The Spurs got swept out of the first round? Dude...
The real difference? Healthy Manu.
I wasn't using swept literally in that sense, more like knocked out of the first round. Sorry, bad word choice obviously.
The real difference? Easier competition and a better overall team. None of which is primarily Duncan's credit.
As for this year's playoffs. Duncan can give you 16-7 and the team can still blow out the opposition. If Kobe gives you 16-7 this year...you're probably losing the game.
The Spurs went through a full rebuilding from 2008 till now. No one except the big 3 is still there. The Lakers did that from 2005-2008 too. And won two chips. Let's let him win a couple chips before we consider his in-career rebuild as successful.
As for him relinquishing control. Duncan can't be the dominant player for 66 games anymore. He plays 28 minutes a night, gets 15 and 9, and still has to take nights off. Those are 2nd option, 3rd option numbers. Not first option numbers. Kobe can still give you first option numbers and play B2B2B's. There will come a time when Kobe can only do 15 and 5 and play 25 minutes a night, but he's not there yet.
