50 Movies. 50 Books. 1 year. - 2013 Edition

I'm up for the challenge and thanks for the inspiration guys.
50 books actually mean 1 book/week which is quite challenging but still I'll go for it.

Illness is the doctor to whom we pay most heed; to kindness, to knowledge, we make promise only; pain we obey.
I wondered that aswell. Though considering the lenght l'd say yes.

A movie made for TV is still a movie. That there is a series of TV movies that plays during a season is irrelevant, I think. But the way me and some other people are plowing movies getting to 50 won't be a problem regardless of technicalities like this.

1. Savages

Yeah, not even Blake Lively's loveliness could save this from being a pretty average film.

Do movies out at the Cinemas count?

I'm currently unsure how I'll count manga and comics. The first volume has about 175 pages, so that has to count as something. I'll find a way but for now I think I'll go with one volume/10 comicbooks = .5 book

  • Moonrise Kingdom

Man, reading is really slow at the moment, but I'm more or less on vacation next week so hopefully I get one or two books done in that time.

As for the movies, Indie Game was really intersting, though at some point I feared that poor meatboy guy would jump of a bridge or something.
Ijon Tichy is a show very losely based on the star diaries by Stanislaw Lem. And though the production is low budget it has a lot of charm and some really creative sets and costumes. The CGI sucks though.
Moonrise Kingdom is a Wes Anderson movie. I love every Wes Anderson movie. I loved Moonrise Kingdom. Nothing more to say.

Movie 4 - Golden Winter

It was your standard talking pet film... which means I enjoyed it :) Ever since Homeward Bound as a kid I've had a soft spot for these movies. Golden Winter has terrible CG mouths on the dogs to make them talk. I don't know why they bothered, trying to make the mouths move always makes the movies look worse

I'm doing pretty bad on books so far. Time to get reading

You didn't like Taxi Driver? I'm curious to hear your reasoning -- I think it's pretty much the epitome of the noir aesthetic (or neo-noir, however you want to categorize it).

ocean waves is a made for tv film by studio ghibli about a sort of love triangle between three school friends. i was a bit sceptical going in as i hadn't heard much praise for it and made for tv film doesn't inspire much hope but i really enjoyed it, it's a slow grounded drama like 'only yesterday' and it captures adolescent relationships very honestly as well as how people have changed when they leave home and then come back. it's only seventy minutes though, i wish they'd expanded it into a two hour or so full feature.

i'm going to count kill bill as one film as it is meant to be one and my other two films in this update are very short. that said i really enjoyed how both films had a distinct approach to their half of the revenge plot. the first was a very fast moving action flick filled with tons of different ideas and styles chucked at you. it's a bit of a mess with some stuff working better than others but it's an enjoyable ride. the second is a slow moving western with lots of drawn out typical tarantino conversations, briefly punctuated by violence and more human characters, it's not quite as good as his best films in this style but it's still super captivating and i did prefer it to the first volume.

jiro dreams of sushi is a brilliant documentary about a man who has dedicated his entire life to making perfect sushi. he does this by only having ten customers on one table and serving incredibly minimalist dishes made only of the finest ingredients which i thought was pretty cool. i found it inspiring but also a little sad. i wish i had something in my life i was that passionate about and even 1/10th of his incredible work ethic, but i also don't like that he focuses so much on one thing and pushes his children intensely towards that too instead of trying new things and changing as a person.

i've also started reading middlesex by jeffrey eugidines, my first 500+ page book of the year!

In this way it is almost like a critique of Japanese culture and the inherent conservatism that the country seems to display when confronted with new or foreign ideas.

Les Miséables was a truly amazing musical with performances, specifically that of Anne Hathaway's, that I don't think I'll ever forget. I'm not too familiar with the original play or book, but I don't know how much more I could have enjoyed it. Loved it.
