be prevented from "riffing" or telling jokes in public areas in the future.

Edit: That was the, um, royal "we?"

Yeah the dude was intelligent and passionate and thats super refreshing to listen to.

Again, I've already said in this topic that I love the guy's work. I just thought that he was, um, clearly stunted in his social development.

Speaking of the "sound drops", I'd have to disagree with it all being awful. My favourite comedic radio show is Australia's "Get This", which is some of the funniest stuff I've ever heard, and the crew on that show do sound drops so well. Not stupid sound effects with no meaning, but actual skits based around, say, the electrocution of the Prime Minister, or a famous fishermans address to the nation!

A LOT of radio IS awful and is just filled with idiots acting like idiots, but you find some gems out there.

Why did Garnett's yelling get out of control BTW this time? IIRC he said he was sober...

Same shit every week.

"So-and-so-is-a-good-idea. OH WAIT, NO...IT'S NOT! *sqeaky voice*WTF is this shit!?! WHAT-THE-FUCK?!? WHAT-THE....FUCK?!?"

Right? You know Right? Right? We work with EA Right? Right? Right? On hellgate Right? Which is an RPG Right? Right?

Interesting conversation with Roeper, but they really dropped the ball on it, Shane especially.

Last 1upyours they talked at length about Too Human and how it was not like DMC or NG, but a Diablo 2 or PSO like grinding-loot game. When the conversation turned to a console port or when they talked about PSO I was waiting for them to contrast Too Human with Hellgate, but nothing, no mention, not even from Shane who went to visit SK.

I only listened to it today. While Tieno is right that they had some ripe comparisons to last week that they didn't follow up on, overall, I think that things are definitely moving in the right direction on 1Up Yours. The shouting and shittiness of a month ago is gone [for now].

Glad to have rational conversation back. Now let's make sure that it stays this time.
