3DS XL First Impressions/Previews

3DS at launch compared to 3DS after the price reduction. Comparing screen qualities, etc
They couldn't possibly have increased PPI without shrinking the screens. It does seem possible however they used cheaper quality screens later on in an attempt to slim down costs.

I assumed they switched manufacturers to bring the cost down. Not sure if it's just color saturation or what that changed exactly.

It's a noticeable difference, but you probably couldn't tell unless you had a side by side. Then it's fairly obvious

I, too, did this with the original 3DS, and I really enjoyed the game. The XL is way too long and heavy for the same configuration to work. I'm going to break out the stand tonight to see if that helps, but the game is getting sold if it doesn't.

Yeah, slightly worried that you're having this problem :(

I'm gonna have to try it out for myself soon! Luckily I still have my OG so I won't have to sell the game or anything.

Since my local Gamestop isn't getting any screen protectors in and I'm not at home, I did the next best thing I could think of. I purchased a set of screen protectors for a tablet and cut them down to size.

The result, its the best I've ever done when installing a screen protector. No air bubbles and both the top and bottom screens are lined up perfectly.

I'm using this case for my XL and its totally worth it

Highly recommend it. Costs about $20.

I have that. It's great for long trips; 3DS and Vita in front, games, earphones and extra stylus in the back pocket.
(I lose my stylus a lot. Ended up getting a bag of 50 DS lite ones on ebay for $5 lol)
.

The balance issue was already a problem on the OG 3DS. Holding it with your left hand, using the top L button, and the analog in your hand is one thing, but it's the fact that doing all that and not being able to use your right hand for stability is a PitA. I find it more noticeable when you have to control the camera when you "land".

I don't have any balance issues with the game. I've played this game many times without the stand in lan matches, and is never an issue. Granted I may have discovered a way to hold it that makes it confortable to me.

What spotpass data did Street Fighter IV have? I'm not sure there was anything of note to worry about.

I lost out on my DoA costumes in my transfer from the 3DS to the XL which sucked.

No it wasn't superfluous data, well, maybe, but I think it was like network settings for receiving spotpass data. Without it you can no longer get them.

The only way to get the file back is to do a system restore. I mean, has anyone else experienced this? Appears to be a glitch or oversight with street fighter iv

ok, received mine today and been messing around with it past 2 hours.

the loss of image quality isnt bad at all. i can see it a lil bit if i squint really hard but slowly getting used to it and it doesn't bother me.

i liked the pointy edges of the og 3ds more tbh. i could poke them against my palms in mario kart and get a really nice grip, and i cant do that with the rounded edges. not that big of a deal for the very awesome screen though.

my color is a lil more warm, but getting used to it as well and wont even notice by tomorrow i suppose.

happy with my purchase.

oh yeah, i dropped it as soon as i got it, fell off the table i charge my electronics on, onto carpet, and there's already a very faint small scratch on the outside like a fingernail would do if i tilt it into light at the right angle. guess it bumped the table on the way down. good thing im not OCD or anything, but the casing may scratch easily.

Just got one from Target and it's not nearly as massive as I'd feared: I quite like it and this thing will be a great distraction from my in-laws when our first child is born in a few weeks.

So far I have been playing Zelda: OoT the most. I am really happy that I waited on this one. I only got a couple of hours into it on the OG 3DS. On the XL I am easily able to touch the buttons on the lower screen, where before I recall fumbling more for them. It also makes everything seem so much bigger and more epic. Just walking around and experiencing the world still impresses me after all these years.

Sometimes my eyes lose the sweet spot though, but I am usually able to reach a good angle to fix that pretty quickly. I keep the slider at around 75% up. Anyway, still one of the greatest games of all time. It's nice playing with upgraded visuals and interface.

How long is the battery suppose to last? I had a full charge this morning. I've been playing it off and on. Sometimes with max 3D. Downloaded the RE demo, played that. Played about an hour of theatrerythum. I guess I'm going on 4 hours. I even played some Dragon Quest 9.

I have 2 bars left. Does it use a lot of battery in standby mode? With the blue light flashing?

With the original model you'd be flashing red by now with that usage and time spent.

I actually got to handle one today (an EB employee who knows me let me look at hers) and I have to admit, it's a sweet piece of hardware - definitely a nice upgrade to my launch 3DS in terms of fit and finish, I think. I'd buy one but I'm working my way through my DS backlog right now (I'm finally playing DS Crono Trigger for gods' sakes! and I still have to play Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors and Dragon Warrior IX as well!) so I want to do that on my DSiXL... between that and the Vita, I probably won't have time for any more 3DS games before Christmas (RE:R was the last I played), but I think I'll save SM3DL for the 3DSXL... It's a sweet piece of kit and I congratulate everyone who picked it up this week... :)

Is it just me or is the circle pad really bad? I read that the CP was much better than the PSP's nub (and 3DS XL has, supposedly, an even better CP), but I'm not feeling it. Way too slippery and not enough range. I'm playing KH DDD and it's a chore to keep the characters running.
On the other hand the D-pad is great, if a bit loose.

My HORI screen protectors came in today. Normally I'm fuck awful at applying them and get air bubbles/dust/etc., but I've found screen protectors necessary in the past, and as a heavy Theatrhythm player, there was no way I was going to play it on my XL before getting my touch screen some protection.

Anyway, I have to hand it to HORI -- these are fantastic screen protectors and they seriously could not make applying them any easier. The instructions are clear and the installation process is pretty foolproof, and this is coming from someone who, like I said, has been terrible at applying them in the past. For the first time ever, my top screen's protector has no dust trapped underneath and no air bubbles. The touch screen's protector does have a scant couple tiny bubbles, but no dust.

I'm very pleased. If you're on the fence about the HORI protectors, I recommend them wholeheartedly.

Are the Hori ones static or adhesive type protectors?

Yea the little analog chode is awful. Though they've never been good on any system, I guess Nintendo had no other choice because of the clamshell.

Don't really know what you're talking about, the XL's Circle Pad is wonderful. I prefer it to Vita's sticks to be quite frank with you.

OG's pad was decent, but this one eats its lunch.

If you think the XL's version is bad you would prolly hate the one on the OG 3DS, it's why I bought those textured circle pad covers.

I don't notice much of a difference at all between the CP on the XL and on the OG. I like them both more than the PSP's nub, but I prefer the sticks on the Vita. It's better than nothing though. Mostly I'm just pleased now that the dpad is in a comfortable position.

I thought about getting them but the constant applying/removing seems like it would be really annoying.

So I just got my red 3DS XL in from Futureshop

My initial impressions:

Excellent build, excellent screen, vastly improved buttons and design, games
Look great and the 3D is absolutely wonderful

Upon playing some demos quickly I can say I am dissapointed with some IQ but more
Impressed with others

Standard DS games seem to work just fine and the new 1:1 mode is awesome. No real need for an OG DS for me anymore

Overall I am very happy with the system. Even the circle pad is a big improvement from the original's "slippery" version.

The jaggies have not affected me as they have others

My only complaint, however, is the sound quality. It sounds like a downgrade from the DSi XL and I was expecting this to be improved, given the "XL" moniker

Overall I am satisfied with the system. It's great. I recommend it to anyone just looking in the thread with intentions of getting a 3DS

haha my bro put the screen protector on and it came out good, only a couple air bubbles on the touch screen but the top screen was great B^)

time to get elite beat agents and go crazy :D

I also forgot to add: the comfort! I have not had any issues comfort wise and this may be nintendos best handheld yet in that regard.

Also a
Quick question: does any one know if it is possible to turn on DS compatibility so that by default it launches in 1:1 mode? (I.e. no need to press select every single time)

Not possible, unfortunately.

This thread is too long. Does anyone have the link to the headphone jack adapter that makes the connection head to towards the side instead of straight down? I want to buy one of these off Amazon. The sound is just so bad through the speakers but so good through my headphones, but I can't use it when I rest the XL on a pillow on my chest. Thanks in advance.

Use that little piece of cardboard with the crease that's included to sqeegee out the bubbles. You can pretty much get out any bubbles even if they're smack dab in the middle of the screen. It works really well

Yeah, I'll do that. Thanks.

Does anyone else think the viewing angle for 3D is a little more sensitive with the XL? I feel like when I move the XL slightly my vision goes blurry easier than with my 3DS. Maybe it is just me.

Definitely. It's not a deal breaker or anything, but the 3D sweet spot is definitely narrower with the XL.

Adhesive.

Honestly until I see something confirming this I can't help but believe that they are both the same in this regard, I don't see it when people say it's narrower on the XL. I'll definitely take another look at my friends black 3DS though when I remember just to double check.

But yes as has been mentioned the speakers suck on the XL in comparison, the first time I checked one out it was pretty apparent. Not a huge deal to me but I'll definitely be making use of headphones more often while playing.

I mean, like most things that are subjective, your mileage will vary... but I can definitely say that I've been slipping out of the 3D sweet spot much more often on my XL, and I'm not playing it any differently than I played my original 3DS. Holding it at the same distance, 3D slider is at max, etc. I'm just finding that the XL's sweet spot is much narrower. It's still easy to stay within it in most cases, though.

Alright I definitely get what you mean now.

XL cradle get! I'm in the US, so I ordered it from the NOA parts store. Pictured here with my blue DsiXL pen, and a new grip pen I got off amazon. Both are great.

Silly that I'm so excited for a slab of plastic, but after using my original 3DS cradle for so long, I feel like every handheld needs one like this. It's just so damn easy and smooth to drop the system into. Totally worth it, IMO.

Yes. It's bullshit that they're selling the XL's cradle for $19 while the OG's is $5, so I'm holding off for now. But the cradle was invaluable to me during the year and a half of my 3DS ownership.

My OG 3DS was pure cool white.

My Mushroom 3DS is a bit warmer, but still white.

And my red XL is a bit warmer even still, but both by itself and comparing it to the Mushroom 3DS, it still looks white, not 'piss yellow' as others have decried.

I do agree with this.
The 3d is way better , but it seems easier to lose the effect.
To me its almost like the screen has this strange sheen effect to it , and whenever u move it at an angle the sheen shows up and you lose the effect.

I still prefer it over the mirror like quality of the OG 3DS though.

I love it.

Just got back from Gamestop with my free Pilotwings resort.

All in all, I loved how smoothly everything went, the transfer and all that nonsense and going back and telling them about the free game I was supposed to get. They told me they would call me and let me know when they had a new shipment come in and they called me today.

$100 trade in plus a free game? Say what you want about Gamestop but they actually saved me money!

Decided on the blue yesterday. To be honest all the colors look nice to me. The screen is simply gorgeous. Its sheer size makes pretty much every game I own infinitely more enjoyable/immersive despite the diminished pixel density. If Nintendo increased the resolution as well it would be stunning but this compromise is more than acceptable. The visuals still look reasonably sharp which is surprising when you consider the fact the screen is twice as big.

Everything else is a significant improvement over the OG 3DS. Aesthetics, comfort and build quality are what you'd expect from a 2012 handheld. The 3DS no longer looks like a piece of shit next to the Vita. The only thing that is a downgrade are the speakers. You guys weren't kidding when you said they were soft. Not a big deal to me but surely an oversight when you can barely make out some of the sounds in Resident Evil.

For Aussies looking for a deal EB are doing it for $278 with your choice of: SM3DL, MK7, NSMB2, Kingdom Hearts, Kid Icarus, Heroes of Ruin or Resident Evil. Also you get $150 trade in credit for OG 3DS if you have an EBWorld card. If you're just looking for the console itself then JB have it for $228..

The third one is the best depiction of what the blue actually looks like.

Oh dang, I should get a blue DSi XL pen. I loved that when I had my bronze.

Ill have to get one before October, with the 999 sequel and Layton.

Looks like you can buy 'em on their site. Does it match the 3DS color pretty good? It seems like it does from the images.
