I'd say Dempsey had a solid game..... the USA losing Altidore early really changed the game Johansson did nothing when he came on. altidore was winning the ball consistenly with his strength.

Jozy's the only guy we have that can play that way, Johannson likes to sit back behind guys like Jozy and take advantage of their play. He's said as much before. Without Altidore our attack isn't nearly as dangerous. Hopefully the injury isn't too bad and he can make his way back.

People don't understand how dangerous Jozy is, with or without goals. His absence is a major problem. His goal scoring ability is important of course, but his hold up play is far more important IMO.

Johanson needs service...and so does Wondo...so erm planB is??

Might force the US to play a bit more...which is a only a good thing. Win lose or draw.

Please tell me a time where a player lowers his head, gets kicked in the head "not a bit of boot" to his head and a foul was not given. Would love to know examples of this.

Danish superliga 15 august 2003, AGF vs aab , look it up.

that is not a real match, I'm in bed and even if i wasn't I doubt I could just find the match
.

Also you are moving the goal posts now. You started out by saying any contact to the head.

A tear is technically a sprain.

Don't think we'll see him again this world cup. Shame really.

well, yes and no. Medically speaking a strain is a low-grade tear, but generally the "tear" language is reserved for a severe injury.

That said, I suspect they're playing the PR game on this one and that it's worse than they're letting on. I agree with you that we probably won't see him again.

How many other options were there? 1 maybe?

Terrance Boyd, Eddie Johnson... even Juan Agudelo would be far closer to it than say Chris Wondolowski (see Agudelo's header to Bradley vs Russia)... Wondo always plays with a target man for San Jose, Agudelo can handle being up front by himself.

His hold up play is okay, nothing special. Klinnsman should just experiment with throwing another man in center midfield. Ghana completely dominated them in possession, it will only be worse against Portugal and Germany. Pray for another early goal from Dempsey since they rarely create from open play, hold on for dear life, and then try to steal a goal from set pieces. that is USA's best chance.

Agreed. I think we can still make it out of the group without him, but it's going to be a lot harder as demonstrated by today's game. Our attack basically fell apart without him up top doing his thing. We can still win, or at least score some goals, but it's even more of an uphill climb now.

I'm no doctor but I think you can strain(sprain?) a hamstring and I think it goes by grades. Grade 1 is just what he has... a grade 2 or 3 is completely tearing it.

oh yeah. damn autocorrect.

regardless, there's muscle damage due to unnatural motion/torque. hammies are bad news, takes forever to heal even a minor strain.

tony parker played on a grade 2 strain last year in the finals. didn't look himself, but you never know

Eddie is the correct answer. With his thousand step overs to boot. Landon deep midfield scoring would offer a planB also.

Eddie in set pieces would have been killer actually*

*Sounders Season ticket holder first person evidence.

Good thing Klinsmann brought zero other target forwards!

Ughhhhhh. xbhaskarx is a regular in the MLS thread so he know my woes and the problems that I feel can happen with the lack of a target forward. Portland didn't have one this season, then we got one and... Well...

Plan b I assume is play for the tie. Let Germany wreck everything and everyone and pull the tie out against Portugal. I think we can still beat Portugal, honestly. This game was all about playing it safe.

I don't think anyone is expecting the US to do much against Germany. Our only chance at anything other than a multiple goal loss there is if Germany just lays back and gives no fucks due them already having 6 points by that game, which is obviously likely (the 6 points, not necessarily the lax play). Stranger things have happened.

If the US plays against Portugal like it did today, they will certainly lose. The man to man defense couldn't hang with most of the Ghana players who made offensive runs, they sure as shit won't be able to do handle Ronaldo.

We really should have brought Eddie over Wondo, if only because of this sort of scenario.

I also think we can beat Portugal without Altidore, but we're going to have to adjust our game plan going forward.

We were never going to beat Germany, even playing at our best with no injuries. Not the way they are playing. They're just going to roll over this entire group like it's nothing.

The only hope is Portugal collapsing further or Germany not giving a fuck. Maybe Ghana can give Portugal some trouble that's the third hope.

bounced around a bunch, hasn't lived up to his potential, but he's still young enough to turn it around.

What the hell are you talking about?
Agudelo had the best scoring rate of regular forwards in MLS last season with the Revs, and was part of their transformation from an awful team into the most exciting team in the league and one that almost got past eventual champions KC in the playoffs. Then he was signed by Stoke City but couldn't get a work permit so went on loan to a crappy Utrecht team where he managed to play pretty well and score some goals. Now bigger clubs in Netherlands and Germany are said to be interested in signing him. How has he not lived up to his potential?

Having had a front-row seat to Eddie Johnson this spring, we really, REALLY don't want to go down that road.

He has been worse than Connor Doyle.

I'm no where near the physical monster that Altidore is but I had a grade 2 mid may and I could walk (barely) after the injury. It felt good two weeks later and i tried to run and it tore again. Altidore is done for the WC. I hope I am wrong but the demand on a player's legs might be too much .

14 appearances, 3 goals. Hardly a prolific strike rate.

I'm not writing the kid off, but his form wasn't up to making this roster this year.

Hell, Dempsey at 22 was a long, long way from the Dempsey of today.

Eddie is the right choice but his sudden trade and loss of form and disruptive attitude was always going to make him and easy cut.

But for his heading ability alone he should been included. Set pieces are they key to US success.

US has a good chance at advancing with a tie next Sunday. I don't think that will require a miracle or anything.

Definitely have to play better, especially Bradley who was shit.

I dont think Eddie had any place on this team. Eddie has been shit, and his attitude has been toxic. Another target forward, sure. Anyone but Eddie. His time is over. I'm also super glad Wondo also deserves to be on the team.

We can still progress. Our team has the depth to compete against Portugal. Especially after what I saw today.

if Rui Patricio returns in nets and makes two major mistakes like he did today, yeah the US has a chance to tie.

if Eduardo takes his rightful place as keepr, then Portugal wins decisively with a clean sheet. You shall not pass

but Bento is a former Sporting coach and for ass-warped reason favors Sporting keeper Rui Patricio

He moved overseas to a new league for the first time, and was playing for a crappy team that ended up with a -19 goal differential.

1. Agreed on EJ
2. Deserve has nothing to do with it, teams are here to win not to reward nice guys who have worked hard

I like Wondo too, but neither him nor Johannson are good subs for the way Altidore plays. No use in talking about that now anyway. We'll just have to make due.

I definitely agree we can take Portugal though. It'll be rough going, but we can do it.

How does that quality compare to the US squad?

I thought both teams in this game looked pretty shitty. It was an exciting game but not quality football. Portugal should be ashamed if they couldn't muster a win against the two.

Prediction 3-1 Ghana win.

The fact that the US game isn't even on abc really says it all. I mean wow no fucks given.

When the team is actually good and in a easy group?

The sooner Ghana wins the sooner we can drop this false hope from US fans. Frankly, it's ridiculous.

They'd be lucky to get a single win out of this group. Today is their best chance.

Fuck off. Thanks :-)

I know. I'm not bagging on the kid, I think he'll help us in the future, but the team was put together for this month. I have a pretty good handle on where he's been in the last year.

If deserves is the criteria than sure you are right. But the best team should go. Meaning the all the pieces that fit for a given system. I just happen to think that system should be around a target striker and someone great in the air and strong. Jozy and Eddie are the only two that fit that - Johansson is going to get destroyed out there.

Perhaps he can prove me wrong.

I don't think Eddie has ever really been a target type of forward. There's a reason teams have been trying to move him to outside midfield his entire career. He's best going forward, not with his back to goal, much like Johansson. (only, not as good as Johansson lately)

If you want a player for that role, Eddie has never been your guy. He wants to be the player who works off of that guy

Paulo Bento seems to be the type of coach that would rather call up players he's friends with, those he coached before, or those that Jorge Mendes wants. He lacks balls. Portugal has a bunch of good coaches, there's no reason for him to be coach. Worst part is we're stuck with him until 2016.
