Damn... it's time to ask Jays fans: is Gustavo Chacin really *this* good? First game was a pleasant surprise, second win I felt like it was a nice streak for a young pitcher but when I saw his third start was against the Rangers in Ameriquest I figured he was due for a blow-out loss. 8 inning, 2 hit shutout tonight, and he'll go 3-0 unless some total disaster happens.

We can't say yet. He started off strong in ST, but really struggled. He's certainly a very good pitcher, but a two hitter against the Rangers? I can't say that'll happen every game. However, with Halladay pitching like it's 2003 again, Lily (despite last game) pitching very well, and Chacin/Bush/Towers all off to good starts, we've had the best starting pitching in the majors so far this season. Will any of it last? No one knows...But we certainly have the potential to continue pitching like this, and hopefully it will last.

So let's talk about the best unknown pitcher in the majors, Mark Buehrle.

He has 31 straight games pitching 6+ innings. Second in line is Randy Johnson with 19
He has 71 wins and he JUST turned 26.

Why don't more people know about him? Ridiculous.

also, the official game time for todays game was ONE HOUR AND THIRTY-NINE MINUTES.
That just amazes me for a baseball game.

5 Runs in the 3rd against Adam Eaton so far. Looks like he lost his magical spell he had over the Dodgers last season.

hey Detroit, how's Maggs working out for ya?

Ordonez (hernia) will likely have surgery next week and while the early timetable is 4-6 weeks he could be out longer than that, the Detroit Free Press reports.

"Best-case scenario is he'll be able to be back in four to six weeks," said president and general manager Dave Dombrowski. Dombrowski also acknowledged that it could be months before Ordonez plays again. Bobby Higginson started in right field on Friday night but Marcus Thames should see most of the playing time initially.

Any real baseball fan knows Mark Buerhle. Some even throw him in for free in fantasy trades.. :(

Solid 5 innings for Erickson and Great work by the bullpen to hold it. Erickson worked his way out of a couple jams to get the win. Im liking what I am seeing from our offense, doesnt seem all of out sync. :D

P.S Sucks for the Padres, they lost Khalil Greene again to a hand injury.

the 98 yankees got off to a slow start, the 05 red sox got off to a slow start...im not worried.

WHO THE FUCK AM I KIDDING THE YANKEES FUCKING SUCK

i wonder how bernie will respond when the yankees trade for griffey in july.

Bah, despite Kevin Brown sucking ass in the first it's tough to really enjoy the Yankees lousy opening couple of weeks simply because you know they'll be there in the end. :P Even us hardcore Yankee-haters realize deep down that they won't be 3 games under .500 for long so you can't get too excited.... yet. ;)

Why'd they keep Kevin Brown again? Right about now, I'd hate to be the wall that this whack job is clearly going to have to beat up to regain his manhood.

We can only hope. Willie Mo just hit a 498 foot three run homer. Kearns hasn't played very well in a couple years and Pena just keeps getting better. I'm to the point where I'd take Dunn/Pena and take what you can get for either Griffey or Kearns.

Ouch, gonna be a long day for the Jays bullpen today I think. :\

EDIT: ok, Reed Johnson HAS to stop propping his package up with his bat everytime he tightens his gloves at the plate. :lol

sooo with the loss eminent might as well make some revised numbers predictions...gotta have something positive.

Lane .290, 24 HR
Taveras .280, 28 SB
Berkman .300, 20 HR

Bagwell .270, 26 HR
Biggio .280, 45 2B, 18 HR
Everett .268,
Ensberg .275, 15 HR

Ausmus who cares... .245

Clemens 16-5 3.00 ERA
Oswalt 17-8 3.30 ERA
Pettitte 14-5 3.20 ERA
Backe 11-8 3.90 ERA
Astacio 9-6 3.60 ERA....I don't know

Lidge 3-2 1.50 ERA, 42 SV, 150 K

hopefully the offense will GET A NEW BATTING ORDER and a new life when Berkman comes back...88-74

The Astros pen sucks! Geez all they have is Lidge.

Qualls has only given up 2 runs in 7.2 innings.

The fucking lineup sucks. 9 hits 4 walks and at the end of the day, we still can't get shit. Doesn't help that we had our B-team in for most of the game and Biggio didn't stay in for Burke...

Considering Jiminez, Casey, Griffey, Kearns and Dunn haven't hit gotta be happy to be above .500. And the entire bullpen sucks too except for Wagner...I'm beginning to think every team sucks now that I think about it.

anyone pm me and show me how to use proxy servers to get around the blackout on mlbtv??? Please

Bullpen still sucks imo, they give runs back to quickly, hardly ever have 1-2-3 innings.Qualls is decent but geez do I long for the days of Dotel/Lidge/Wagner.

Our O is weak and it seems the only one tearing the cover off the ball right now is Lane.

Ugh.....Rocky start for Weaver again, but he wiggled his way out of trouble. Hopefully he can settle down as the game goes on.

:lol :lol just watched the Astros choke in the 9th

How is is choking when you have a leadoff double by Lane and a bunch of rookies and scrubs behind him trying to bring him home,if that were Berkman or Bags or someone of that quality I would consider it the typical htown choke of not getting the runner home...I chalk that inning as typical of Houston this year, lack of getting Lane to 3rd was what did them it,but its been like that a lot so far this season,Garner doesnt seem to want to sac players over, its like swing away rooks.

So the Orioles and the Nationals are 8-4 and are in first place in the AL and NL East, respectively. Did anyone see that coming?

I mean, I thought the Nationals would be competitive, but I was thinkg 5-7 right about now and I never thought I'd see the Yankees as cellar dwellers?

Toronto, Baltimore... it's y'all time to shine. New York is old and unstable. Boston is not the same team that won the pennant a year ago. Go forth my AL brethren.

I sent an e-mail to Tom Boswell about my opinion on the whole O's/Nats thing...

Mr. Boswell,
I appreciate that you will maintain your season ticket status at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. It's a good thing to do, but if you're wondering why so many people are jumping ship, why don't you read the same paper you write for?

I like the Orioles as a ballclub. I've invested years of my life in seeing some of their core players, like Brian Roberts and Melvin Mora, establish themselves in the past couple of seasons. I met Rodrigo Lopez when he was a rookie who won his first couple of starts and had rocky English, but a true appreciation for fans. I've got a black BP jersey in my closet and the classic O's Cooperstown hat that Cal used to wear when his '83 squad won the World Series.

Angelos has pretty much ruined all I love about the Orioles. He made a piss-poor attempt to improve the team the past two seasons, save for purchasing Miguel Tejada, while shedding away young components such as Denny Bautista in one of the worst trades in MLB history.

Then he tells people who live in or right outside of D.C. that they belong to him, going as far to sabotage attempts to secure a NL team and continued to polarize the area. He was a complete jerk during negotiations and held our TV rights hostage, so Nationals fans could not watch games the first week of the season or all of pre-season practically.

For someone who fears driving away fans from Camden Yards, he's done as much as possible to make them unwelcome.

So while you might continue to trek up to Baltimore for games, I'm pledging that as long as Angelos is in charge, I will never step foot in Camden Yards again. It hurts. I love Tejada, Roberts, Gibbons, Lopez, etc. And I'm happy the team is getting some early success, but I'm even happier to devote my time to a team of players that are not used to fans and are embracing everyone with open arms.

So there's your answer.

I'm glad you took the high road and included Toronto in your list of worth teams, Willco. You have gained an ally. Hopefully the two teams can fight it out all year long, while NY falls to pieces and Boston players continue to pose for magazine covers.

As both a hardcore Orioles fan, and also a hater of all things New York Yankees, I have to say I'm extremely pleased with what has transpired these last couple of weekends.

Though I know the Yanks will inevitably take first place over the course of the next 160 games, I'm going to savor the moment while I can.

But don't worry Yanks fans, I expect the O's to do the same to the Boston Red Sox this week.

Here's a pic of Mussina walking dejectedly off the mound Saturday night, right before his bullpen blows the game for the Yanks. I like the sign. A little bit of arrogance from the O's fans, eh? Haven't seen that in a couple of seasons. Feels good. :D

I like Toronto. They're a class act. A friend of mine, and my fantasy league commissioner to boot, is a Canadian-born Blue Jays fan. He was highly skeptical of them doing anything, but I felt they had made smart, well-rounded decisions to add players like Koskie and Hillenbrand.

And I felt that as long as Vernon Wells (who's slumping, though) and Doc Halladay bounce back, they'll be right in it. You really got to appreciate a team that doesn't rush their youngsters up and have a great farm system that's complimented by great scouts. They do all the minor league stuff right that Angelos & Co. do absolutely wrong.

Russ Adams and Alex Rios are going to be studs one day.

Plus, I have 7 Toronto players on my fantasy roster.

Yeah, seeing them stick it to New York was pretty great. It's good that you're staying with the Orioles, but as a D.C. area native, I really can't stand Angelos shit anymore. I will support the team from behind-the-scenes.

I don't know. Their team is old and nobody is performing up to expectations. Steinbrenner never lets the roster settle and that's part of the problem. With Baltimore and Toronto a lot better than they were even a year ago, they can't guarantee victories in non-Boston AL East series.

But don't worry Yanks fans, I expect the O's to do the same to the Boston Red Sox this week.

Good as time as any.

I saw that in The Washington Post this morning. I will still never forgive Mussina to this day.

I don't like to crow so I won't say the Yankees are done just yet. I expect Kevin Brown to bounce back much like he did today. He settled down very well after that horrid second inning. Randy Johnson is going to have a Cy Young type season, no questions asked. I expect Pavano and Wright to have bad years though, and I don't think the Moose has as much giddy-up on his fastball as he used to. The Yankee hitters are as good as ever, and Matsui is an absolute monster. However, the Yanks look much more vulnerable than years past. People say it every year(The Yanks started off pretty poorly last year, too). But I think the Yankees will bouce back.

But then, the Red Sox haven't looked too great, either. David Wells has looked awful for them, and they are really going to miss Pedro Martinez and Derek Lowe(Did you catch his last start? Now I'm starting to regret the O's not signing him!).

But the D-Rays and especially the Blue Jays look good this year. Both teams have been getting stellar pitching so far. I expect both of those teams to have better records against both the Yankees and Red Sox than they had last year.

I'm rooting for the Nats, too, though. Not that I'm gonna jump on their bandwagon just becuase they're doing well(And they are doing great), but I like to see a team that can go from almost being contracted, to being born anew in the span of a few years. I'm an O's fan for life, but a potential Washington/Baltimore world series someday would make me one happy baseball fanboy.

BELTWAY SERIES!

I think considering the way Angelos has pretty much disenfranchised those who live around D.C., I don't think I can ever go back to purely supporting the Orioles or doing so with the same passion that I did before. I mean, Angelos kind of cut us off and since then I've been here for every legal battle, exhibition game, uniform unveiling, etc. It's like seeing something brand new take off and you're apart of it.

I'd like to go back to Camden Yards one day, though. Catch a Yankee game or two. Y'know. But that'll have to wait until Angelos is gone or dead. Preferably both.

Angelos is a major part of 7 straight losing seasons. He's put his hand into the mix one too many times(Hiring Sid Thrift as GM, signing Albert Belle just to 'keep him away from the Yankees'). Though I admit, he's been better of late when it comes to keeping his nose out of the "baseball" decisions.

He needs to do these things if he intends to keep the team competitve: Keep Mazilli. I think with experience, he could be a very good manager. However, if the O's have another bad year, he's gone. And that's unfortunate. Angelos needs to learn that consistency is important when it comes to creating a winning franchise. Also, he needs to keep Flanagan at the helm.

Now that the O's have a TV deal in place with the Nats, Angelos has to put that money back into the team and not his own pocket. It's put out or shut up time for PA.

They need to fire one of the GMs. That two GMs system, plus Angelos' input, is going to be the ruin of the Orioles. Everyone in the league says they have one of the slowest and most ineffecient front offices in baseball. It's ridiculous. I'm still angry about that Bautista trade from last season.

Angelos also didn't go out and sign free agents because he was worried about the economic impact of the Nationals, so he sacrificed the potential talent for his own team to haggle the league into having regional rights negotiations favor his team.

What's the best way to keep Orioles revenue intact? Put out a winning ballclub. And he's not going to do that with Ponson and some struggling youngsters. Let's face it, if it weren't for Rodrigo Lopez and Bruce Chen, that rotation would be absolutely worthless right now.

The fact that arguably the greatest Orioles player of all-time, Cal Ripken Jr., wants nothing to do with the team and instead wants a job with the Nationals organization speaks volumes about Angelos as an owner.

Angelos is also going to get a huge chunk of the TV revenue, which kind of sucks for the Nationals for the next several years, but hopefully it'll enable Baltimore to stay competitive. My gut tells me that six or eight years down the line, regional broadcasting rights and revenue shares is going to big a huge problem for both ballclubs if Angelos is still around.

Jeff Weaver's year has been so random so far. 8 innings, 5 hits, no runs his first start. 3 innings, 11 hits, 8 runs his second.. and now he's at 7 innings, 5 hits, no runs in his third one. Crazy.

Can't believe we're gonna start off 9-2 -- how awesome is that. :D

I have a feeling Angelos sells the club in a few years. There's been a few rumors going around that he's been discussing it with various sources. Though, I'd like to see Cal or another Baltimore guy own the team.

As for the GM situation, I bet Beattie will be gone next season. He was only here to help Mike Flanagan get used to the business.
