3DS XL First Impressions/Previews

I haven't really noticed it yet myself.

It has a more modern architecture than GameCube/TEVs. Some developers have mentioned porting games (e.g. LEGO Star Wars III) between Wii and 3DS, which would theoretically put it above GameCube, too. Mainly, more RAM, newer architecture improvements, though. (Oh, and 3-D. :P )

Does anyone know if Gamestop takes Japanese DS Lites? It's literally exactly the same just different type of serial on the bottom.

If they scan the barcode, it's not going to come up as a US system and they might not take it because of that.

I tried to trade a US DS in at a Japanese game store and they wouldn't take it.

The worst they can so is no.

I wonder if the xl will herald a new level of popularity for 3ds, as the ds lite did for the ds years ago. I hope so. Would be great to see a ds level of quality software support happen again for a handheld. I love my iOS devices, but I miss real controls so much. Probably gonna buy an xl this week... Need to see one in person first.

..where were you people when GAF convinced me to buy this before it got stupid expensive and hard to find
"oh irish you love vesperia, youll enjoy this" ....great

if you love Vesperia there's no reason you wouldn't love Abyss. neither Boney or Billiechu like Tales, so their opinions are kind of unimportant.

Wow, never realized how many people disliked Tales of the Abyss. Thought it was a decent game myself, however i'm an avid tales fan (since symphonia). What I enjoy most about the games is the combat system compared to traditional RPGs. Not to mention upgrading the skills and artes.

I didn't know Luke could put such a dent on people's opinion of the game. But that's ok, i can understand the game won't be for everybody.

Lol why's that? I've heard mostly good things, other then the main dude complains a lot lol
It's so-so for a standard JRPG and will have higher than average production values due to being a ps2 port, but I didn't like it and I'm a huge tales fan. The characters are alright, but the story is weak (read: boring, one predictable twist), there is an insane amount of backtracking, and a lot of slow paced portions. I bought it when it came out on PS2 and have tried to finish it 3 times, each time failing. The closest I got was 20-30 hours in on my last try. By comparison I completed symphonia a whopping 7 times and vesperia 3 times, still working on graces/xillia.

It's the kind of game that I just can't figure out how tales fans who have played the other entries can enjoy.

Would all 24 hour Wal-Mart stores sell the 3DS XL at midnight or is it on a store-by-store basis? I tried calling mine but after 10-15 minutes of the guy trying to transfer me to the electronics department with no one in that department answering, I gave up. I'm thinking of just going and chancing it, but I'm wondering what my odds are.

Walmart's customer service is like pulling teeth. Fucking terrible. I would just go there, you're never gonna get anywhere trying to ask over the phone.

ToA is great. WTF?

Don't listen to the haters. Tons of people love this game.

here lies the truth. Don't listen to those jocks, ToA is great! It's a Tales game proper and yes, Luke is an arrogant yob, but he gets better...in the last ten hours or so

I loved Abyss when it came out, but it's dated terribly to me even though it's not that old. After Vesperia, and especially Graces (IMO, the shining gold standard that the series should adhere to for gameplay and system design), it just comes across as very cludgy and unpolished from a gameplay perspective and otherwise the pacing, lack of things like voiced skits, etc, pile up on other fronts. I had fun with it back in 2006, but I'm starting to wonder if that's just because I was so completely disenchanted with Symphonia's harebrained antics.

The 3DS port is so-so, as well, the loading is better than off a base PS2 but the visuals took a hit and the text looks terrible shrunk down below it's native resolution, hard to read, at least for me. This may be better on the XL but it's still going to be a bit jarring. Not to say it's a horrible port, it's not, just kind of a lazy one.

I dunno, I just remember liking this to the point of being one of my favorite games in 2006, along with Bully, but I just can't put up with it anymore myself.

They should. It really depends on who is int he department come midnight. I have dealt with some real winners before. One refused to sell a game to me even though the box said sell date was ok because "Walmart does new releases on Tuesday"

Or you could get the lazy fuck who refuses to go into the back and bring the units out or claims they cant find them etc after only spending 30 seconds in the back.

In a game that's about 40 hours long, that's not that good. I'm not one of the haters, but Luke was just.....gah. If ANYBODY had been the main character other than him (Guy, Tear, Jade, hell even Natalie) the game would have been 10x better in my eyes, the gameplay was fine.

Thanks for the replies. Yea, I'll give it a shot. Hopefully it works out.

Spoke with someone in the Gamestop across from my job today. They said the best they could do was have me pay full price for the 3DSxl, take it home and do the transferring, bring it back and they'd allow me to refund it and just redo the whole transaction but this time with my 100$ credit for bringing the original 3DS with me.

So basically just confirming what someone else said earlier in the thread.

So I went to one Walmart and they don't even know it exists. I called another one and the lady said that if they are to be released tomorrow they will start stocking around midnight tonight. So I'll just take a chance and go down there to get one. <_<;

Mine should be coming next week

Excited as this will be replacing my current 3ds. I have not yet got around to playing too many games but there looks to be a bright future for this system.

I'll now own both the vita and 3ds tonight(hopefully) and about 10 games on both, tho I may have to find a way to get that white vita in 2 months *drool*

Anyway back on topic: 3DS XL in 4 hours and 29 mins :D

Ha! I've already picked up 9 games! Nine! Before I've even bought the system. I am a crazy person.

Tales of the abyss
Mario 3d land
Tetris axis
Zelda
Star fox 64
Resident evil R
Devil surviver overlocked
That final fantasy rhythm game I can't spell
Mario kart 7

And I'm picking up Mario bros 2 tomorrow as well

I'd definitely recommend Kid Icarus Uprising. Some will say the controls are bad. I say they are what they are, and if you can deal with it the game is fucking awesome filled awesome.

Edit: also, I have this fully paid off at GameStop, but am thinking of just getting it at Walmart tonight. I can just tell GameStop to cancel my preorder and move that money to my account, right? Eventually for Wii U preorder when available, maybe? I'm thinking this has to be a viable option, or I could just get the XL from them and return it immediately for store credit?

Thanks for the recommendation :) when I was shopping I decided to go with final fantasy beat agents. But if ToA is not my cup of tea I'll trade It in for that for sure. I'll certainly pick it up soon tho.

you will call me crazy here but I hated how he harassed Mieu. Go to hell, spoiled brat

Yeah, phoning is not a good idea, they have you on hold forever or no one ever answers. It's especially bad in Miami, FL where I live because more than half the time the employees are Hispanic ladies in their forties that don't know anything about electronics whatsoever... So I just went to my nearest Walmart and asked the employees there and they thankfully had a few young people and they went to the back and told me that I could come back at 12:00am to pick one up.

Btw, I specifically quoted you because I noticed you have a Cuban flag as your avatar, do you live in Miami as well (I'm Cuban in heritage and Miami is full of us, lol)?

I own 21 3DS games and Tales of the Abyss is the only one I regretted picking up to the point that I sold it a week later after 3 hours of torture playing it. I wasn't intending to pick it up when I did but I was afraid it was going to be tough to track down later. I am glad I was able to get rid of it for 80% of its value. I too tried very hard to get into it.

I'm not a JRPG nut or anything, but it just wasn't a good game. The main character's annoyance aside, I just found the entire setting, world, dialogue and characters to be so eye-rollingly bad that I couldn't handle it. It was also boring and the combat a snooze fest.

Bring on Etrian 4! :P

I guess it's nice to see others that hate ToA too. :p

It was my first Tales game and what a terrible first impression it was. My only 3DS game purchase regret... maybe I'll sell it in a few years if the selling price increases

My friend is offering me $120 for my black 3DS if I buy the power pak +.

Sounds like a good deal for me, but I really don't want a red or blue 3DS XL, plus I don't know if I want to be spending ~$100 again, since I'm saving for a new car, going to buy a new xbox and borderlands 2 next month, and need to be saving my money for college.

Help me make life decisions GAF.

(otherwise I would just be buying it once Animal Crossing comes out, so I guess it's sort of an investment, unless there's price drop to go with my friend inevitably wanting to pay less).

sounds like you're decision is clear, don't get one

I would lose my mind trying to describe an electronic to older Hispanic ladies(i.e. My mother)!

I did grow up in North Miami Beach in the 90's, but I'm a Chicago native. Parents emigrated from Cuba back in the Mariel days.

Question regarding the system transfer.

All of my 3DS games (mostly ambassador games) are on my Sd card and I moved 4 swords over as well.

What all will the system transfer move over. I'm trying to limit what I move since I'm going to use my phone tethered since there isn't a wifi connect and I don't want to be there all day.

so you said you need to save $$ for college, but think it's wise to spend $200 on a 3DS XL?

seems like you're already set in your ways, not sure why you're asking

I'm at that point in a decision where I'm excited to get something new, but just need to stop and take a step back and think.

Sometimes I'm way too impulsive

Which one, man? I'm buying groceries tonight in Miami, might as well go to the one with this.

From Nintendo:

So, I would like to grab one of these this weekend. Only issue is, in order to transfer my stuff from my Ambassador 3DS I have to buy an XL first, right?

If I do that, transfer, and trade in the 3DS, any notes on how much I'll get for it.

Gamestop is giving $100 in trade in for your old 3DS. You can buy the XL first, do the transfer at home and return the 3DS and get $100 back.

I'm doing it with cash though so I can get cash back instead of store credit just in case, lol

Is this confirmed? I would think YMMV on that sorta arrangement.

Hmm, might work. I could pay off my Halo 4 LE with it I guess.

Are there any links online for the apparent Best Buy deal for the free hard case with purchase of the XL? The weekly ad for my local Best Buy online doesn't show it, and I have a feeling if I don't print out proof, they won't know what I'm talking about.
