3DS XL First Impressions/Previews

Been getting some hands-on time with the 3DS XL at Comic-Con, and I like it just as much as I thought I would... those screens, man.

I've been hearing rumblings, though... about certain things that won't survive the migration from an existing 3DS to a new 3DS XL. StreetPass-related things, mainly -- like game-specific StreetPass data, like Mario Kart 7 tags, Kid Icarus: Uprising weapon gems, and Theatrhythm Dark Notes. I can't imagine that StreetPass Mii Plaza data would be affected, as Nintendo knows how important StreetPass data is to so many 3DS owners, but this whole thing about certain data not making it intact to a new 3DS XL has me a bit hesitant going forward with a purchase.

Has anyone else heard anything like this?

Amazon has been selling Wii systems (the non-backwards compatible NSMBWii one) off and on for a couple of months now though, so I think this might be an issue particular to the 3DS rather than Nintendo generally.

Had a go on one of these yesterday (work in Gamestation in the UK) and I have to say I was really impressed. Had a go on Mario Kart and I didn't notice any obvious graphical problems. The bigger screens seemed really nice after spending so much time with my Vita and the overall build quality just felt sturdier to me, though that could have been as this was basically new out of the box and my comparison is a launch model 3DS which has seen quite some use. Either way I'm impressed and I'm really considering buying one now.

It's complete and utter bullshit. Please don't believe it, as it's not true.

Had a quick look at one in the local gamestation. Didn't have a game in but they put in mario kart when I asked. The screen is *huge* and makes a massive difference to the impact of the 3D. I found I could push the 3D slider all the way up without causing any eyestrain which isn't the case with the 3DS for me (I have to warm up for a while before I can push it). It really feels like a window into a world, much more so than the 3DS.

Sweetspot felt to me a little easier to hold, but it's still narrow. I did notice faint grey bands as the two images merge/cross - you can see them on 3DS as you tilt the screen left/right. They seemed fairly close together and as a result I don't think you can get a completely clear 3D image from edge to edge. Wasn't distracting at all in use though.

Very very tempted to get one day one - but not at gamestations RRP of £199 lol. I'd be happy to pay a little more because they had a demo unit for me to try, but that's way over what others are charging.

I've got mine ordered at Sainsburys entertainment online for £161.99 with free first day delivery. There's a coupon earlier on in this thread to reduce it to that amount.

£199.99 is a fucking rip off.

as usual I check amazon.it if they'll be able to send to UK
turns out they can, 189 euros=148£ circa

I think I'm gonna order from there!

What's the shipping to the UK?

Shipping to the UK is £5. Standard shipping 3-5 days. Total cost: £152. With 1-2 days, it's £161 total.

I've changed my order to Amazon. With standard shipping, it's due on the 30th July. I've ordered stuff from amazon.it and fr before to the UK, and it's always turned up within two days on basic postage. AMAZING deal!!

That blue looks amazing. I'm so conflicted - which one do I choose? Red, Blue or Silve!? Urrghh, for each video I watch I change my mind :(

It does look good, I'm still sticking with red though. I've never had a gadget that's been anything other than silver / white or black... so boring.

I think I'll hold off for a true 3DS revision, such as a Lite model..
This is a "true" 3DS revision, whatever that means... Also, I'm fairly certain there will never ever be a 3DS Lite. The OG 3DS is probably as small as it's going to get. There's just nothing to shave off from the machine, really.

So when will GBA games appear on the E-store (Ambassador games doesn't count)? They are coming right? Not even Nintendo could drop the ball that hard.

Still don't like the Blue at all. I wasn't aware it was Blue on the bottom of the case as well. Ugh.

Considering how slow and terrible Nintendo has been with VC releases on both Wii and 3DS since god knows when, I think we'll be waiting a while.

They do? I guess it depends on where you live since I ordered Rhythm Thief two days ago and they didn't charge tax for me.

Depends on the state I don't get charged tax either.

I'm going red it will match my anniversary DSiXL I got a few years ago. Wish Amazon had it but oh well going to Best Buy on launch day using a gift cert for some, then selling my other system off after transfers.

Tried it in GAME today, screen is massive and very striking in person.

- Colours are exactly the same, they aren't more vivid.
- Face buttons are the same, so is the Circle Pad.
- L and R feel nicer and more satisfying on the XL.
- 3D is no different to before, same effect exactly.
- Didn't like the new Start/Home/Select buttons, they don't feel good.
- I definitely noticed the image looked worse on the XL while playing Mario 3DS (more in your face jaggies), not enough to be a turn off, but it will be for some people (my girlfriend felt the resolution suffered more than I did).
- Top half (not the screen) looks cheap for some reason, but the lack of fingerprints is a very good thing.

Overall, sticking with my original for the time being.

3DS XL Lite! They can cut off a decent chunk of the bulk by copying the XL's curved edges, wouldn't necessarily be any smaller at the extremes than the current model but it'd feel smaller without the chunky edges. Plus it'd probably cheaper than the current model to make so they can take advantage of that for an eventual price drop.

I'm sorry if it has already been answered before, but is the blue one actually blue like it appears on the internet? I ask because the Aqua Blue 3DS has issues being photographed/videotaped properly and looks very teal in person.
