I didn't play the original so I can't do a comparison, but I gotta say it looks really nice. Maybe there's a weaker texture here and there and the excessive use of invisible walls is annoying, but overall I am satisfied with what I've played so far (which sadly is not a lot).

I'm surprisingly enjoying this after hating Senran Kagura (same devs). Not the best hack 'n' slash, and the writing's quite dull, but the core gameplay is entertaining enough.

They are not the same developers. Marvelous develops Senran Kagura and D3 Publisher develops the Onechanbara series.

Hmm well after some searching to fact check it does look like Tamsoft has had a hand in the Nintendo Kagura games. I've only paid attention to the Playstation games. The PlayStation series of Senran Kagura games are handled my Marvelous. I am pretty sure though that Marvelous owns the actual rights to the franchise though.
