20 Years LttP: Twin Peaks

Just watched the series finale. WTF WAS THAT SHIT? Total piece of shit garbage. I might in fact hate this show now. Not one bad episode and then they save it for the finale...don't resolve anything...leave every storyline open-ended...complete destruction of every character...WTF!!! Greatest rickroll of all-time. If you are thinking of watching this show, don't! I never wanna see another BSG or LOST finale criticism again....they're masterpieces to the shit I just watched.

You must not be familiar with the circumstances around its cancellation.

With the resolution of Twin Peaks' main drawing point (Laura Palmer's murder) in the middle of the second season, and with subsequent story lines becoming more obscure and drawn out, public interest finally began to wane, and "Peaksmania" seemed over. This discontent, coupled with ABC changing its timeslot on a number of occasions, led to a huge drop in ratings after being one of the most-watched television programs in the United States in 1990. A week after the season's 15th episode placed 85th in the ratings out of 89 shows, ABC put Twin Peaks on indefinite hiatus, a move which usually leads to cancellation.

An organized letter-writing campaign, dubbed COOP (Citizens Opposed to the Offing of Peaks), started in an attempt to save the show from cancellation. The campaign was successful, and ABC agreed to air the remaining six episodes to finish the season. In the final episodes, Agent Cooper was given a love interest, Annie Blackburn (Heather Graham), to replace the intended story arc with Audrey Horne. The series finale did not sufficiently boost interest, despite being written to end on a deliberate audience-baiting cliffhanger, and the show was not renewed for a third season, leaving the new cliffhanger unresolved.

ha ha

The last two episodes are two of the most daring episodes in television history. Quite frankly, they're so progressive it makes other television shows look archaic even though they're airing now and Twin Peaks aired in the 90s.

I've grown to accept and love the forever unresolved finale.

In my mind, Alan Wake's American Nightmare could essentially be a storyline that Twin Peaks could have taken. An evil copy of the main character (Alan in the game, Cooper in the show) is out running free while the "real" version is trapped in some dark alternate reality.

This is what I was thinking as well, except both of them would exist in our reality.

Doing a Netflix rewatch right now. OMG. I cannot stop my smiles and grins. This truly is one of the best shows, especially for it's time.

And then season 2 happened. I still love the show with all my heart, but man, Lynch not being there really kills it. The series finale makes up for it though.

Season 2 till the reveal is really good. It has a bad stretch and then an excellent 4-5 episode till the finale. As a whole season 2 is fine.

There's something about this show that makes you love it. There's this feeling of mystery and mysticism behind the show's mythology that makes it feel like an amazing work of art.

The story, however... is a disappintment. In that regard, it's a lot like LOST. It draws you in with this intoxicating aroma of uncertainty and then reality bites come resolution time. But it's definitely worth a watch.

The music is amazing... you initially ignore it and write it off as corny sentimental drivel, but eventually you realize it was meant to seem that way, and underneath you'll find Badalamenti's hidden genious, incarcerated within a soap-referencing theme... and yet slowly but surely creeping it's way into your head. Amazing stuff.

Netflix Canada finally got it about a month ago and I dove right in (been wanting to see this for years). Amazing, amazing show, and count me as one of the people that loves Fire Walk With Me.

Try the original. Quite impossible to dislike.
No, it isn't. It went on way too long and the ending was stupid and nonsensical. The second season was better (because it didn't take as long to get to the point), but was still riddled with plot holes.

Oh, and I love Twin Peaks. Well, except for that few middle episodes in the second season, but I can forgive them for hiring sub-par writers.

I demand Twin Peaks gold set blu-rays.

I just keep forgetting to. Every time I'm reminded of Fire Walk with Me, I tell myself I'll watch it tomorrow, but that day never comes. :p

JaseC, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it, just let it happen.

I'm not saying it's a perfect masterpiece of television, but it certainly is more polished than AMC's version and is something everyone can enjoy, for the most part.

Oh well, at least we both like Patton. ^^

Also, since you seem to know the show well enough, are you Danish? 'Cause I have a question for you if you are.

Figured this thread could use a healthy bump. Began my rewatch earlier this week, James, Super Nadine, and Dick have all gotten on my nerves already.

I originally watched Twin Peaks for the first time this past summer when it went up on Netflix. This is my second viewing and I've still yet to see Fire Walk With Me so add me to the list. I move we rectify this at some point in the month of February. Obtain it and watch it. Make it happen.

Oh and Audrey...got damn.

Dick is a hundred times better than the dumb deputy guy. He was never funny.

I never found Andy to be nearly as insufferable as Dick; unless of course you put the two together in a wacky sub-plot about who is the best baby-daddy.

I don't like either of them, but Andy offends me the least. Plus, he's surrounded by much better characters who seem to get more screen time.

Just watched episodes 11 and 12 of season two, and this show has got to have one of the biggest shark jumps of all time. The episode
that Leland Palmer dies, and they all ask each other whether Leland was just crazy or if Bob really existed
, could have and should have been the final episode. The show just falls off a cliff after that. None of the left over sub-plots are any good. Nadine thinking she's in high school, Dick and the deputy being big brothers, the plot about the two old guys, all those sub-plots are terrible. These last ten episodes are gonna be a chore to get through. Man, so good and then just a massive drop in quality, holy crap.

Oh it will be a chore, mid-season 2 is truly awful at times. It is worth slogging through though the last couple of episodes are great.

Man I need to watch this show again seeing as it's on Netflix, after watching the Deadly Premonition endurance run I swor I'd watch it again but I still havn't got around to it :(

Suffer through. You're right, but you want to see the end.

Yeah, I want to see the last couple of episodes, and I want to see how it ends, but it'll be a slog.

Started watching this a few days ago because of GAF acclaim. Just finished the first episode of season 2, and I think that's enough time to offer my opinion. I find myself enjoying the show's main plot arc, cinematography, and supernatural flair, but other elements of the show I find so aggravating that I am not sure I want to continue much further.

As far as my issues go, I hope somebody will tell me I'm not alone in feeling this way.

1. This show tries to be funny way too often, and I can't recall a single instance in which it succeeds. The opening scene of Season 2 with the senile old man who works at/runs the hotel consists of literally 4 minutes of him stammering at Dale Cooper. Andy is a character who seems to exist solely for the purpose of creating cheap laughs. He's easily the least intelligent character on the show despite working for the police department, and even is subjected to slapstick humor.

2. When the show isn't trying to be funny, its busy trying to establish some strange running gag that never amounts to any payoff. The viewer constantly sees Cooper recording messages for Diane, yet we don't have any idea for who she is. To string the viewer along without any sort of payoff is incredibly frustrating, not to mention very transparent as a means of monologue. Another gag of sorts is the fixation with coffee. Maybe it's meant to be funny and I'm humorless, but people talking about how great a particular cup of coffee is multiple times an episode is incredibly tedious.

3. I'm not usually one to criticize the logic of fictional characters, but some decisions made by the characters are undeniably moronic. Throwing stones at a bottle to decide which suspect to investigate, starting a relationship with your newly-dead best friend's boyfriend less than 24 hours after her murder, and the complete moral failings of every resident of Twin Peaks between
the affairs, prostitution, statutory rape, blackmail, domestic abuse, and murders.

Would you guys recommend continuing post-reveal? If there's isn't a new story arc, and the show just deals with the characters' interpersonal conflicts, I think I'll bail out then.

That's kind of the point. The seemingly quiet, nice little town with corruption and evil is a recurring theme in some of Lynch's works. The whole thing with the bottle is one of Cooper's quirks. Besides, it's established that he has some kind of connection with the supernatural.

Yep, Twin Peaks isn't for you.

That's kinda the point, IMO, to leave Diane as a mystery. Something's are better left for imagination. What would be accomplished if Diane was actually shown? Perhaps some curiosity might be satisfied, but what about after that? The role of Diane would most certainly be diminished.

There just isn't meant to be any pay off, and I think you're in for a disappointment if you wait one from Lynch.

Yep, I never finished season 2 because it got too unbearable to watch.

Oh yeah, Fire Walk with Me. I still haven't watched that yet. I forgot all about it.

Edit: That's right, I also imported Twin Peaks: The Video Game.

I still haven't watched FWwM and this thread is almost a year old. I am a disgrace. :(

Me too :(
I just keep putting it off.

Add me to the list. I watched the whole series on Netflix last year and LOVED it. Gotta get around to this.

Same here! We should all organise a time and watch it, would be interesting to see more than one persons first impressions seeing as how much it seems to split the fans.

Got the first season on DVD yesterday and I finally understand what's all this hoopla has been about. I'm only three episodes in and I'm completely sold. The atmosphere, setting, characters, mystery and all the small details just adds up straight from the pilot. Haven't been so excited of tv show in a long time.

That's the exact point that they lost me as well. It was so good until that point, and then goes straight to awful with no middle ground. Really disappointing.

At this point I'm thinking I should just wait until I watch the series again and then watch the film immediately after. :p

Let's set a date ladies and gents. Grinded rapidly to Episode 17(S2E10) and now I'll probably slow roll the rest of the second season. I'll definitely be picking up FWWM upon completion and watching it for the first time.
