If you dislike ambiguity or lack of resolution Twin Peaks is probably not the series for you.

My favorite video game ending is Final Fantasy VII (pre Advent Children) and my favorite tv show ending is from Evangelion. I'm fine with ambiguity as long as it's done right and not just because they were cancelled and couldn't end it how they wanted to.

Does Twin Peaks end properly? Without spoiling anything. I don't want to start watching it if it ends on a cliff hanger.
If you look at the show now, the ending works as a conclusion to the story, and the whole thing feels self contained. The ending is a cliffhanger, but at the same time not having a S3 doesn't ruin it.

I'm pretty sure David Lynch ended the series how he wanted to, given the circumstances under which the show was taken off air. I don't know that it's what you'll be looking for out of "proper" ending though. It's hard to really say anything more, because if you do watch it you should really keep in the dark about as much as possible.

I will say that Twin Peaks is more about the journey than the destination. If you decide not to watch it because of a preconceived notion about what an ending should or shouldn't be you're depriving yourself. It's easily one of the greatest shows ever. It boggles the mind that it was on network television at all.

Have you seen Lynch movies ? I'm thinking either Mullholland Drive, Lost Highway, Eraserhead, Blue Velvet or Inland Empire... not the other ones. It could probably help you decide : although TP is very different from those, it certainly could be felt as frustrating by some people, like other Lynch movies (I find them all terribly satisfying myself...).

Because the kind of planning and scripting you're thinking of, regardless of the cancellation (or even the "how they wanted" part) can hardly be reconciled with Lynch's way of doing things.

Anyway, it's fucking great just watch it : )

Just seen the thread, it is one of my favourite tv shows ever, if not my best. I always try to get people I know to watch it.

The thing with S2 is that Lynch never wanted
to reveal the killer
. The network basically forced it on the show.
Which I believe is a big reason why Lynch was so absent during S2.

As such, S2 often feels without purpose, a meandering mess. The actors are on record as saying they felt like Lynch abandoned them in S2, and I think it's evident that they were well aware that the quality of the show was dipping. Personally I'm convinced that Heather Graham's character is the writers' revenge on Lynch :p Look what it does to poor Coop!

That said, Lynch is really able to save the show in those last couple episodes. My god, the sheer tension in those is incredible.

This. This is what people need to remember when they're talking about the dip in quality in season 2. I found it both funny and frustrating that the really poor episodes actually had the audacity to use Laura Palmer's photograph with 'Falling' during the credits. I couldn't help but think this show has absolutely nothing to do with Laura Palmer anymore. Thankfully, Lynch returned and the show finished strong.

But still, as Lynch put it, the mystery behind Laura Palmer's murder was the goose that laid the golden eggs; and halfway through season 2 they were forced to kill that goose.

And that was a great tragedy, because the atmosphere and the feeling that Twin Peaks captured was really something special. I just wish we could see where Lynch and Frost would have taken us if they were allowed to take the show to where they really wanted. I've heard David Lynch say that he still likes to go to Twin Peaks in his head every now and then, and you can understand why.

Just three (well, 2.5) more episodes to go until my stay in Twin Peaks is over. :(

In a sense, it's a tad disingenuous to end that sentence with a sad face, as this has been one hell of an experience, even despite the dip in quality that comes with S02. It's sad that it's almost over, but I can always revisit and I surely will once the memory of the show begins to fade.

I'm looking forward to seeing how the show ends given the praise the final episode/s have received in this thread.

Edit: Herp derp I can't type.

Why did Lynch leave the show? Was it because of the demands the network were making?

Not entirely, no.

He became less involved partly due to the making of Wild at Heart, unfortunately. Which is frustrating because aside from one or two scenes it isn't a great movie. But he's often said that he finds television frustrating as a medium . Mainly due to the demands of network television and the fact that other writers and directors are pretty much necessary. There was also the issue of the show switching slots, from like a Wednesday night to a Saturday night or something. The show went from being watercooler talk to poor viewing figures. Also there were huge gaps during some episodes in season 2, no one knew when the show was going to be on or if it was ever going to be on again.

So it's not really as simple as Lynch left and the show dipped in quality and then he returned to save it. He did want to leave to make Wild at Heart. Also Lynch has said that some of the actors weren't 100% there, they didn't want to be completely saddled in a tv series.

OMG it's on Netflix streaming? Ha, I was about to cancel my Netflix for this month as I have some work to get done, but I probably won't now.

Gotta get my GF to watch this with me. It'll be my second run through. So good.

The wiki entry for Beyond Life and Death shows just how awesome Lynch is. He took the script and made a vastly superior product. In a perfect world we'd clone David Lynch and have him make TV.

That would be beautiful.

I love Mulholland Drive as a film but part of me wishes that it was the tv series it was originally intended to be. Even although it was probably right as a film.

2015
Cooper escapes the Black Lodge, believe.

Just finished season 1 Episode 4.

I'm really enjoying it so far. Love the direction of the show... the way it goes from a legitimate crime thriller to a soap opera to a comedy in matter of minutes is absolutely amazing. Kinda surprised network television would even pick up a show like this. You can tell it was wayyyy ahead of its time.

To me, so far, this is vintage Lynch. I haven't been able to get into some of the newer Lynch movies (Inland Empire and to some extent Mullholland Drive) but Twin Peaks so far has been all about what Lynch used to be.

He loves to reuse his actors. Instantly recognized the crazy woman from Inland Empire playing Laura's mother. The kid from Blue Velvet as Agent Cooper (what a great character, btw). The dynamic between Cooper and Harry is amazing.

Lara Flynn Boyle, wow she looks hot. Audrey might be the hottest one of the bunch though.

If all he did was announce a BD release, I could die a happy man.

Fun fact: Laura's mother and Donna's father play George Costanza's fiance's parents in Seinfeld.

Twin Peaks 20th Anniversary Merchandise

I meant to share this on gaf a while back but there aren't many TP threads. It's the first official Twin Peaks merchandise since it originally aired.

I picked up the Great Northern pen set (now sold out permanently apparently), a t-shirt and the Double R Diner coffee cup. Everything has been approved by David Lynch, and in some cases designed by the man himself. Worth a look.

So let's talk about our favorite characters.

Allow me to introduce you to, Ben Horne:

tpsp46.jpg

This Twin Peaks business magnate is one of the most affluent and powerful men in town. Owning several businesses in Twin Peaks (Great Northern Hotel, Horne's dept. store), as well as one across the border (One Eyed Jack's casino and brothel), he has a stranglehold on the town's economy. He is only challenged by the Packard Saw Mill that he is dying to get his hands on. Benjamin Horne is an intelligent, cunning man, willing to cross anyone to benefit his bottom line. Some of his hobbies include buying out his competitors, employing henchmen, seeing hookers at One Eyed Jack's and being a gourmet with his brother Jerry.

Despite his many character flaws, if you wish to call them that, Ben really loves his rebellious daughter Audrey, who is a source of constant disappointment to him, as she undermines his attempts to bring foreign business investors to Twin Peaks. Ben Horne employs trucker and drug peddler Leo Johnson to sabotage the Packard Saw Mill. Employing Leland Palmer as his private attorney, Ben Horne also had a connection with his late daughter, who he keeps a photograph of on his desk.

In Season 2, after being wrongfully incarcerated, Ben Horne goes through a psychotic episode, in which he role plays as a Civil War general fighting for the Confederacy. As his condition grows increasingly more severe, people close to him become concerned and employ the services of Dr. Jacoby, the town psychiatrist to help him snap out of it. After he is brought back to reality, Horne emerges as a seemingly changed man. He is now an environmentalist, trying to amend his former evil ways, and tries to reconnect with his daughter(s?)

With an obvious dark side and connections to the criminal world, could Ben Horne be the one that killed Laura Palmer?

Albert Rosenfield:

albert.jpg

FBI Forensics expert brought to Twin Peaks to help with the investigation of the murder of Laura Palmer.

Albert's path is a strange and difficult one.

While he admits to a certain cynicism, the fact is that Albert is a naysayer and hatchetman in the fight against violence. He prides himself in taking a punch and would gladly take another because he chooses to live his life in the company of Gandhi and King. His concerns are global. Albert Rosenfield rejects absolutely revenge, aggression and retaliation. The foundation of such a method...is love.

Audrey Horne

Ben's bored and eccentric daughter. In a show whose characters are mostly clearly good or evil, she bridges the gap between the dark underbelly of the town (One Eyed Jack's) and Agent Cooper's investigation. The citizens of Twin Peaks are weary of her, but her family also ignores her, so she's stuck in the middle of it all as a wild card in the plot. At first, it's not totally clear what her intentions are-- she initially seems to not take Laura's death seriously and even uses it to scare away the Norwegians. This is an interesting juxtaposition, as it simultaneously hurts her father (one of the main evil guys on the show) and dismisses Laura's death (the main motivation for the good guys on the show.) It shows that she's in a certain position of power, being Ben's daughter and, thus, a connection to all the evil shit that he does. Eventually, she uses that to help out with the investigation.

also, she's smoking hot.

this scene with him and Harry is one of my favorites. It's pretty iconic of the series: if it were any other show, Albert's "hard-boiled" attitude would embody his entire personality and he'd probably gladly get into a physical fight. But as with everything on the show, there's a hell of a lot more going on with him than what you see on the surface.

There are more. Sue Ellen Mischke, Mr. Pitt, Old Lady w/ marble rye that Jerry steals, and cable guy that Kramer has a chase with one episode are all in Twin Peaks.

I guess it's not that weird though because they were both on air at the same time.

I wish I had the money for the set photograph prints :(

I do own quite a few FWWM photos and cinema lobby cards though.

Edit: what the hell, 1 or 2 set photos wouldn't hurt.

Also, for anyone looking to buy the Double R Diner Coffee cup, it's smaller than you might think.

I just have to say, I love the soundtrack to this show. Quirky throwback music that manages to be quite ethereal. Just some of the tones that Angelo Badalamenti uses are amazing.

And that's that. What an amazing finale! The last 20 minutes or so are easily the most mind-warping minutes of television I've ever seen. I don't even want to imagine how the episode would have differed if it had lacked Lynch's touch. Suffice to say, the finale is a more than adequate reward for getting over the mid-season hump.

I'd love nothing more than to order a bunch of set photographs, but I really can't afford to at this moment. I hope there's at least one item left over in a couple of weeks.

For now, however, it is with a heavy heart that I bid farewell to Twin Peaks.

Haha, no, I started about a week ago. With most of the US TV shows I watch not having new episodes this past week, it wasn't too much of an effort.

This thread should be kept as the Twin Peaks OT, instead of LttP (Late to Twin Peaks?) threads popping up every now and then. I like this thread. Although, I have a feeling it will be around for a while anyway given that the show's just recently been put up on netflix.

I can't get this show out of my head. I already have this almost uncontrollable urge to watch the series again.

Edit: I still need to get my hands on Fire Walk with Me. I'll do that tomorrow later today. If that doesn't calm the urge, maybe I'll join the FBI. The 'C' does stand for Cooper, after all.

Bah! I can't believe I didn't think of that! It's almost insulting how obvious that pun now is.
