Well the first season kept me watching for 15 straight hours and got me hooked on the show so I can't relate.
Also no way in hell it's worse than season 6.

I don't think smarter is quite right. It has a different focus for sure, and that has its own strengths and weaknesses. I haven't watched enough 24 to make a call, but Homeland seems a bit more character focused over action. Not that 24 doesn't have their drama. It just has far more action and drive.

It is. There's no list. Start from the beginning, enjoy the ride. It's all worthwhile. 24 is the GOAT.
There are eight seasons that run for 24 episodes. They are Seasons 1-8 and go in chronological order. Generally, the consensus is that the first five seasons are pretty good, the sixth season is trash, and Seasons 7-8 are hit-or-miss.
There was a 12-episode season that came after, dubbed 24: Live Another Day, that came out a couple years after the series concluded and wrapped up some lingering plots from the first eight seasons (along with Jack's character).
And Legacy takes place after all that, in the same continuity, but with almost entirely new cast.

Me too, I'm in the same boat...
Close to my ranking, though I'd probably shuffle 1-4 around. They are all equally entertaining and practically on the same footing despite flaws here and there, so it's kind of a wash with those. Been too long to even argue the finer details of each anyway. 5 deserves the top spot no doubt.
I also fizzled out during 8, but even what I did watch was still superior to the entirety of 6. What a complete mess that was coming off 5. 7 had issues, but fem-Bauer helped elevate it. Wish I stuck with 8 longer given comments.
Oh and I am literally watching episode 1 of live another day right now.

I enjoyed it. Could have done without the silly pipe scene, but I saw it coming as soon as the camera showed it dangling there, so I prepared myself. Anyway, definitely feels like 24; a top figure of CTU has already been tasered, so we're well on our way!
Also, I've never minded the teen/kid story lines. To me, that kinda brings the show back down to Earth from all of the over-the-topness.
And if you haven't seen 24 at all, boy have you been missing out.

Yep, this was definitely 24. SHE TASERED THE DIRECTOR OF CTU IN THE NECK AT CTU. It really doesn't get anymore 24 than that. CTU analysts bickering and making passive aggressive comments about computer proficiency, several laws have already been broken, and Eric has racked up a decent body count.
I'm actually glad to have this back. Enjoyed the first episode far more than I expected to. It's silly and pulpy but the TV equivalent of comfort food. And I like Eric so far too as a protagonist. He looks incredibly young but I can buy that if he just got out of the service. The dynamic with his brother is a decent angle too.

Just because a list of a group of seal team got out does not mean you can't trust ANYONE at any agency anymore that is so stupid plot thing that 24 always has.......

There's was one particular shot I like. It was the one where the camera follows Eric and his wife to his truck. The camera moves into the backseat even though we don't see the second door at all. It was done pretty seamlessly. The crew had probably a few seconds to remove that door before the camera man moves into the back seat.

Jump in. Almost everything is new, it's meant to grab a new audience.
I noticed this too. The direction was better than your average episode of 24. Fair amount of long takes, which I loved.

It was a rushed first episode compared to previous seasons (despite being 'real time' lol), but given how critical it is to hook viewers in on the first episode of a network TV show, it's no surprise. I'm sure it'll calm down a little and return to the usual 24 pace after this.

I just finished watching the first episode and this is really like the good old 24.
Also Kathryn Prescott is in this, so this is nice to me.

It's exciting to watch, but I hate what it did to Jack's character. Not that he was exceptionally deep to begin with, but at least I cared about him in the past.
Yeah...that was actually one of the more engaging plot point in this.
But it was kinda believable a break in character

And, to be fair, it was originally intended to be the big, final climax for Bauer. LAD wasn't on the cards at that point, and this was the farewell.
And also, it kinda felt just like a natural progression of the end of Series 1 when he thought
Teri and Kim had been killed and went rampaging / killed brutally the Dreizens

i never watched the original 24 so i cant compare the two.
When i watched this, it seemed decent, but i couldn't really care about all of the plots going around. Guys just happening to run around with SMGs and noone cares?
I'll give it another shot as tonight's episode will bring in some more meat. Issac plotline is funny though lmao

There's no titular bad guy yet, so I doubt it.
I don't know. It was kinda entertaining on a guilty pleasure level but man, the subplots are BAD in this. Terrible acting abounds, especially in the godawful high school plot. Most 24 season premieres are better than this. Or maybe that's just nostalgia talking. Even Sean Callery seemed asleep (at least until the last five minutes).
On the bright side, I'm no longer as worried about the Bauer replacement. He's not exactly compelling as a character but he has presence and can clearly handle the action scenes. I'll give it another episode or two but if this is the best they can come up with, I doubt I'll stick around.

To be fair, most seasons of 24 aired a 2 hour premiere, and another 2 hours the following night. The big things usually happened in the second hour of both nights, which will air tonight. Hopefully they bring in the big stuff.

Solid proof of concept that, yes, 24 isn't really married to the Bauer character. Currently feels like a strong break-away from the old series, clearly enough connected but also quite different. It also has more of a Season 1/2 feel, a little more intimate and immediately about the characters (at least for now) than an America-ending threat. All of which is good.
A good opener can of course go off the rails (never forget 24 Season 6, jeez) but imo this is the strongest opener for the show in years and has me really pumped/excited. I'm keen to see the new stuff develop and also looking forward to more of the old show creeping in over time. It feels like the good kind of soft reboot right now.
I thought LAD was okay, but one of the sad/weird things about it is I think the 24 universe would've been in a better place for this soft reboot now had it never happened, at least plot-wise. Where that led Jack, Chloe, Heller and Audrey in particular never really rang true for me, though Kate was a good addition to the show's roster of characters and could be a great character to bring back if Legacy goes for a second season or whatever. I liked it at the time, but when I think about it LAD didn't really have much to offer other than the cool but grossly under-utilized London setting and a fairly cringey, heavy-handed (even by 24 standards) drone 'ripped from the headlines' thing.
