3DS XL First Impressions/Previews

I'm sorry if it has already been answered before, but is the blue one actually blue like it appears on the internet? I ask because the Aqua Blue 3DS has issues being photographed/videotaped properly and looks very teal in person.

From what little I paid attention to it at Comic-Con, yes, it's actual blue like you'd think it would be.

Tried it in GAME today, screen is massive and very striking in person.

- Colours are exactly the same, they aren't more vivid.
- Face buttons are the same, so is the Circle Pad.
- L and R feel nicer and more satisfying on the XL.
- 3D is no different to before, same effect exactly.
- Didn't like the new Start/Home/Select buttons, they don't feel good.
- I definitely noticed the image looked worse on the XL while playing Mario 3DS (more in your face jaggies), not enough to be a turn off, but it will be for some people (my girlfriend felt the resolution suffered more than I did).
- Top half (not the screen) looks cheap for some reason, but the lack of fingerprints is a very good thing.

Overall, sticking with my original for the time being.

Thanks

Always appreciate impressions that aren't just automatically glowing

Oh god I saw an unboxing of the blue XL and I dunno. It won't match with the rest of my set up where my 3DS sits (it's a whole silver and black look), but it looks pretty good. Not as godly as the aqua blue 3DS but still decent.

Hold out for silver, or get blue... UGH.

th my original for the time being.

This is my concern. Though several impressions said it looked better, even saying it looked like some filters were being used, but Nintendo has said no. I'm sure it won't be that bad, just don't have the screen so close to your eyes. Sometimes I wish these handhelds had sharpness controls, cause that helps hide jaggies. If I can deal with playing my PS2 on my HDTV, I should be fine with this much smaller screen size.

This is a "true" 3DS revision, whatever that means... Also, I'm fairly certain there will never ever be a 3DS Lite. The OG 3DS is probably as small as it's going to get. There's just nothing to shave off from the machine, really.

Given Nintendo's track record, I fully expect another revision in the next couple years. You may not think there's anything they can do to the system, but their R&D is constantly playing around with new ideas.

Starting from the current 3DS model they could make the unit ever-so-slightly larger (not XL large, I'm talking add a few mm to the width and height,) replace the Select/Home/Start panel with thin physical buttons, and reduce the thickness of the lower screen bezel. All of this should allow for slightly larger screens (like the difference between DS Lite and DSi.) They could also toss out the "sandwich" aesthetic and instead make it like a smaller version of the XL's smooth-edged look, which would add to the comfort factor. Update the 3D slider to the XL's, etc.

Those are just a few things I can think of without any drastic changes, but a simple timeline of Nintendo's handheld revisions should be evidence enough that they'll probably have something new for us to buy in 2-3 years tops. I don't think they've gone over 3 years without releasing a new handheld product since the GameBoy Pocket was released, and I really don't see why that should change now just because the average joe can't think of any improvements they could make on it.

So when will GBA games appear on the E-store (Ambassador games doesn't count)? They are coming right? Not even Nintendo could drop the ball that hard.

With the ambassador GBA games they said they have no intention of releasing these games on eShop at a later date (which is Nintendo code for: if we're working on it, we're not telling you yet.) But when we're still waiting for most of the GB/GBC/GG library to trickle down, plus ever since they added NES games to 3DS VC those have been trickling in at the expense of other VC releases. I'd say they could keep this up for a good couple years without adding any more systems, so it's really just a matter of if and when they decide to do it.

TLDR; Don't hold your breath.

I'm happy I pre-ordered the blue one, looks really good.
Now the sad thing is that I pre-ordered KH3D with my 3DS XL so I'll have to wait before I can play it. But the wait will be worth it, I want to play KH on the big screen :)
Can't wait for 27/07.

It would be nice if the 3DS were capable of edge filtering like FXAA. I doubt it is, and even if it were, it would have to be coded from scratch and would only be appreciated by a limited audience.

I would imagine that, in several years time, they could trim down the internals of the system enough to accommodate a larger battery. The overall size wouldn't change significantly, but the form factor would. They might also opt for an improved screen (thinner, better color reproduction, larger sweet spot, etc), if they can integrate one that still turns a profit. Basically, they would do just enough to incentivize an upgrade for those who don't want a larger handheld.

I just preordered mine. This hread got me badly hyped.
I lent my 3ds to a friend I wont see till agust after xl launch. If I play a new game on the new one and then I do the transfer thing from the old one... will the saves on the newp one be lost?

Preordered a Blue from the Nintendo World Store in NYC. No Midnight sales but they always do something ridiculous for launches. New Super Mario Bros 2 and the XL on the same day will make it a CIRCUS there. Free swaaaag!

Hmm.... I prefer the original for the portability. Perfect sIze for a handheld. XL is too stinkin big.

The thing is, it really isn't that much bigger. There just is more screen and less bezel. I also can't recall the last time that i've had my psp/ds/3ds/vita in my pockets though.

That's for my wallet and iphone.

I played with one of these at comic con this weekend (picked up some Kid Icarus cards. yessss) and fuuuucccckkk that screen is so big and nice. I just wanted to buy one there.

My problem with this is that the face buttons arent the same, so if you can't tell even that...how valid is the rest of what you wrote?

So my kid turns six this month and he asked me for a 3ds, i told him he should wait one more month to get the new version and he was cool with it, my mother in law bought the current version yesterday :( i was really excited to get those nice big screens.

I'm going to have to ban myself from this thread, this is too much. *drool*

Inform her that the gift is fantastic but sadly the small screen is bad for six year old eyes, and the newer version is for all ages. :P

How's the video/camera quality on this thing? Still terrible?

Yes, it's the same hardware.

It's a complimentary model like DSi XL, GB micro or PSP Go. Not a full revision like GBA SP, DS Lite or PSP2000/3000.

I wouldn't rule out a future SP/Lite style revision that improves the screen either, both in regular and XL flavors. It's going to be a ways off though, maybe using OLED.

Screw pixel density! it looks really good

Couldn't agree more with all of you guys. I actually haven't finished this game, and now I can't wait to get back into it with that beautiful display! I kinda wish I hadn't beaten all of 3D Land as well so that I could have a good reason to play it on the XL for a long time, but I guess I could just start a new file and attempt at getting those blinking 5 stars on a save file.

I don't know, sometimes I play 3D Land and after I'm done with a certain mission I'm so excited that I never have to play that level/mission again, so it's gonna take a lot of thinking before I accept that idea... After you beat every level twice (Mario and Luigi each) and get the gold flag, and unlock the special crown stage, it took me about 200 attempts to beat it (I don't know how people even manage without the tanooki suit). After I beat it, I thought to myself that I was done, but forgot that I had to beat it with Luigi... fuhhhhhhh... but unlike I expected, I beat it with Luigi on my first attempt, haha! So, I don't know, I'll consider it.

And while I'm on this topic, I think I'd much rather have a Super Mario 3D Land 2 over New Super Mario Bros. 2. And to go even further off, I'd love a true Super Mario 64 sequel over any Galaxy game any day.

Thanks

No problem mate, those are just honest opinions.

The screen is bloody nice, but visuals definitely don't look better, at best... They look the same. I went back and tried it today and I noticed that things like text look noticeably worse on the XL.

My problem with this is that the face buttons arent the same, so if you can't tell even that...how valid is the rest of what you wrote?

I'm not interested in who agrees with me really. I just posted some impressions (they felt exactly the same to me), you make your own mind up. Would it have been more valid to you if I wrote more positive stuff?

The best deal in Canada for a 3DS XL is Futureshop with the $20 credit? I'm ready to pull the trigger. Just wondering what my best option is.

I'm torn. I never got a 3DS, and am pretty hyped for this.

However, if I gene on launch, will I regret it when the white comes out? White may not even come out.....argh.

And which do I get? I,ve always believed that plain colours like silver are best... They at be boring initially, but the classicness holds out better should I get bored witha coloured one. That said silver seems kinda....retro. I like How it invokes the original DS....but it seems a bit off. I dunno. And red would be nice if it weren't metallic.

Funny, I was reding this thread and just laughing at all the 'colour' dilemmas. But it hit me too.

What colours are being released in US?

Bah maybe silver, may's it's mor or less a tradition for my old Nintendo handhelds. Had a silver DS, GBASP, pocket, micro.... I don't know why this is bugging me so much.

I don't think he,s saying it would be more valid if it were more positive, just saying that he feels the buttons are different.

Ok think I'm about to I'm about to pull the trigger this evening on a blue XL via the sainsbury's deal, along with Zelda:OoT (which I have never played!), Mario 3D land, Pokemon black plus possibly a bunch of other cheap DS games since I only used the system for about a year (recommendations?), and possibly new super mario bros. 2 depending on how much money I have left.

One last question, will my old DS fat charger work with this thing, or will I need to buy a new one?

The large screen is a blessing and a curse in a way. A blessing because big means more immersive, and to me the 3D effect was more pronounced. And it's about the size of the vita screen so it's really good.

But, because it's about the size of the vita screen, you sort of wish there was a little more oomph under the hood, and maybe a bit more resolution. If you're a Nintendo fan you'll soon come to peace with that though and love it for what it is. And mario kart looks fantastic on it.

Didn't see this posted, so...

From 7/20/12 to 7/22/12, GameStop's offering double trade-in value for consoles. That means $100 for a 3DS. If you have Power Up Rewards, then it'll be $110. I wonder how that will compare to the inevitable 3DS-to-XL trade in deal.

http://www.gamestock2012.com/DealsOfTheWeek.aspx

But that offer will be only valid from 07/20/12 - 07/22/12... It says so below the description. Anyway, I hope they have a similar deal for the launch on August 19th.

Are there any good hands-on pictures/videos out there of the Blue x Black 3DS XL? I wouldn't mind seeing what the texture and colour looks like in Non-PR Shot Land before committing to a purchase.
