Nick Van Exel's son gets murder charge

DALLAS -- The 20-year-old son of former NBA player Nick Van Exel has been charged with capital murder in the death of a close friend, Dallas police announced Thursday.

Nickey Maxwell Van Exel was arrested Wednesday night and jailed on $1 million bond in the death of Bradley Bassey Eyo, 23. Police said Eyo was found on Sunday with a gunshot wound to his upper body near Lake Ray Hubbard, on the outskirts of Dallas.

Authorities later determined that Eyo was killed at a home in the Dallas suburb of Garland and that his body was dumped near the lake, police said.

Paul Johnson, the younger Van Exel's attorney, told The Associated Press that his client told police he shot Eyo, a longtime friend and neighbor, while the two were engaged in "horseplay" with a shotgun. He said Van Exel didn't know the gun, which belonged to his stepfather, was loaded.

After the shooting, Van Exel "panicked" and moved the body, Johnson said. Van Exel also tossed the gun in a creek, and it has yet to be found, he said.

"It's a real sad situation," Johnson said. "Emotions are running high, and, obviously, we recognize that some very bad decisions were made on how he responded."

Johnson said he was contacted by Van Exel's family on Tuesday and immediately started working with authorities. The younger Van Exel has not yet appeared in court or entered a plea.

The elder Van Exel played for the Dallas Mavericks from 2001 to 2003 as part of an NBA career that spanned 13 seasons and six teams. He is now working as player development instructor for the Atlanta Hawks, a job he began in September.

A call to the Hawks' media relations department by the AP wasn't returned. In a statement, the team said its thoughts were with the Van Exel family.

Johnson said he spoke to the elder Van Exel and that he and others who knew Eyo were deeply saddened.

After thinking about it, I'm very disappointed that Sloan never tried Evans on LMA. He could have shut him down since Evans is longer and more athletic. I know that I pretty much blame every Jazz loss on the lack of Jeremy Evans and that I would probably say that hospital should have tried Evans as their surgeon on the heart bypass because of DAT 7'6 wingspan, but I think it would be true in this case.

Evans is incredible, he needs way more playing time. His skill set is way better than I thought, and his wingspan and explosion are the best in the league.
Evans is playing with plantar fasciatis, so he's not going to get a ton more playing time.

You would be banned from the thread if we banned stupidity
But you also wouldn't be here so I win a little.

As a knicks fan I'm happy with were the knicks are at. Every team goes through rebuilds. everyone. Those one year turn arounds that people are talking about are deceiving.

Boston was bad to mediocre and good every once in a while before their current contending team. Suns were in rebuild mode for a while before they added Nash and Q. He'll the Lakers were in rebuild mode for most of the 90's and even after they got Kobe they still took a season or 2 to become a contending team.

There isn't a team in the NBA that goes from elite to rebuild mode for one year and then back to elite. Its always a process. They either stock pile talent, the Talent develops, sign the right players or a combination of all those things. The truth of the situation is that a lot of contending teams built with a combination of what I listed. Hell, a lot of contending teams have lotto guys from other teams as part of their core.

So whatever happened to the Knicks finishing with a close record to the Heat and heat barely reaching 50 wins? :lol

Stupid points +1 for you.

How many teams rebuild for 10 years?
A lot? The team that has had the shortest turnaround since I've been watching basketball is the suns. Every 5 years are so they put together a contending team.

I still think the knicks will win like 45 games probably even more.

Man Magic are playing really well. I expected them to be a force to contend with now that they have such a crazy lineup but I thought it would take them a little longer to gel.

They still need another big, and Arenas gets lost on the court pretty easily, but they do look a lot better with Hedo back.

Yeah they definitely need just one more person to take pressure off of D-12 and give that poor dude some breathing room.

On another note every time my wife sees D-12 at the free throw line she can't help but make a comment over his action figure body. His tiny head makes his arms look like fork lifts.

Hedo is a fucking hustler lol. He didn't really try with the raps and the suns and now he's back to form. If I was him I would watch my back in those cities.

Truth. That Frail Blazers fan would have been banned for his knicks hate a few times over.
You would have been perma'd for your language years ago. Dude's always mad.

Oh god please don't listen to thekad. I've only had one other account. That other account was Hunter D. I used to post more on gaming side with that account. The problem with gaming side is that you can get a 3 month or more ban for the smallest things. I said Heavy Rain is basically a point and click adventure game/interactive movie and like 50 people quoted me calling for a ban. Of course I was. That's how GS works. If enough people ask for you to be banned it will happen. I started posting under this account. I told viak (dumb thing to do). He came on here and told everyone that I was the same guy that posted under the name Hunter D. I then promised not use my other sn anymore and that's the story.

It really didn't take viakado telling us who you were. All of us figured it out pretty quick :lol

Anthony Randolph trade -- Telfair and one of #Timberwolves extra first-round picks -- has the best chance of happening in due time.
:/

Got an underachieving former lottery pick taking up space on your roster? David Kahn's got a deal for you!

charsace said:
Telfair is garbage. It would have to be a lotto pick to get the trade done.
Telfair's a perfectly serviceable backup.

And a lottery pick for a guy racking up DNP-CDs on the Knicks? Get real. Nobody likes Randolph's mythical upside that much. It'll be Utah's first rounder.
