360 launch: Where are the duds?

You wouldn't even believe how many pre-launch TeamXboxers were putting Shrek, Bruce Lee, Kabuki Warriors, Nightcaster, and Azurik on their must-own lists.

This launch eliminates the fear of the unknown, because we've played games just like pretty much everything on this list.

my guess is amped 3 is going to be the mediocre game of the bunch

and gun is going to suck.

same with tony hawk.. the formula is just too bland... and with the visuals barely seeing any improvement... yea... i dont think we'll be seeing anything but 6's or 7's

the wild card... frame city killer... it could be good... just based on it's premise (max payne + grand theft auto = frame city killer) alone and some movies impressed the hell out of me.

but there's so much unseen... it could end up being very boring.

saints row is another game that could suck... because it's trying to take the gta formula to the next level... it could do things right... or fuck up big time.

*spoojes*

Full armor sets? OMG. That one looks amazing also. I can't wait to get this game. I've never played an Elder Scrolls game on a console but I think i'll take the simplified controls (because of the 360 controller instead of a Keyboard) with open arms.

I'm a HUGE fan of Stealth Pickpocketing. Unsavory...yes...strangley fullfilling? very.

Every game that comes up before the launch of a new system appears to look great until the games are actually released. Chances are, one or two of those games that is sure to be a hit will fail to live up to expectations. Perfect Dark has that chance.

There will probably be two or three bombs on the 360 before the first month or two of the system has passed. Which games they might be will determine whether or not Microsoft has a good showing.

I think the better question is how many games released at launch that are pretty good then will still be considered pretty good in 2 years. I'm guessing it'll be far less.

You can say that for any launch. Heck, pick any point in time and you can say that about most games.

Am I the only one who thinks Gun looks like fun for a current gen title? :D

Maybe I'm just overly fond of the Max Payne/Punisher gameplay.

I think GUN even though it's not making use of the Xbox 360's graphics capabilities still looks like it could be a really fun game, more so than a lot of the other Xbox 360 games which people think look good. I don't like the fact that people say GUN is going to be a dud just because they don't like the graphics. Same with THAW, I don't like the graphics or even the series at all, but the game has already been reviewed for other systems and gotten decent reviews. THAW has an 87% rating right now according to Gamerankings. If that really was the worst game at launch, that would be an amazing launch.

An extremely lazy port is very different from a very bad game. People seem to be mixing the two up here.

Oblivion (like Morrowind) will likely be the longest, most content-rich RPG released next generation.

As long as Bethesda keeps the framerate up and the bugs down, this is the 360 game to own.

Only if you enjoy monotony.

I don't think there are any huge "duds" (i.e scoring like 3.0 or something), but to me Tony Hawk is probably the worst of the bunch. It's a mediocre game on current gen systems that seems basically the same on X360 with ten dollars added to the price tag.

BTW, not to defend it or anything, but I don't think NFS: Most Wanted is a port per se. I think it was built for X360 (whether that makes it more or less impressive, I don't know)

Let's get ruthless with this lineup:

Current-gen console Port:
Need for Speed Most Wanted (Electronic Arts / EA Canada)
Peter Jackson's King Kong (Ubisoft / Ubisoft Montreal)
Gun / THAW2

PC Port:
Call of Duty 2 (Activision/Infinity Ward)
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (2K Games / Bethesda Softworks)

Looks inferior to FEAR:
Condemned: Criminal Origins (Sega / Monolith)

Not a significant enough advance over last gen's game:
Dead or Alive 4 (Tecmo / Team Ninja)
Project Gotham Racing 3 (Microsoft Game Studios /Bizarre Creations)

RARE LOL:
Kameo: Elements of Power (Microsoft Game Studios / Rare Ltd.)
Perfect Dark Zero (Microsoft Game Studios / Rare Ltd.)

Half-featured sports games:
Madden NFL 06 (Electronic Arts / EA Tiburon)
NBA 2K6 (2K Sports / Visual Concepts)
NBA Live 06 (Electronic Arts / EA Canada)

Now, this is playing devil's advocate, but you can see that they all have their pitfalls.

(Potentially) Flawed != duds.

The duds are the trully awful games that ride the coat tails of the system launch where absolutely anything can sell a decent amount of copies.

Theres no duds in that line up, all those games will have at least some merit.

The 1st big 360 duds i rekon, will be Frame City Killers, and probably Amped 3, i havent heard a single good thing about Amped 3.

I wouldn't mind something along the lines of Fantavision to spice up this line-up. There's nothing there to diversify from the "100% testosterone" / "Xdude Xtreme" theme, which I was under the impression Microsoft intended to do.

:lol best lineup ever. Fanboys are like this. Not any different now.

OK everyone gay for Blue Stinger...pretend I said "PenPen Tricelon"

The best part of Blue Stinger was the highly homoerotic bath scene.

Now stop defending sub-par titles and get on with the thread. I'm glad I didn't put That's So Raven now. :lol

Leave PEN PEN out of this. Some of the best Dreamcast graphics ever. some of those 2D sprites on the haunted house level looked like I was watching TV.

I can't see how you guys are saying the X360 launch looks like the best ever when there isn't one OMFGWTFBBQ!!?!? game among the bunch. No Halo. No SSX. No Mario 64. No Wipeout Pure. No Soul Calibur. While there might not be a true dud in there (depending on your definition of dud), there certainly aren't really and truly great games (from the looks of it).

I would rate higher a launch with 2-3 AAAAA titles and 10 shit ones than 9 average titles and 3 below average ones.

"Buy an XBox360! Our titles are alright!"

Uh.... No.

PGR3 = AAA
Kameo = AAA
Oblivion = AAA

Just to name a few.

And all of those games >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Any SSX title.

I don't think any of these games qualify as a Soul Calibur, or a Mario 64 though...

AAA doesn't just mean "the best game available on a system".

Halo 3 would be AAA.

ehh. from what I've seen, and sentiment from others, those are not games that will blow people away. And SSX (the original) I guess I should qualify hasn't held up well, but when it was released in 2000 the scope and graphics of it were pretty near unparalleled. When you saw SSX, there was NO question it was a next-gen game.

X360 launch seemingly doesn't have anything like that. Good games but none most people will be sitting in front of thinking "This can only be done by a next-gen machine."

exactly. I am not ripping on X360 at all or even its lineup in general. but to call it the best launch ever, or even suggest that there is a single system seller in the group is reaching a bit. I guess I commend MS for not letting there be a single absolute shit title in the launch, but when you have a $400 system and games $50-60 a pop, I guess that commendation just isn't enough this time. They need the system seller IMHO more than any other system in gaming history (maybe except for the $250 PSP handheld, which at least had Ridge Racers, Wipeout Pure, and Lumines)

The 360 launch titles are looking good, but I think I'll wait to get my hands on finished content before I declare it the best launch (omg) ever.

It does look strong though.

Soul Calibur was available at US launch. When people talk about DC's great launch lineup, they're referring to the US launch.

I'm pretty sure SSX was in the same boat.

I bought Soul Calibur (and NFL2K, Blue Stinger, Sonic Adventure, Ready 2 Rumble, and VF3TB) at launch with my DC, SSX (and TTT) at launch with my PS2, and passed on Wipeout Pure in the store for MGA (uggh) and Lumines. So history disagrees with you unless you are talking about JPN launches, which would be a silly comparison being we are talking about the US X360 launch.

WTF is the deal with the Fantavision hate?!?!?! And the duds? What EA titles are part of the launch again? ;)

Yes they would. They're among the best in a genre, and will sell because of that.

You mean except for PGR3? Oblivion? NBA 2K6?

Seriously, what the heck are you guys talking about?

The Xbox 360 launch STOMPS

-the PS2 launch
-the Dreamcast launch
-the N64 launch
-The Gamecube launch

Whatever you can throw at it.

Is this the N64 "I didn't want many games anyway" philosophy or something? Do you hate great, excellent looking games?

Delay the Xbox360 one year and you'll get an amazing never seen before launch.

I get your point, but I do not agree.

The launch games are great so far, whether they will (ultimately) be Quadruple A titles will depend on how the eventually play.

ehh... it wasn't really delayed by a year as much as it was released WAY early in JPN. When you only launch with three titles and don't get more than 2-3 titles over the next 2-3 months, you may have launched early.

Hey, the DS launched with a rerelease of this classic Mario 64 title. It must have rekindled the magic of the best system launch ever!
