2014 Microsoft E3 Conference

The most interesting games (everything during the latter part of the conference) they showed were pure CGI, which means all that stuff is a long way off. Translation: late 2015 at the earliest.

Pretty sure they'll be a fair number of delays next year from MS.

Sunset Overdrive was the clear winner here. Taking the piss out of the grimdark COD shootery stuff was a bit on the nose, but still appreciated. Beautiful colours, smooth animation, it just looks like pure fun. I read the Edge article last month but it didn't do it justice, I was really impressed.

Crackdown is nice to have back with D. Jones at the helm. Halo Collection we knew about, but it will also be great to have everything on one disc, Criterion-ized for your pleasure. Plus a day without Dan Ayoub on stage is like a woman without diamonds or a day without Twinkies. Good stuff.

Felt bad for the Harmonix dev. Sucks to have the rug pulled out from underneath you like that.

All in all, a decent conference. No megatons.

I thought MS did a pretty good job considering how awful their press conference was last year. They have really turned around the Xbox brand this past year, and this conference was definitely a step in the right direction. There were plenty of games in there that I would be interested in if I had an Xbox One, but there was nothing there that screamed BUY AN XBOX ONE.

We'll have to see what Sony drops...

highlights -

-the sunset overdrive footage was compelling, even if the main character was a touch obnoxious. i dug the little joke at the beginning, “cover mechanics.”

-unity looks like a competent assassin’s creed. it seems they might have made it easier to jump down from things - an essential change. it’s still assassin’s creed but…with the dynamic crowd interactions and amped up visuals, could be something to look forward to.

-ori and the blind forest. heavily ghibli inspired. awesome little 2d action platformer from the look of it. one to look forward too. i don’t know much about moon studios, but their influences are on point.

-project spark - i doubt its single player campaign will be worth much, but the users will make this brilliant in the long run. could be amazing with proper developer support.

-master chief collection - an incredible value and a killer app. all four mainline halos? halo 2 multiplayer on its original engine? everything at 60 fps and 1080p? all for $60? damn. plus the beta for 5 is out at the end of 2014. it’ll be a halo jolly christmas.

-cup head - holy shit, that visual style. vintage disney, brilliant stuff.

So we got to see CGI trailers of a bunch of games that we already knew were coming?

Cool I guess.

People's expectations were too high. You have to consider we pretty much knew of everything coming for 2014 and most of 2015. Games targeting next fall are too early to show off (Halo 5, Crackdown, Gears, Tomb Raider) so of course they are going to use CG.

You better believe it will be the same situation for Sony. You aren't going to be seeing much in-game footage for games 1 1/2 to 2 years out.

8/10.

People forget the CGI stuff was for the 2015 games, games that aren't ready to be shown yet. All the 2014 games got gameplay footage.

Did people really expect games that are 18-24 months away to have in-game footage?

Best conference I've seen in a long, long time, nothing but games.

As an Xbox fan I haven't been this excited since midway through the 360 years.

Lots to play this year and next.

And damn Crackdown!

Conference was pretty good! Not an Xbox guy myself, but previously announced titles looked great and the suprises/megatons were big enough to warrant hype (Stormdust, Crackdown).

The structure of the presentation itself, games aside, was amazing. No BS (except for those #myfavoritegame bits), just games. If they show a bit more gameplay instead of CGI then Microsoft should definitly keep this format for all E3's to come.

That Conker tease was just awful though. Him appearing was my only 'OH SHIT IT'S HAPPENING!' moment of the whole thing, and then he turns out to be nothing but a cheap Project Spark tie-in. I mean cmon. :(

Man, some people are hard to please. That conference was everything you'd want out of a conference, CGI or not. Focus on games the whole time. And people are like, "meh." Haha tough crowd. I thought it was ridiculously entertaining whether I was interested in specific games or not. Ori and Inside were a refreshing break from the first person shooters. Lots of people complaining about how the games aren't coming out right away, but I seem to remember a lot of people making fun of Microsoft for what they might provide down the stretch. Can't win.

I thought it was highly enjoyable and really well produced but not one surprise for me. Very surprised ironically that I was not surprised. Everything was known ahead of time, but that's ok. Great presentation and fantastic pacing.

My thoughts exactly. I'm delighted to have Crackdown confirmed but I expected it.

Very Solid conference overall. No real highs but at the same time there were no lows. Just a constant stream of games. Wished they showed Quantum Break and Gears but I'll live with Kamiya.

Can't wait to see what everyone else has in-store.

I'd give it a B-/C+, the best Xbox conference I can even remember.

I liked Scalebound and Project Spark, but that's pretty much it. Fable Legend's dungeon master system sounds like ti could be great, but I've had terrible experiences with the Fable series.

I think Sony's and Nintendo's events will be better though.

Well that was disappointing.

- I'll have to go back and count exclusives, but my initial impression was that Microsoft announced more exclusives last year than this year.
- Microsoft had more 3rd party titles on stage than I expected, all of which are multi-platform.
- The heavy use of CGI trailers was also disappointing. Microsoft & the rest of the industry really need to get away from using CGI trailers.
- And no megaton this year on par with Titanfall. Last year Titanfall rocked E3, won more awards than any other game and was the biggest 3rd party exclusive for 2014. Microsoft didn't announce a Titanfall equivalent for 2015, unless you think that's Halo 5.
- Witcher 3 looked great, The Division (predictably) got downgraded and we get more Tomb Raider.

That was mediocre. In a book, this is called foreshadowing. I think they have set the tone for the rest of today's conferences, chock full of meh.

7/10. I believe this is how E3 should be; just about games. Microsoft did good with the conference but I didn't find their exclusives to be great. We knew about most of them and/or they weren't big announcements. Crackdown and sunset overdrive were the best part of the show. The CGI trailers put me off and the games that I want that the Xbox one has I can get them on the PC or 360.

No Gears was a disappointment for me, major. No Mass Effect; two of my favorite franchises, not a peep. Sunset Overdrive and Inside were the games of the conference, but nothing really made me feel that I need an X1 right now. That Crackdown trailer did nothing for me, surprisingly. The Division looked good, as did AC: Unity, but all the multis it will get on PS4. Very safe conference, a little too safe, from MS imo.

It is an improvement but too much CGI and no real innovation.

INSIDE was the most interesting game.
Sunset Overdrive a bit too hectic and confusing.
Scalebound most mysterious (what's the game about?).

C+.

That was actually a very good conference, but nothing in it sold me on an XBO. As it stands, Sunset Overdrive is the only exclusive that I'm really hyped for... But I can't buy another console for one game.

Disclaimer: I was so pissed over the Conker fiasco that I missed the trailer for Ori, which seems to be an early favorite. Need to view it STAT.

Well... I'd probably give it a C+. I'm not convinced to buy an Xbox One.

Notable things:

1. I'm in love with everything Sunset Overdrive.
2. Tomb Raider 2 announcement!
3. Very interested in the new Dragon Age game after the trailer.
4. Platinum and Kamiya! Dragon Rider Dante looks fun, and I can't wait to see more from this game.
5. The Capcom jokes and fanservice in that DR3 trailer was awesome.

What really brings it down for me is the complete lack of or shitting on Rare. You tease Killer Instinct and don't show shit, you MEGATON tease Conker and fuck fans in the face. I was hoping Perfect Dark or Banjo-Kazooie or SOMETHING would show but alas we get Phantom Dust 2.

Not really many megatons if any, expected more from MS. Hopefully Sony will do better, well if Project Beast is real they all ready have. Also, stop with all the CGI trailers and no gameplay footage, I want to see what is looks like while I am playing it, not what some talented guy from Blur is able to do on some PC.

Like Horizon, Halo, Crackdown, Playdead game, Tomb Raider. Unsure of Sunset but looks cool.

Content First on Xbox One is completely pointless, a waste of good money and means nothing to consumers on any platform.

Fable needs taken out the back and shot.

Too much 3rd party and CGI trailers.

Pretty good conference.

They managed to convince me to buy a xbox one, something I thought would never happen.

But first things first. I FUCKING HATED the fact that MS preaches that they're about gamers, yet fucking money hatted everything to be delayed on the PS4. Fucking hated.

But other than that?

Nice set of announcements.

Phantom Dust being the highlight. Was not expecting it.
Scalebound still needs to show gameplay, but it's platinum. No danger there.
Sunset Overdrive looks like it'll be boring FAST. Doesn't interest me.
Halo... never cared about it.
Ori. Game of the conference.
Crackdown. Hopefully more like the 1st one than the second.
Fable Legends. First time a Fable game looks interesting.
Project Spark. Fuck you Microsoft.
Forza Horizon 2. Cringed at the clubs announcement. Do your own stuff MS. Don't go copy shit from the competitor.

The rest are 3rd party so they don't count... other than the fact MS paid to delay shit on PS4.

I give it a B+. Shame many of the announcements were CGI. Gameplay would've been nice.

I honestly was expecting Shenmue to be announced.

Frankly I've always disliked Microsoft and Xbox, but this conference was packed! A very good conference, and damn I counted 22 games, Spencer wasn't kidding. I'm eager to see how Sony retaliates.

Seems like if you're a XBox fan you'd be content with that conference. Can't say I cared about too much of it though. Ori and Inside are the games I'd like to play.

7/10

Good conference. They didn't let EA take over the conference. No stupid memes or goofy attempts at humor. The announcements didn't really hype me or surprise me but console footage of witcher 3 was awesome and the highlight for me. Waaayy too much cg though. That's my own personal preference since we've reached a point in graphical fidelity where we honestly don't need it in games anymore. Its there mostly for marketing purposes.
