4K UHD/Blu-ray/DVD Community Thread: Bringing the Theater Home!

Let's say I have no home theater equipment. What's a mid-tier price range, roughly-speaking, for a 50-60" 4K TV, a 2.1 system, and a 4K Blu-ray player? $1,000-$2,000?

Mid range?

Probably this...

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N284JCN/?tag=neogaf0e-20

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XXR6JK3/?tag=neogaf0e-20

x2 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00Y1EFBDM/?tag=neogaf0e-20

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MTJA6EV/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Comes to $2125.95

Thats a Sony 900e, a yamaha receiver capable of 5.2 but you can make it so it does 2.1. Two standing speakers for stereo, a ten inch sub, and an xbox one s which allows you to play 4k blurays.

Mid tier is definitely not in the $1000 range. You're talking maybe $1300 for a TV, $400 for a receiver, $250 for a 4K BR player, and maybe about $300 for a 2.1 setup. It can be done for less, but then you start moving from mid tier down to entry level. I'd even say that might be borderline on the upper end of entry level on the receiver and speakers.

For comparison, I consider my 5.1 speakers/sub which cost about $1500 to still be in the mid tier range and that's before factoring in TV and receiver.

It's looking like the digital copy of GotG2 that comes with the Bluray will not include the 4K Dolby Vision VUDU version:

Co-sign. Tangled is excellent in 3D, and I'll give a special shout out to Moana which looks magnificent in 3 dimensions. Also, Guardians of the Galaxy and Avatar look great in 3D.

*sigh* Fine Disney, I will bow to your whims and import it even though I already have the US Steelbook.
That's unfortunate if GotG2 doesn't eventually redeem in uhd. :(

Have you checked out the Epson 6040UB?

I'm looking into it as it's WAY more affordable than the Sony (true) 4K projectors, but has been getting incredible reviews.

http://www.projectorcentral.com/epson-6040ub-home-theater-projector-review.htm

There are YouTube clips out there (I fill send them to you if your interested) that showcase the projector.

I wouldn't really go for a 6040ub if your focus is HDR. The HDMI chip they use don't support 18gbps, and the WCG filter cuts too much light.

SDR looks fantastic though.

Okay! So I could actually make the jump to UHD while keeping my current 1080p projector and enjoy the increased color/contrast range.

That's really good to know.

I been using an Oppo UDP-203 + Benq W1070 (1080P) Projector and 150" screen and the results are gorgeous, with UHD Blurays you do benefit from the BT.2020 color space and bitrate, the player handles the downsampling to 1080P flawlessly.

What about 4K digital? Is this a thing yet? I'd rather have digital files, or rip UHD Blurays that I buy to a huge HDD.

Hi guys, quick question.

I see a lot of discussion about the digital redemptions being Dolby vision as opposed to their HDR10 disc counterparts - as a general rule of thumb though, surely the 4K disc has better image quality despite the inferior HDR, right?

That Oppo player sure is expensive. I guess if you want the best picture you gotta pay for it! I'm sure its far better than my Xbox One S but I don't want to spend 600 bones on a standalone player. Maybe this year's Black Friday sales will bless me with a deal.

Oppos never go down in price, unless you buy a refurb and even then it's not much of a discount. The 103D I have now has actually gone up in value. I use that in conjunction with a Sony UBP-X800 UHD player. The reason Oppos are as expensive as they are is build quality, support and they play virtually any file type other than ISO (older versions with original firmware do) for mine. I use it to play all of my digital music collection, including 5.1 albums all FLAC encoded. Oh and it's silent. If/once DV really takes off, I'll get the 203. The only thing I use my Sony X800 for is 4k discs. Everything else is either streaming apps off my LG display or media files on the Oppo.

Thanks! I'm not pulling the trigger on a projector for probably 2 years...and by then I'm sure there will be more realistic 4K options.

I paid $1600 ish for my tv, a 55" Sony 4K HDR android XBR-55X900C and I have a $150ish soundbar (I live in an apartment so more is overkill)

Any examples you have in mind that I could test?

I meant more do files with forced subtitles detect successfully? On all my previous media players, you either have to have subtitles 'on' all the time, or switch on and off. One of my early Dune players was literally the only player I've ever had, that could detect flagged forced subtitles correctly. Basically, if you are watching subtitled films and are not noticing a problem, it must be all good.

Another UHD Blu-ray player with Dolby Vision enters the market: https://www.whathifi.com/news/cambridge-unveils-4k-uhd-blu-ray-player

The CXUHD supports playback of 4K UHD Blu-ray discs and, in addition, HEVC, H.264, VP9 4K and Hi10P video decoding for use with user-generated content from camcorders, smartphones and the like. The CXUHD's pair of USB 3.0 ports, ethernet socket and integrated wi-fi also make playback of networked, hard-drive or stick-stored content simple. HDR is supported, as is Dolby Vision.

I'm not as deluded as I make myself out to be
What have UK people been doing regards the way bigger selection in US? Waiting for UK releases? Importing from Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk international sellers? Any specific tips?

I ask cos I remember when I used to import games using specific websites or retailers was much cheaper than others.

I recently watched the latest Bourne film on UHD, and it just didn't seem like it was 4K. I double and triple checked all of my settings (TV and XB1s, my UHD player). I couldn't figure it out.

Has anyone else seen this UHD? Am I just crazy?

Depends. The THD rating looks abysmal, but if you're not an audiophile you might not care. The video support is good.

That's its maximum effective output power rating. It is not a real world metric. The rating to look at is the rated output. Which is 0.06% THD. Which is fine.

I'm new to the whole 4K wave. I got a samsung ku7000 40 inch TV, so far the only 4k content I've been able to access is some netflix shows. I get the sense that I'm not really seeing the true difference between high quality 1080p and 4k until I get a 4K blu-ray player, is the difference in quality going to be that huge between a 4k youtube or netflix stream and a 4k blu ray? and what calibration settings work best(If anyone else has the same TV)

It's a very accurate disc but it's not a showcase of the format. It's a pretty muted looking film and the UHD is more subdued than the BD is. It's more realistic but not as show-y.

The better question would be, what TV do you have and what other UHD discs have you seen on it?

I have some LG, I can't remember the exact model. 55". I own several other UHD movies and they seem fine. Like X-Men.

If my TV, Blu-ray player and A/V receiver all offer 4k upscaling, do I turn it on on each of them or do I need to find out which does the best job?

Any recommendations for a receiver that can handle Dolby Atmos and Vision?

Seen some options, but curious what the GAF crowd prefers.

If your BD Player ist upscaling to 4k, your Receiver and TV will Just Passthrough the 4k image

This is what I thought while watching The Fifth Element. I actually got up and checked the disc to make sure it wasn't the regular Blu-ray I put in.

Some UHD's are seriously unimpressive.

The Oppo-203 is the 4K UHD player I went with as well. I always wanted the 103 back when that was out but couldn't justify buying one over simply using my PS3 (which was a really solid blu-ray player to be fair). Not many players have Dolby Vision support and the LG is supposedly very noisy with mediocre build quality. The Oppo is neither.

This might be slightly off topic, but does anyone know a good place to get the digital copies for a decent price? I can't afford a 4k tv yet, but I'm trying to build up my digital library in the meantime,
