I have a couple of newbie questions about penalty kicking before the festivities start today. Occasionally during a penalty kick, players will line up in front of the guy doing the kicking like this:

I know they're attempting to block or deflect the ball, but what is the difference between this kind of penalty kick versus the kind where a player will just attempt to kick the ball straight into the goal unobstructed (aside from the keeper that is)? Does is depend on the severity of the penalty? What dictates how far away from the player doing the kicking they're supposed to stand? I've also noticed that the number of players attempting to block the ball changes from kick to kick.

That's a Free Kick not a penalty.
If a player is fouled inside the box (the red area in this pic) he is rewarded a penalty. In that case he can shoot without a wall from 12 yards.

If someone is fouled outside of the box his team gets a free kick. That's the one your talking about with the wall. The wall has to stand 10 yards away from the free kick taker and you can place as many players as you want in the wall. Usually the goalkeeper sets up the wall and decide how many players he wants in it.

A penalty (the one without players lining up) happens when there is a foul within the panalty area (the box area of the goalkeeper). A free kick (the one with the wall of players) happens when there is a foul anywhere outside the penalty area.

Australia working really hard early. Look a lot better than in the first match, hopefully they aren't going to burn themselves out to quickly.

That's a free kick, as opposed to a penalty kick (no wall). Penalty kicks only occur when a foul is commited in the penalty area (the largest box aroung the goal).
Players in the wall always have to stand 9.15m (10 yards) away from the ball at least.
The number of players in the wall is decided by the keeper.

damn I'm so fucking nervous about today's match. I really hope we beat 5pa1n, but that would mean playing our best match in a World Cup since... well, pretty much since 1962. Sadly, I think we're going to see a case of "jugamos como nunca, perdimos como siempre": we played like never before, but lost as we always do.

On the other hand, I'm hoping Alexis himselfs beats their condescending asses to the fucking ground. I'm tired of him being looked down upon by the spanish press even when he's playing well. He was even made a scapegoat for Barca's terrible performances, for a while! So yeah, I really hope he gets his revenge.

My man, I feel exactly the same way, I hope Alexis gtfo of Barcelona after the wc.

Edit: holy shit what an incredible goal, wtf.

By the time this post goes through I expect the next few goals have already happened.

Cahill goal was a thing of beauty.
