3DS XL First Impressions/Previews

I wouldn't have a problem with warmer screens if both screens had it, but with me only my top screen has it, and only when 3D is off. So it's very annoying this way because you're looking at the difference the whole time, kinda like the pics Haliela posted

That's definitely not typical. I don't suppose you can still return it? Seems like Nintendo's got a bunch of quality control issues again that hopefully work themselves out prior to me buying one.

lulz o well no xl for me.. I want it for a flat 200 bones... already got fucked for buying the first one for 350... lol for one game. I'll just wait awhile.

Couldn't return it at the store, and Nintendo didn't want to do anything about it saying it's normal. If I pushed a bit more I could've gotten a refund but I eventually kept it since I already did a system transfer and some people tell me that it'll fade away after time (glue setting in or something). I'll wait it out for now, it's not as bad as most people think but it's there and if you're picky you'll notice it
 
Its kind of meaningless posting pictures. First your camera can affect how cool/warm it looks depending on the white balance.nthen each of us probably has slightly different colour settings on our screens so we view it differently. I guess as long as you take a photo and view it on your own computer to check it accurately shows what you see in real life, that'd be ok.

While I prefer the look of the XL, the original still can look pretty damn good imo! Depends on lighting..

it does look good, but after some fingerprints all over that... stuff looks less pleasant.

I agree. My biggest gripe with the design of the original is the shiny plastic. I hate shiny plastic. After using the Vita for a short time after wiping it down it looks like complete garbage. Smudges ALL OVER the damn thing and all over the screen. It's terrible. After hearing they went with matte on the XL I was pleased.

My copy is eagerly awaiting my XL. It's sitting ever so patiently in its game case just begging to be played. This week is going to be awful.... a whole work week separates me from XL goodness.

I played an XL today in a GAME store which they had on demo, sat right next to a regular 3DS.

The colour was great, the displays are HUGE (probably partly because the bezel is not all-encompassing) and the resolution is not an issue; it's just like having two different sized TVs with the same resolution.

The 3D definitely seemed easier to view, and smoother too. Much more comfortable to hold and didn't notice the extra weight.

I want one of these bad.

If you tap power-saving mode OFF, battery life will be shortened and the screen will maintain the level of brightness that you set. (The default setting is off.)"
 
How are the brightness levels? Is 5 really bright? I know we probably won't be able to play outside in the daylight, though the anti-reflective screen might help somewhat.

I agree about colour temps - people are too used to screens being cool. However, chances are you won't be able to tell from a photograph.

Why? The backlights on LEDs are very blue. AOtuwhite balance on most camera will see this is the dominant light source in a picture and try to compensate, thus making the image warmer. Thus the white on a screen shot via camera will never look as it does in real life, unless you do a custom white balance...and even then who knows what to white balance off to make it 'true' to life?

So I always see shots posted asking, how is mine? To be brutally honest, no one can know.

The only thing I ask for is that the two screens are matched. I've seen machines where the top screen is warmer than the bottom. THAT is distracting.
 
So dont the 3DS and 3DS XL have the same PPI? With the bigger screen do the games end up looking blurrier? Does text in RPG games (likes Tales of the Abyss) become unreadable?

PPI = Pixels Per Inch, so no, they don't have the same PPI.

Games are a bit blurrier, but it's not really something you'll notice unless you compare directly with a 3DS. Considering that text gets bigger, it doesn't really matter that it's slightly blurrier. You'll be able to read all text just fine.

The DSi XL had 76ppi while the 3DS XL is 95ppi. For reference the original 3DS is 132ppi. So yeah, the 3DS XL is going to be noticeably blurrier and the black lines between pixels will stand out more, which I imagine will make the images appear darker.

The 3DS and the 3DS XL have the same resolution. Like a 24" 1080p monitor and a 60" 1080p TV both have the same resolution, but a different ppi. Since they both have the same resolution, each of the pixels on the larger screen are bigger.

The ppi for Nintendo's handhelds works out to about... might be off slightly + or - 1 ppi cause I can't remember how I rounded when I calculated the ppi

GBA = 97 ppi
GBA Micro = 144 ppi
DS Lite =107 ppi
DSi = 98 ppi
DSi XL = 76 ppi
3DS = 132 ppi
3DS XL = 96 ppi

So the size of each pixel on the 3DSXL will be about the same size as the pixels on the regular DSi, or GBA.

It won't look blurrier.

People mistake enlarging an image to it getting blurrier, but it's not that simple. People are used to that when enlarging an image on a display that is higher resolution. Since pixels are enlarged over the native, then the screen/graphics card needs to compensate for the enlarged pixels, sometimes by adding in pixels to fudge edges (making it blurrier) or to guess what half a pixel looks like (also making it blurrier).

Even if it were enlarged to an equivalent multiple (like making exactly 4 pixels look like one), you get a pixellated look, put it will still be clear.

For screen enlargements like the 3DS XL, it's similar to the latter. It won't look pixellated, because it's using the native resolution. Images are rendered as intended, and besides the PPI is actually reasonable if it's 96.
