21:9 Gaming Thread | That cinematic feel

Found a great article benchmarking 4K vs 3440x1440 using the new 1080 card. I plan on upgrading from my 2560x1080 monitor to a 3440x1440 G-sync monitor later this year so the 1080 looks like a perfect fit.

http://techgage.com/article/nvidia-geforce-gtx-1080-review-a-look-at-4k-ultra-wide-gaming/

If the 1070 has the same power as a TitanX then it seems to me that it is a better ratio power/price for 3440x1440 gaming, especially if you need to buy an expensive (G-sync) monitor at the same moment.

Only cases where it seems to be better is if you have the money, want the extra detail-fps (Titan X already achives 60 pretty much in every game, especially if you tone down details) or want to invest for the next 3 years or so (with more demanding games)

I played the entire game in 21:9 and it worked perfectly

Just got this recently, and 21:9 is god tier. Every game benefits from it.

DOOM supports 21:9 just fine. Will check out that flawless widescreen fix though!

The gun models in Doom at 21:9 are stretched, at least from the gameplay I've seen. You should check out the Flawless Widescreen fix until
/ if
they do an update

That gun model doesn't look right. It's super stretched. I can't be the only one who is noticing this? The resolution itself might be supported, but the models are bugging out.

Here's comparison images. This is not a good thing. It's easily fixed though, but I don't know how ID didn't notice it.

Oh sweet, no idea where I got the notion that it didn't support 21:9 then! Getting my new 21:9 screen today and can't wait to test it out with Doom!

edit: Great setup by the way, Supernorn.

Caved in and bought the 29" LG model.

Fuck me, how is this not the great best thing. I have tried 4K, and this shit is more impressive. Just jaw dropping amazing.

I feel the same way about my new Freesync monitor but that's 1080p. Has anyone combined the two yet?

You mean an ultrawide freesync monitor? Of course. There was one available from LG when Freesync launched. There are other, better options now though.
I bought the LG when it first came out, still love the monitor.

Caved and bought the X34. Fantastic monitor and Doom looks awesome. My one complaint is the footprint of the stand,it almost takes up the whole top part of my desk.

Completely new to this concept, kind of interested, even though I game on my 4K 65" 99.9% of the time, this could be interesting enough to get me back in my office, (along with VR).

I currently have two 1080p monitors that I never use anymore.

What's a great high res Gsync 21:9?

I have the 29 inch LG too. Love it. And yes ultrawide is more mind blowing than 4k (16:9 anyway) to me also. :)

Just got Doom too, woo!

So how do the monitor's handle that? Just black bars on the sides in the 1980x1080 fullscreen or runs in windowed mode.

Diablo 3 appears to support 21:9 when running in Borderless Windowed mode.

Usually, if a game doesn't support the aspect ratio, one of two things will happen. Either the game has support for the resolution and will toss black bars on the side (See: Overwatch) or you run the game at 1920x1080 and the monitor itself tosses black bars there.

Is the LG 29um67 the only IPS Ultrawide Freesync 2560x1080 monitor? I'm thinking about getting an ultrawide monitor but it needs to be IPS and support freesync. And also not ridiculously expensive (hence the 2560x1080 resolution).

Is there a big picture quality difference between 3440x1440 and 4k? Want a ultrawide monitor but also want very high resolution. So I don't know what to get, and I never experienced uhd, but it looks amazing.
Also if a game doesn't support uhd will the games scale to the rez of a 16:9 monitor and look the same? like will 2560x1440p game lose quality on a ultrawide display?

Can't answer your first question, as I don't own either a 3440x1440 or 4K monitor.

In regards to the second: No, there shouldn't be any loss of quality. You'll simply get black bars on the side. Misunderstood the question I think...?

3840x2160 = 8.3 megapixels

3440x1440 = 5 megapixels

That's a pretty big difference. 4K certainly does look better, but you can always use DSR on your 3440x1440 to come close to the same quality.

I find 3440x1440 on a 34" monitor to be just the right pixel density for desktop use. I don't have to use scaling. With a 4K monitor, I definitely would, and I really don't like scaling.

Do some of you have the Samsung S34E790C ? What do you think about the quality of the VA panel ? Does it have problems on the long run ? Is it possible to get it for cheaper than 700€ in the EU ?

I hope they release a G-sync version of that soon (IIRC they announced a 144Hz version) but that is going to cost more than a thousand.

Having both, it will depend on the size of the 4k monitor, at 24" the 4k will look much sharper, at 32" it looks about the same as 3440x1440 @ 34"

If you are looking for insane resolution, check the DELL or HP 5k 27". Its like looking through a window at that size

This was me, I had moved to playing most things on my 65" 4K as well. Bought an X34, and have not really loaded a game on the TV since.

Yup. I've spent some time with 55" 4K, and a 1080p OLED. Overall the X34 is my preferred display for gaming. I will probably stick with it until an OLED+high refresh rate+G-Sync panel gets here.

Whelp, that sounds better than nothing but I think with my budget i could get a 29" none Gysnc. Or I could get a 144hz Gsync 1080p and have money left over. I really get annoyed with tearing and poor refresh rate but I have a few friends that keep telling me if you are paying for high refresh rate monitors and not getting g/free sync you are wasting money.
Sounds a bit hyperbolic but they may have a point. I just wish there was a good < $500 option that filled that want.

It really depends on what kind of games you play. If your intent is to play stuff that's fast paced and multiplayer, there is value in a high refresh rate. If you're interested in image quality regardless of framerate, there is value in Gsync/Freesync.

The real draw of 21:9 as an aspect ratio is the expanded space tho. It's supported by the vast majority of games, and it is very immersive. As an amateur photographer I love it, and as a MMORPG player, I love the fact that I can have so much on screen without cluttering things.

It's also fantastic for movies too. So if you're a movie lover like I am, there's additional benefit.

I used to be a big mmo player but now that I have kids I don't have any desire to put that kind of hours into a thing. I wouldn't say that I am really a competitive shooter player, but I do plan on getting Overwatch. I was pretty blown away by the beta i decided to build a new PC. My favorite genres are rpgs, action rpgs, strategy and I enjoy shooters like borderlands and farcry from time to time. I have an unnatural love for smooth frame rates and it drives me nuts when I get a lot of tearing.

I have to say, earlier in the thread I saw someone playing the Witcher 3 in 21:9 and I subbed to this thread. Watching DS3 in this ratio again made me go wow. I just know me and I want the best and I just can't justify paying almost as much for my 34" monitor as I did for my 65" 4K TV (even if I got one hell of a deal on that tv).

Yeah, The Witcher 3 is fantastic in 21:9.

But it sounds like you probably want a G-Sync/Freesync monitor first.

I'd definitely buy something like the Acer Predator if I had the money tho. :P

Some stuff look worst on monitors when not in the native resolution. Was wondering if games that don't support 21:9 will look worst with the black bars than it would on a regular 16:9 1440p monitor.

Lol, won't be able to run a game.

If you want a first-hand taste of 21:9 (or even 3840x1080, superultrawide) and have a way to connect your PC to that 4k TV you can use virtual resolutions, it's how I do it.

Seems like there hasn't been any movement in the 21:9 monitor field in a while seems like we haven't had any real product launches since that Acer monitor.

Oh, if you're talking simply 21:9 to it's 16:9 equivalent resolution, then I've not seen any case of that happening.

It doesn't look worse from a technical/IQ standpoint, no. In this scenario, you're running at 2560x1440, so you're still driving the panel at native res, you're just not filling the whole screen on the horizontal axis. Sharpness and IQ will be no different than 3440x1440.

With that said, it's not very aesthetically pleasing to have pillar boxes on one of these monitors, IMO. Backlight bleed can be more noticeable in the pillar boxes as well if your particular monitor struggles with that.

Bummed that Overwatch does not support ultrawide.

No fix in Flawless widescreen, I hope they add it.

I decided on Spending my upgrade budget on the new NVidia Card coming out. Gives me some time to upgrade later to a better monitor. I am hoping that 34" Monoprice IPS monitor might be good. I am willing to give up the G Sync for that 100hz and IPS display. 34" seems like the sweet spot for height. I checked out some 29" displays and found the height to be just a little less than I would want.

Does anyone have any experience with the Samsung S34E790C? The design is quite nice.

I recently joined the 21:9 club with a X34, it isn't a 'perfect' screen but I only paid £500 for it B-Grade, that being said I love it worts an all! It's strange how quickly you become accustomed to the size and aspect ratio, it feels just right, natural, oddly enough I think the 100hz and GSYNC has impressed me more than even aspect ratio, 60Hz vs 100Hz, it really is night and day, even scrolling in your web browser is infinitely smooth, I remember when I originally bought the Dell Ultrasahrp 2407wfp not long after they were released, was about on par with the cost of this panal at the time!, and I remember thinking this is the future of PC gaming! And is is exactly how I feel about this screen, can't wait until 21:9 aspect ratio hits the TV marketplace, in fact I have a feeling that could be the next big thing after 4k.

I messaged Hayden for it (Flawless Widescreen) so hoping for a fix, but you can't even hex in the 21:9, so I wonder if its even possible...and if it is, the warden may catch it and ban users :\

Oh that sucks.

There is a big thread on the Overwatch forum, along with reddit. There was 21:9 support in the beta and it worked fine apparently.

http://us.battle.net/forums/en/overwatch/topic/20744334240

Appears to have the most replies on the forum too.

Another new one popped up.

And reddit.

They have tweeted a few of the larger youtubers about it also.

The Beta work around was an easy hex hack. My guess it was removed because it was too easy to hack, but who knows.... I sure hope someone will figure it out(but don't hold your breath)

The thing is, I believe the edit is still possible, but the anit-cheat system will basically ban you because you edited game files and mark you as a cheater.

Finally saw a 34" 1440p ultrawide a couple of days ago (the Predator X34 but sadly w/o gsync enabled and a Samsung UC...97? I think?)

Main takeaway - I think I need bigger. 34" just feels too similar to my 27" 1440p monitor (and it is since it's literally the same vertical height).

Will wait for a, say, 40 or so inch ultrawide before reassessing my lack of desire for one.

I'm looking at picking up a U3415W soon, if nothing is announced at Computex at least; and I'm wondering if anyone knows of a dual monitor arm that will work with both a 34" and 27"?

temp Overwatch fix for NVIDIA users-
(from WSGF)

I have come up with some sort of fix for ppl which will like to get rid off black bars till Blizz fix this, myb for someone will not be the best solution but for ppl who would like then here you go =)

Sample from Predator x34:
https://goo.gl/Qz5W9A
https://goo.gl/kR1vWK
https://goo.gl/MhltB1
https://goo.gl/TXlfsk

1. If your desktop is not native 3440x1440 then make one in Nvidia control panel and make it active on desktop http://prnt.sc/b9axi1

2. then go to "Adjust Desktop Size and Position", check mark on Full-screen, Perform scaling on: GPU and check box on "Override..." Set resolution to 2560x1440 http://prnt.sc/b9axb2

3. Start the game, go to Options and then Video, change resolution to 2560x1440 and WUUALLA :D

If you want to get more perfect quality then increase "Render Scale" (oc if you have good horse power of gpu)

if some one does not find this helpful then other solution to make black bars a bit less then they are, make Customised resolution 3000x1440 and make it use in game and you will have less black bars on side

Support us here: http://us.battle.net/forums/en/overwatc ... =2#post-33

Anyone have any insight as to the new widescreen (if any?) monitors being shown at Computex? I don't want to pull the trigger on another x34 when something better may be revealed.

There's a 35" VA 3440x1440 dp1.4 144hz monitor by AOC announced, not sure if it will be at computex, but I hope it is. There might be similar monitors and 4k 120hz, dp1.4 stuff etc at computex though, so keep an eye out.

Ended up getting one of these recently....wow. BIG improvment coming from dual monitor. Better for productivity and it even surprised me on some games.

One complaint, I tried loading F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate on it. It works, but there's some fish-eye lens stuff going on towards the edges. I'm guessing this just has to do with the age of the game not accounting for the aspect ratio?
