21:9 Gaming Thread | That cinematic feel

I have been considering getting an ultrawide 1440p monitor, but I am not sure how well a GTX 970 would run games on it. Should I upgrade GPU first?

Does anyone use a curved ultrawide screen? I'm curious how much of a difference it makes.

Starting to see more and more games NOT supporting 21:9. This is not the way I expected it to go.

Dark Souls 3

Doom (beta)

Ugh. I absolutely hate playing Dark Souls 3 in 16:9. Kinda want to stop and wait for an ultrawide fix.

Why can't you use Flawless Widescreen or something for those games?

battleborn does 21:9

It sucks that doom doesn't ... I don't imagine it would be hard for devs to add

The Doom beta actually does support 21:9, albeit it can't be selected from the in-game menu.

For 3440x1440 for example, you have to configure it from Steam with these launch properties:
+set r_customwidth 3440 +set r_customheight 1440

What rez? 3440x1440? I upgraded from my old 780ti which is close to performance with a 970 to a 980ti just for my 21:9 3440x1440 screen and its just about cuts it.

Yes, 3440x1440. Do you think 970 (overclocked) could get at least 30fps? I plan on upgrading once Pascal is announced, but I may need a new monitor before then.

Support is added on a game by game basis

so you cannot just edit config files for every game? Shame, considering I mostly play Souls games.

After a google search concerning DS3, apparently the game will glitch and show the full 21:9 aspect ratio. https://www.reddit.com/r/darksouls3...en_unexplained_3440_x_1440_ultrawide_support/

the redditor's DS3 ultrawide screenshots are here http://imgur.com/a/YdGQl
I personally wouldn't consider any of the images as spoilery.

I guess the running theory is that the game actually renders everything in 21:9 but then covers the edges with black bars. FromSoft makes my favorite games but their technical work is just embarrassing.

21:9 Dark Souls is best Dark Souls

I've tried DS3 on ultrawide at launch, didn't work and I forgot all about it. Now there's that fix but it's about editing the exe...

The odds of being banned over it are pretty high, aren't they?

It totally is. The game feels soooo much better now. Not sure why they can't just support it out of the box.....

The trade-off is that you SHOULD probably play offline. Not sure though. I was never banned for doing the same thing in Dark Souls 2... but I'm sure it's a possibility.

Obviously it probably is safer to play offline, yeah, but I kinda just said fuck it a few days ago and have been playing online with the hex edit. No ban yet

Yes, quite high I would say. A checksum of the executable is the single easiest rule for an anti-cheat system to enforce.

Fortunately, I wrote this:

It still modifies the game's memory (8 bytes) at application start, but it really functions no different than any overlay software would. And it's pretty much patch proof, at least until From fixes the bug that the solution is based on :P

So DP 1.3 is right behind the corner. You'd think Asus, Acer and others would be announcing a slew of new 21:9 1440p monitors that go higher than 100hz. I'm not seeing it. Is it too early? Is IPS tech not there yet? What gives?

I'm sure we will hear things at Computex at the end of May.

Doubt it. I haven't seen a single report from people even getting the first warning by using that fix, let alone actually getting banned

Is that Asus monitor really made out of titanium? Or is it just the color of the plastic, the anandtech article makes it sound like it's actually made of metal.

The new display uses the new ASUS ROG color scheme — plasma copper inlays on armor titanium casing as well as an LED effect on the bottom. The monitor also has an ultra-thin frame (which ASUS calls frameless design) as well as tilt, swivel, and height adjustments. Eventually, other ROG-branded displays will inherit similar design and color scheme.

The article doesn't make it sound like it's actually made of metal.
Plus, titanium is very hard to work with, using it to build any substantial part of a cheap computer display would be insane.

Sorry for the late reply, yes 970 should cut it for 30fps ultra in nearly all games

The Asus PG348Q is finally widely available in USA.

My Microcenter has 5 in stock at $1300 a piece.

Thanks for the heads up just picked one up at the Dallas Micro Center. They had 8 of them. Once I get settled, I will take pictures and post. If anyone wants a picture or info of anything specific let me know.

Thanks, let us know if the lower bezel is metal/titanium or just plastic.

Looks to be brushed Aluminum / metal

This thing is gorgeous. My goodness almost hate mounting it on the Vesa mount. Although the metal connection for lighting does stick out close to the Vesa mounting point. I will have to mess around with it a bit.

how does non-native (3440x1440) resolutions look if you were forced to lower it in games to get decent frames? I stil like the concept of ultra wide for things like movies and im looking to purchase one soon (yay tax returns)

Changed my 16:9 monitor resolution to mimic 21:9 and it sure does look weird. I can image it feels much more proper on an actual 21:9 monitor.

I really want one but I also plan on Twitch streaming and I could imagine the game would look like shit for a viewer (21:9 on a 16:9 player).

On the other hand, you can stuff the empty space with a bunch of bullshit like donation tickers and chat.

Or maybe you could stream at 21:9 and captivate a niche ultrawide streaming audience (since it fullscreen fills out the whole screen if the stream output is 21:9).

The Asus comes with a program called MultiFrame that does a good job pushing the full browser or program to specific areas of the monitor. Right now I have a 2X2 going.

Overwatch doesn't support 21:9 unfortunately and their reasoning is bizzare to say the least. If CS-GO allows 21:9 you have no right to say it is due to competitive reasons.

The Heroes of the Storm team cracked recently. I expect the Overwatch team won't hold out for too long.

Yea, new games not supporting 21:9 is getting pretty old. Had to wait awhile before Fallout 4 was even remotely playable. Been using the LG 34UM94 since August 2014 though and it is sweet. Only problem I have is the monitor doesn't seem to go to sleep when the computer does. So it constantly connects/disconnects to the computer when it's in sleep mode. Not a big deal, I just turn the computer off instead of leaving it on.

Hi everyone. Will you take advantage of the 1070/1080 Pascal chips for 21:9/1440p gaming ? How are you feeling about it ?
Im on a 980Ti, I'll wait for a 1080Ti. As it stands my 980ti just about cuts it @3440x1440, witcher 3 is 50-60fps on mostly ultra, same with GTAV and MGS5

Hi Guys,

Been looking at Ultrawides for a while now. Been watching the recent reviews of the LG34UC98. I've always been concerned about the backlight bleed issues with curved ultrawides but the reviews sofar seem pretty solid, LG seem to have sorted the backlight bleed issues with this years monitors (as they should for the price of these things), I saw that Amazon UK only just got some stock in the past week, so I decided to take the plunge today! Should be here tomorrow, I can't wait!

I still can't believe the Diablo 3 team apparently considers 21:9 an exploit. Or at least did in 2013. :\

Clearly they don't consider it an exploit as you've always been able to play the game at any aspect ratio. If they cared, they'd remove support for it.

If they don't add it to Overwatch, it's probably because they don't want to test\debug the game at that aspect ratio and fix any potential problems. The "unfair" defense is just convenient... but also BS when plenty of other competitive games support it just fine.
