3DS XL First Impressions/Previews

Not sure how a cradle helps. Am I missing something?

I'm sorry, I should have explained myself better. The charging time will still be long (actually, longer: the cradle charges the 3DS even slower), but if you always use it, you won't have to fully charge it anymore, and almost everytime you take your 3DS out the cradle to play, the battery will be fully charged.

Putting it in the cradle and plugging in the cable is the same - just atheistically different.

I lol'd.

Since I don't use anything other than the cradle, I can't say for sure, but I always thought that the cradle charged the 3DS slower than the cable plugged directly in the device. I think I read about it somewhere, but I could be wrong.

Kid Icarus was killing my left hand. I tried, guys. I tried for hours. The game was otherwise incredible so it's a damn shame I found that the controls were such a drawback for me. In fact I played more of it than I would have if the presentation weren't so good. But it was not meant to be.

Perhaps if I ever get a circle pad or if Nintendo ever actually releases a revision with another stick.

Here's my way to play:

Sit in couch/recliner, take pillow/cushion in lap, prop up 3DS comfortably on pillow and play.

Works wonders ^_^

Just got my Aussie XL, can anyone tell me if my 3DS has the yellow tint issue? It's noticeably warmer... but is this just how it looks normally for those of you with "normal" XLs? Or should I go back to EB Games for a new one? Sorry for the bad pic.

The yellow tint is definetly there for others I've heard, and mine... common when in 2D mode... in 3D, it's either gone or less pronounced

Ugh those screens are so pathetic for a brand new device.

Because in the end, you're unloading thousands of rounds into enemies while processing from kill room to kill room. And there is no exploration in this game, as there were in the original set of games. It's far more linear, and only teases full exploration in the beginning. A ship setting is lovely, but the execution was not that great. The chapter break up does it no favours either, trying to maintain the sense of horror. I know for most people it's one of the must have 3DS games, but for me it was pretty underwhelming.

In the end it was way better than re5 to me. But yeah it is action survival like 4 and 5 with better atmosphere than 5, and I didnt mind the chapter setup. But I'm an re4 kinda guy as opposed to the originals. Some of the later Raid Mode levels are really large(need keys to progress though) and if they would have opened up a lot of the ship to explore like that in the single player campaign that would have been ideal.

Anyone wanna post their thoughts on Rhythm Thief? I tried the demo and thought it was quite fun. How's the full game? Demo looks great on the XL btw.

Charm, do you like charming characters, charming visuals, charming story, charming soundtrack? the game's greatly fun, I haven't finished, just a few hours in, but it's enough for me to recommend it, it's awesome.

So, I'm going to pick this up tomorrow. Red or Blue? And I know I'll get NSMB2, but Resident Evil, Super Mario 3d Land, or Mario Kart for my second game?
We have a red and blue, I can say this: The red while a nice shade, is a lot more flat/dull than the blue. The blue is
More metallic, nicer sheen and is really, really impressive shade of blue.

Go blue. Trust me.

i can't decide between blue or red. fuck you Nintendo, why didn't NA get white?
I have a sneaking feeling they're saving all black and all white for or just following Holiday (when U comes out, so you can have them match colors for cross play experiences).

White is the worst color though. I mean, sure, it looks nice, but white electronics are prone to yellowing over time and white bezels are inferior to black ones. Get Virtual Boy red.

might be leaning blue a lil more cuz it's more metallic. and i already have a red DSi XL.

Now that you guys mention it, I didn't bother to check for yellow tint in my gf's XL. I tried it for a few minutes and didn't notice anything odd with the coloring so I guess all is good.

Hmm, yeah. What I want to know is, for those of you who have non-yellow XL screens, do they look EXACTLY the same next to your old 3DS? I just can't tell if the slightly warmer tone is meant to be normal or not.

Blue is super good. If you can and haven't yet, check them both out in-person, because they almost guaranteed will look way better than in any photos/videos you've seen.

My NA 3DS - Cool Screens
Nephew's NA 3DS - Cool Screens
My JP 3DS - Warm Screens
Nephew's NA 3DS XL - Warm Screens

I don't know, region based or luck?

i never really got the problem with yellow stuff. I like using f.lux on my pc, and i'm basked in florescent light in my room anyways.

Because white should be white. White shouldn't have a bluish hue, which the DSi screens had, and it most definitely shouldn't turn whites yellow as they do on the DSi XL and 3DS XL. Nintendo can't seem to get the temp right. I'm playing Mario now and his white clothes are brownish yellow. That's not color-accurate.

I have to accept it because that's what Nintendo has gone with, but no one should accept one screen being a far different temp than the other. That was one of the problems with my first XL. It's incredibly distracting.

Whooo got my 3DS XL! :D

I can't tell if I have the warmer screens or not, usually that sort of thing would bother me so the fact that I can't tell I guess is a good sign?

Man the thing is slick as, build quality and glorious screens make everything so good. And I'm someone who doesn't give a shit about 3D usually (hate it, hate how I move and the screen goes blurry etc) but I popped it on half way for Mario Kart on the XL and woah I could actually see the appeal for once. Looked nice as.

Still wont be using it I doubt (NSMB2 it didn't seem very good still even on the XL) but for the first time ever I actually could see why some people like it.

It is a bit harder on the wrists and going back to the small one temporary was like oh this is nicer weight but thats pretty much the only thing I could say in its favor.... never really notice till you have a better one but for me I don't see many reasons why someone would stick with a regular one.

It will be interesting to see where Nintendo goes to next with it, I have a feeling we'll get a 3DS regular size remodel/redesign or something to make it a bit more comfortable and fix up some of the issues just for those that don't actually want a bigger one.

I'm off to street pass with myself before more testing/transfer process lol. Farewell Zelda 3DS, you served me well over the time I had you! I'm sure you will be just as good to my little brother. :D

This thing is fucking sexy. NSMB2 looks great on it and as long as I don't hold it too close or puposely look for pixels everything is fantastic. And DS games can actually run natively and look good. This thing is amazing. If for some reason you were trying to decide between normal 3DS and the XL get the XL.

It seems more comfortable but I haven't used it enough to judge that.

D-pad seems improved.

Trying to decide whether to bite the bullet and upgrade. Do games looks significantly more "jagged" on the larger screens?

The 3DS games don't look amazing to begin with so I'm trying to ascertain if they look worse on bigger screens.

I just picked one up, only played 10 mins of Mario Kart but it feels really good. Build quality is much improved, feels nicer in the hands, and the screens are like playing the game for the first time it's such a different experience.

I held it up in front of a window to see the gap between the top and bottom halves, easily a couple mm gap there. Even squeezing hard in the middle it barely touches the top screen. So no concerns with scratching for me.

Nah, games don't really look any jaggier.

Stuff still looks better than non native res vita games :S

low dpi > non native res for me :(

Still plenty of jaggies around for everyone, but i guess it's a given due to consoles having so much jaggies still :S

I WANT ME PC IN ME POCKET!

Maybe I hold the system farther away.

I'm also blind

I think it all really depends on the person. You'll hear some people say stuff like "it blows up an already low resolution so it looks all pixelated, ew" and they are picky like that. I personally don't even notice. All I know is that the picture is now bigger, and that's awesome.

random question: when it comes to migrating the data, does it matter that the 3DS are on different firmware?

answered my own question: it forced me to

This.

They absolutely do, but you can get used to it.
Seeing the pixel structure helps. PSP games on Vita look infinitely more jagged despite technically running at a higher resolution on a screen almost exactly the same size, and it's due to the DPI making the boundaries between pixels nigh imperceptible.

If I am actually looking for it and "counting pixels" it is noticeable but during normal use it doesn't bother me. Same thing with sprite heavy PSP games on Vita.

If I'm not mistaken, both 3DSes need to be updated to the latest firmware because they both need to connect to the Internet and talk to Nintendo's servers to transfer the licenses.

I've been playing on my XL for like 8 hours today and I've come to the conclusion that the 3DS XL is seriously the hest handheld I've ever used.

hello ,i just got my RED 3DSXL and it look very nice.
but i want to ask one question,
does the back cover can be opened a bit so easily?
i ask this because when i tried to pop the SD card from the transfer process, suddenly the back cover can be opened,
i see that the back cover only covered by 2 screw. sorry for my bad english ,it is not my main language :)

My HORI screen protectors came in today. Normally I'm fuck awful at applying them and get air bubbles/dust/etc., but I've found screen protectors necessary in the past, and as a heavy Theatrhythm player, there was no way I was going to play it on my XL before getting my touch screen some protection.

Anyway, I have to hand it to HORI -- these are fantastic screen protectors and they seriously could not make applying them any easier. The instructions are clear and the installation process is pretty foolproof, and this is coming from someone who, like I said, has been terrible at applying them in the past. For the first time ever, my top screen's protector has no dust trapped underneath and no air bubbles. The touch screen's protector does have a scant couple tiny bubbles, but no dust.

I'm very pleased. If you're on the fence about the HORI protectors, I recommend them wholeheartedly.

Use that little piece of cardboard with the crease that's included to sqeegee out the bubbles. You can pretty much get out any bubbles even if they're smack dab in the middle of the screen. It works really well

Wow the thing is huge,it almost look like if it was a Samsung clone of the 3DS which is a good thing.

But sadly the speakers are total crap (maybe my unit is broken?).

Okay GAF, I really need someone to help me out here. I went to a bunch of retailers today and tried 4 3DS XLs and compared them to my original 3DS, and they ALL had the same, warm-ish (but not overly yellow) screens. The original 3DS' screen was always cooler in every case.

So either my original 3DS is just over-cool, or people aren't telling the full story. Can anyone here who deadset believes they have a normal 3DS XL please compare it head-to-head with their original 3DS and tell me that the colour tone looks EXACTLY the same? Because I'm starting to believe that all XLs have a slightly warmer colour tone. Surely this can't be a defect if I've looked at this many and they're all the same.

I am at a loss as to what to do.

That's because ALL 3DS XL have a warmer tone compared to the 3DS. Nintendo has said so themselves. It's not a defect and you're not going to find any 3DS XL in the world that has a cooler tone than the 3DS
