Is Bioshock really about emergent gameplay? Bioshock for me was more about well-utilized set pieces, every turret, oil slick, puddle of water and security camera is basically a set piece for the player.
I get the feeling most people didn't really touch the surface with what is possible in Bioshock and, as such, lauge when they hear it referred to in connection with emergent gameplay. For example, I would bet a large majority of the players never...
(1) Hacked a sentry bot, shot it with a proximity mine, and security tagged a target, creating a bot that will kamikazee its foe rather than shooting at it.
(2)Played through the game Metal Gear style as soon as it was possible. (i.e. don't allow yourself to hack anything or be seen by anything- other than the scripted encounters- and exploit the camo tonic to the fullest)
(3)Ran a wrench only playthrough, building you character with tonics specifically for the wrench. (You actually get absurdly powerful by the end)
(4)Froze a guy in midair, threw a cyclone below him, and then trip wired the area above him to create a visually spectacular juggling death just for the heck of it.
Those are only a few things I used to do for fun in it. There are many cool things that can emerge from the gameplay in Bioshock; it's just that the game itself (and this is, perhaps, one of its few flaws) never actually requires you to do this stuff. You have to seek it out yourself.
