3DS XL First Impressions/Previews

Bah I want that Pikachu one but I don't want to import a Euro model...

C'mon Reggie, just give me a chance to purchase either the plain white or Pikachu one...
 
I picked mine up yesterday and started playing and it felt off to me...my finger was catching on the side of it (by the volume).

I turned on my light and looked at it and it's starting to separate from the body, the entire black panel. The screws all appear to be tight, it's just unsnapped from it. And it won't go back.

Has anyone else seen that before?

I just checked mine and it does snap apart there under the volume slider like you described. Mine snapped back though. Maybe something in yours broke.

Yeah it doesn't click back in...doesn't seem like anything is broken. I'm going to take off the whole back and see what's up.

Well I got it off and fixed that one spot...now other spots are doing it. Need to do it again and clip it in better everywhere.

Still seems to happen, but not as badly or as often. I'd just get a Hori screen protector to be safe, mine actually had some scratches out of the box but it's at the bottom right corner and if I'm looking head on like I should for 3D I don't see it.

Darn. I'll just use a cloth to cover it up.
 
After seeing the new 3DS xls that will be available in europe I think I have to postpone buying one now. The white ones are looking really great. But my all-time favourite is the monster hunter tri g bundle with the complete dark 3ds xl. I hope it will be released in europe soon too.

Ugh, that's too shortsighted, not to mention that if it does start to break down from years of use (or accidents) it's nice to have a better version to get.

I do however hope that they hold off for longer, bigger screens were sorely needed but there's probably not much else until better screen technology gets cheaper.
 
Well with Zero Escape and Layton around the corner, I finally ordered one.
The Amazon UK deal was the best I found (200 euro plus a free game and free shipping-I've never ordered a console from abroad before, I hope they pack it real good....).

Can't wait!
 
I will probably jump in on 3DS XL in blackfriday.

What colors are avaiable in the US? Do they have black/black?

I hate blue or red on the outside and black inside.

Welcome to NoA's Lackfest, we have a wide variety of colors available, starting with blue/black and ending with and red/black.... and that's it.
 
So I got to play a XL the other day and i'm kind of glad I did. I was about to get a XL in a couple weeks to replace my 3DS I had to sell some months ago and it just wasn't comfortable for me. It was a similar problem I had with the original phat DS I got at launch. I have pretty small fingers (something i'm a little ashamed to admit, could never play musical instruments because of it) and some larger devices are hard for me to hold comfortably depending on button placement. I had to get rid of my launch DS because I just couldn't enjoy it. Now the original 3DS I had was pretty comfortable to me like a PSP/Vita is, just the right size for my hands and I could play it comfortably for hours or in bed.

I know it might be going against the grain of 3DS-GAF consensus but I can't be the only one in this position. I really want to rebuy a 3DS so I can catch up on games I missed like KH3DS, FFTheater and get upcoming games like Code of Princess and Paper Mario. I didn't mind DS games on the original 3DS at all so that doesn't bother me. I would like the extra screen size but after playing it for a little while I just don't think i'm going to enjoy it in the long run and will regret it. I think i'm going to go ahead and just pick up the purple 3DS in a couple weeks instead, i can pick it up for about $150.
 
I finally got an XL, and after transferring over from my original 3DS I realized that the SD card is only 2GB. I plan on purchasing NSB2 very soon and the wave of DD titles is only going to continue.

Are there any specific guidlines I should be aware of when purchasing a new card for the 3DS XL? I guess I'm specifically asking because I notice that New Egg has "Speed Class Ratings" for their SD cards, something I've never noticed in the past. Will this effect the read/write speed in-game potentially? Is there any upper limit I should be aware of?

Nope. Class 10 is as high as they go (afaik), and that's only really recommended for video-shooting with cameras. You won't need to go that high for gaming. I'm not sure what the max transfer rate is on 3DS, but I'd be surprised if you'd notice a difference in performance between the highest and lowest classes.
 
I stand corrected. So I guess you need to decide whether a few seconds of loading time is worth the additional cost of going class 10 (which these days isn't too bad in most respects).

Yeah, it's not much of a price difference so I will just go with the faster speed. The primary purpose of my post was to find out if there are any other things I should be aware of and I guess the answer is no.

I am expecting to use this one card for as long as I own the system so I might as well spend the few extra dollars on the fastest speed. Thanks guys.
 
I bought screen protectors for my first DS Lite only for the hinge to crack and eventually render the system unusable anyway.

Not gonna bother with that this time around, I think.
 
Had $280 bux in dell giftcards from a m17x r4 promo so I ordered a blue XL today with kingdom hearts and a 2 year accidental warranty. Pretty stoked since I didnt pay a penny. This will look nice next to my vita! Im officially part of the tin-nen-do family.

I'm sorry, can you confirm that, when the screen is locked in position, it can move a little back and forth? I don't know if my new 3dsxl is borken or if the screen is supposed to act like that...

Class 10 isn't that expensive though; Class 10 64GB MicroSD is still around $1/GB last time I looked on Amazon...
 
isn't the locking of the mega-threads completely counter-productive? Lock one mega-thread, another will take its place.... I mean where are we supposed to talk generally about stuff?
 
Wouldn't closing down this threads about specific consoles end up causing the creation of new threads for literally everything?

I liked the 3DS thread, I could go and ask about anything specific, or to talk about a game I just played. Not sure in what thread I could do that anymore. :(
