Stop making sequel garbage and ten thousand capeshit films, and maybe people will bother again.
Guardians, Winter Soldier, & DoFP were among the winners this year, so.....yeah. Plus Avengers 2 is gonna make a billion bare minimum.

I've been stuck to this series since I was a kid and holy crap, after 4, this is been the most batshit yet amazing action series we've ever had.

Fast Five completely re-invented the franchise with the injection of the Rock and their decision to turn Dom's team into superheroes.

Love it.
...but Paul tho... :(

Yeah, there were only 4 superhero films this year? 3 next year? Those films are still surrounded by other types of films.

We're getting 3 next year, one is most likely gonna be a stinker that will most likely be overlooked anyway (F4), one is gonna print money guaranteed (Age of Ultron), & the other has the potential to be a surprise hit along the lines of GotG (Ant-Man).

Though the super-hero movies are gonna go into maximum overdrive after next year, & my body is ready......not so much my wallet.

I went to the movies yesterday for the first time in about 4-5 years (took kids to see Big Hero 6).
I now remember why I hate going to the movies. 30 minutes of advertisements and previews. 30 minutes!

What a waste of time. Much rather sit at home and watch a movie

Maybe you shouldn't come to the theater 30 mins early. It seems weird to complain about coming early when you don't have to.

The movie was scheduled to start at 10:30.
I rocked in at 10:35.
Movie started after 11.

As it was I had to sit in the second row because all the seats were taken; because the movie was meant to start at 10:30 - not 11

The Avengers 2 - maybe, leaning no
Star Wars: TFA - maybe
Fifty Shades of Grey - lol
Cinderella - no
Divergent 2 - no
Furious 7 - maybe, leaning yes
Mad Max: Fury Road - yes
Tomorrowland - no
San Andreas - video
Jurassic World - no
Ant-Man - no
Terminator: Genisys - no
Fantastic Four - no
Mission Impossible V - yes

quite exciting indeed

Why is no one including Spectre on their list? The last movie in the series made over a billion dollars at the box-office!

The script was part of a high profile leak, & it turned out to be pretty bad. I'm hopeful that changes are made between now & the release of the movie, but they did start shooting not too long ago.

Random question. When it comes to the overall yearly box office count, does what a 2014 movie make in 2015 count towards the overall of 2014 or 2015?

Bond movies are infamous for being written and drastically re-written while filming. I am not worried about that.

the 2015 movie list misses Jupiter Ascending, Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur and probably some other notable blockbusters too. I'm also looking forward to watch Everest

Just the big releases:

The Avengers 2
Star Wars: TFA
Fifty Shades of Grey
Cinderella
Divergent 2
Furious 7
Mad Max: Fury Road
Tomorrowland
San Andreas
Jurassic World
Ant-Man
Terminator: Genisys
Fantastic Four
Mission Impossible V

I guess I'll see star wars and Tomorrowland.

Honestly I'm just curious about what Star Wars has become in this installment moreso than the movie itself so I might just wait until it's available elsewhere. Tomorrowland is the only movie that sounds like it could be even close to worth purchasing a ticket for on it's own merits.

Least amount of theater trips for me this year since I was like 10. I think I saw 5 movies total. The ones I did see I loved tho.

Birdman
Interstellar
Guardians of the Galaxy
John Wick
Muppets Most Wanted

Why you diss Jupitur Ascending?

It was suppose to be the bomb of 2014

Even Open Road/Worldview Entertainment’s horror film Green Inferno from cult director Eli Roth was pulled from the slow post Labor Day frame (leaving zero new wide titles) — a period when a horror title could have easily generated some green from bored teens.
It's a shame this doesn't have a new release date.
Flick delivers unabashedly in the gore department and had a choice release date. Would love for more folks to have the opportunity to see it.
Horror market instead went to crap like Ouija, Annabelle and Dracula Untold that were garbage and very few people enjoyed.

I haven't bought a BRD in years.

If I don't see it in the theaters, it's likely gets forgotten until it's available on some paid streaming format or HBO.

:D

I'm the opposite. Skip the theaters but buy the bluray on day one.

Didn't see a single movie in a theater this year but easily spent over a grand building up a bluray collection.

Around Christmas my family wanted to go and see a movie. There wasn't a single movie any of us wanted to see in theaters. This news makes too much sense.

That's some old man yelling at clouds bullshit right there... It's 30 minutes man. Either go in later to avoid the previews or enjoy the previews like everyone else. Everyone who has been to the movies at least once in the last 4-5 years knows that

Yeah, there were only 4 superhero films this year? 3 next year? Those films are still surrounded by other types of films.

Those 4 films also took home about 10% of the entire domestic box office this year.

There was also Ninja Turtles and Transformers if they count. Did any comic-related franchise bomb other than Sin City 2 this year?

As for this past year...no Pixar and no franchise has really replaced Harry Potter yet which doesn't help I suppose. Good to see Sony going up 9% and Fox making more new titles

I wish box office was tracked by the amount of tickets sold. That would be a lot more interesting to me.
Because no movie will ever look as good in a list based on ticket sales compared to gross where the list is a revolving door of random shit at this point, except numbers 1 and 2.

In the past 15 years there is only movie to make it to the top 15 all time ticket sales, and that's Avatar. The only other movie in the past 30 years to make it in is Titanic.

Basically listing by ticket sales only benefits James Cameron.

Theres less previews if you dont go on opening day.

Interstellar was the only movie in the top 10 box office movies for 2014 that was original work and not a sequel

Reminds me of this graphic and the ever-shrinking original IPs (perhaps video games and films learn a lot from eachother ):

There were some horrible big name movies this year. Transformers and Anchorman 2 were both really bad. I feel there are a lot of great movies that don't get the marketing support since it's all spent on the sequels and by the number comic book movies. Gone Girl, Birdman, and Imitation Game are all great movies that deserve better treatment.

Anchorman 2 came out in 2013

I'd say this has been one of the better years for blockbusters in terms of quality, but the industry does seem like its heading for a further decline if it doesn;t start taking more risks. Marvel were rewarded by redefining Winter Soldier and launching Guardians of the Galaxy, and those will be essential for future films too... Yes, even films called Star Wars.

I think it's legitimate complaint.

If they advertise that the movie begins at a certain time then it should begin at that time.
Now, I can understand 5-10 minutes of ads but 30 minutes of ads; nope, I'm not taking that. For a 90 minute film? That's just stupid

There was about 3 previews and the rest ads.

And it's not as easy as saying 'just rock up 30 minutes later' because the movie has been advertised to start a certain time and everyone rocks up before then, so if I show up later I'll be stuck down the front - like the time I'm mentioning.

It's stupid and I can't believe people have accepted it to be honest. I know why the cinema does it though, if they advertised that a movie started at a certain time and, lo and behold, they actually started it at that time then no one would see their crappy ads.

Well, I'm not paying exorbitant prices to watch their ads. Feel free to continue racing to the bottom though

We have two movies guaranteed to make at least 1.5 bill each (Star Wars & Avengers). That alone makes it a lot more significant than last year.

Hell it is the first year since Avatar came out in 2009 we actually have films (again, Star Wars & Avengers) that could challenge the all mighty 2 billion number.

I don't see SW being so big. I'll be surprised if it passes $1b tbh.

Phantom Menace did over a billion back in 1999. Ticket prices have massively inflated since then and the worldwide box office blew up. In todays box office the numbers Phantom Menace did are well over 1.5 billion

Even revenge of the sith nearly did a billion 10 years ago! It's be wellllll past 1 bil in today's market.

What you are saying is you expect Force Awakens to do worse than the prequels.

All that graph shows is that Hollywood has become completely reliant on blockbuster movies or rather that the greneral public's taste in movies has drastically changed over over the last 30+ years. Most studio execs talk openly about the blockbuster business model. New IPs simply have a harder time becoming huge hits today. However, that doesn't mean new IPs don't exist. The best movies this year were new IPs.
