360 launch: Where are the duds?

HokieJoe said:
Even though the commercial looks pretty cool, Gun just s c r e a m s dud to me. I don't know, maybe the game plays well, but it looks very this-gen to me so far.

Well yeah, that's because it's a shitty port.....same with Tony Hawk. Activision didn't design these games for the 360 and it shows. Lazy developing

Unison said:
Plenty of people in this very thread were happy to point out the duds, but you couldn't see them through your 360 goggles.
Sorry bud. The joke's on you. Every launch game thus far has a Gamerankings average of 70% or more. Nothing remotely in "dud" territory.

I don't know whether its the greatest launch ever, but it's the most dud-free launch ever.

Next up: PS2 Non-duds for the year 2000

1. SSX PS2 EA Sports Big 62 8.4 91.8% 91.5%
2. Madden NFL 2001 PS2 EA Sports 48 7.9 89.5% 89.4%
3. DOA2: Hardcore PS2 Tecmo 34 7.8 86.5% 86.4%

But, the definition of "dud" at the start of this thread is Blue Stinger, which has a 71% at Gamerankings!

:lol

Yes that was one of them. Now list the rest I named... :lol

I can smell you desperation here.

My whole issue was with your assertion is that Blue Stinger was a shitty game at the time, really.

Thus proving that there is always someone to champion every title. :D

5th post in the thread. Did I hurt your feelings?

Again, you want to bump this and play the game? THen play the game...list all the titles.

Go ahead and drop your precious Blue Stinger off the list then. You have my permission.

It's nothing personal... It's just seemingly moronic to argue that games like TH & Gun are anything but shovelware. . .

thats true but any tony hawk game is worth playing just for the music, that leaves GUN out in the cold.

There's nothing I can say to that.

We found some mediocrity, but none of the crap that usually comes with launches. Still no Azuriks, Universal Studios Theme Parks, or Kabuki Warriors.

Hindsight is 20/20, so why did you bump this thread?

I would nominate the Activision/Neversoft shovelware (Tony Hawk, GUN) as the crap games of this launch. I haven't seen Amped but I bet that will also qualify (to be fair, I've only played the first one and thought it was utter shit).

C'mon, those ports are the worst kind. I'd liken them to "Test Drive 6 for the Dreamcast" levels of mediocrity - just as TD6 was simply the PS1 version in hi-res, so too are these games just the PS2 versions in hi-res. They would be completely pointless if the Xbox 1 versions ran on the Xbox 360!

There are only two new games in the entire lineup (Condemned, Kameo) off the top of my head, and a lot of the games are multiplatform (EA Sports, 2K Sports) - the 2K Sports games, as I understand it, only received graphical updates, and play exactly the same as the existing current gen versions!

There really isn't a lot that's "something you can only experience on Xbox 360" at launch, aside from the pretty graphics. Which, although understandable, is rather disappointing...especially since system launches are usually when publishers like to roll out new IP and build franchises...

Note: It's not like I hate the Xbox 360. I'm definitely getting one at launch because I'm crazy like that, but this is definitely not the "greatest launch ever."

We've covered all of that. And its not what the thread is about really.

Heh, I suppose you are right.

So let's put it this way, this is the most mediocre launch ever!

Don't any of you find the lack of new IP disturbing? Well, at least we're getting Saints Row, The Outfit, and Frame City Killer later, as far as new IP. But it makes me wonder if publishers are not treating this as the real beginning of the next generation...

BULLSHIT.

Launches are about sequels and ports. The for the most part new IPs don't sell until you have a HUGE audience so why bother?

Well, historically new IPs are typically introduced at system launch because if they are successful, they can be built into franchises. They get a lot of mindshare because with only a dozen or so games to choose from, people pay attention to them even if version 1.0 doesn't sell a bajillion copies because there aren't enough machines to go round. For an example, see SSX.

Why am I calling this the most mediocre launch ever? I'm actually agreeing with you - there aren't too many totally crap games in the lineup. Similarly, there don't seem to be any stellar games in the lineup either...just a lot of ok to good games, with a couple of AA games (but nothing like Halo, or Mario 64)...isn't that the definition of mediocre? Not really good, not really bad either? (OK, to be fair, mediocre has a negative connotation...so maybe this is really the most AVERAGE lineup ever...)

Where are the memorable, machine defining games? All i see are sequels and second rate platformers.

Not an attack on the xboys, but there is nothing that sticks out and says "FUCKING XBOX 360 MAN!" They really need a Halo 3 at launch (I know halo is a sequel too, but it is part of a franchise which really defines XBOX)

It's called a fact.

Say it with me now.

"Fact."

You seem like a very hateful poster. While this thread may have been an unintentional bitch fest overall, you're just here to cause problems and play one up testosterone games.

Poor form.

Kameo, Condemned and King Kong all beg to differ. This launch has its fair share of "New IP" with a bunch more rolling out in the next few months.

If you're going to be honest, the only thing you can criticize about the launch is that there is "no Halo."

The problem with that argument is that no console ever launched with a Halo before Xbox (i.e. a groundbreaking new franchise), and none has since. It is simply not reasonable to expect it in a launch game.

Consoles have had King Kong derivatives in launch window since the NES, if not the Colecovision, and Kameo was originally, what, a N64 game?

The X360 certainly lineup isn't completely devoid of fresh properties, but for whatever business reasons they seem to be aimed for shortly postlaunch.

So the characters and concept have been shopped around a bit too much to qualify as "fresh and new", not to mention suspiciously long for things that ideally should be appealing in and of themselves.

While it's certainly the first example of Kameo as a standalone title, the fact remains that we would've been playing the same game in the late '90s as "Banjo and Kazooie do Kameo" if collectathon sales hadn't have dived into the shitter, and in that it's treading a bit close to the line to be listed as an example of innovation.

I think many of you are missing the thread starter's point, which is that in the 360 launch lineup, you'll be hard pressed to find utterly unplayable or sub 70% games. That's a big deal, imo, because you won't have too many dissapointed gamers out there no matter which games they buy.

One thing's for sure, we don't have a system seller title like halo this time around. To be honest, I would much rather have 2-3 amazing games as well as some really poor games in the line up than to have a (mediocre) launch free of duds and AAA titles. Afterall I only need 2-3 games at launch, so I really don't care if some games score 3/10, but at the same time it's important to have triple A original titles....

Seriously, I thought I covered that? OK, silly list time. Please help me fill in the blanks...

Starting from "you can only experience this on Xbox 360" to least, we have...

New IP:
Kameo
Condemned

(Console) Exclusive sequel in an existing franchise:
Perfect Dark Zero
Project Gotham Racing 3
DOA4
Amped 3
Call of Duty 2
Quake 4
Ridge Racer 6

Multiplatform port with enhanced graphics:
King Kong (does this really have new content aside from better graphics on Xbox 360?)
Madden
FIFA
NBA Live
Tiger Woods
Need For Speed
NBA 2k6
NHL 2k6

Multiplatform port with minimal enhancements:
Gun
Tony Hawk

Don't get me wrong. I am totally cool with the games in the first two lists! I'm not against sequels, especially exclusive ones, when you're trying to answer the question "hey, is this console worth $400 to pick up right now?" But I'm just saying, to the people praising this as the best launch lineup ever...about half the lineup is multiplatform stuff with a new coat of paint, doesn't that bother you guys at all? Honestly, I'd rather have some genuine turds mixed in there that at least tried to take some risks than this safe, PAINFULLY AVERAGE stuff that's being pushed at us, but maybe it's just me?
