Naw, my first book is something else. Something waaaaaaaay shorter but for some reason I can't read more than a few pages at a time. It really isn't grabbing me at all but I still feel compelled to finish it.

Maybe. ;)

that sounds pretty sucky, i'd just ditch it if i wasn't into it after enough time. when there was a book i had to read for class and wasn't interested i would force myself to read a couple of pages every day and it was awful. never again.

Bakuman Vol 17

Watched The Weather Man and Enter the Dragon (watching ETD right now) tonight. The Weather Man is an awful film, I kind of wish I had changed channel. This thread made me carry on watching it though, I don't know whether that's a good thing or a bad thing.

I'm only like 15 pages in and I've had it on my shelf for 2+ months. It doesn't help that I'm borrowing it from someone and I don't want to just give it back without having read it. :/

 • Rango (2011, dir. Gore Verbinski) - ★★★½ - This is a gorgeous movie. Earlier this year I saw 9 and felt I was watching a digital cartoon--but this ain't no cartoon. Easy and fun with a big heart. Well acted and well constructed. Better than most Pixar-movies.
 • Haywire (2011, dir. Steven Soderbergh) - ★★★ - The spiritual sequel to The Girlfriend Experience. A fun but empty movie. Gina Carano can handle herself both physicaly and theatrically against her well-casted male ensamble.
 • Horrible Bosses (2011, dir. Seth Gordon) - ★★½ - Spacey, Aniston, Farrell and Fox are having the time of their lives. They're the only reason to see this movie.
 • Wrath of the Titans (2012, dir. Jonathan Liebesman) - ★★★ - I like this movie for exactly the same reason I like the God of War-franchise. It takes mythology and takes it as a backdrop for some action and some basic human emotion. Never saw the first one but can't say I'm interested. A fun diversion.
 • Winter's Bone (2010, dir. Debra Granik) - ★★★ - I don't like the white-trash culture and I'm always uncomfortable around it. But, I did like how this Jennifer Lawrence portrays Ree and I was impressed with how bad ass John Hawkes came off.
 • The Station Agent (2003, dir. Thomas McCarthy) - ★★★½ - A bit on the melancholic side. Charming with some good performances.
 • The Island (2005, dir. Michael Bay) - ★★½ - An entertaining sci-fi flick with some decent visuals. Plot is a bit on the thin side but it kept me watching.

TV
 • True Blood (2012, Season 5) - ★★½
 • Game of Thrones (2012, Season 2) - ★★★★

I took most of January to read Sonnets: From Dante to the Present, but I read all of A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich just today. It is my first Solhenitsyn; he's not my favorite Russian author yet, but he was up against some rather stiff competition in Dostoevsky and Nabokov, anyway.

I also read Thomas Holtz's T. rex: Hunter or Scavenger?, but it is a children's ... well I hate to call it a book, maybe a pamphlet. I am not counting it, though it is still going on my Goodreads! :D

And I need to watch more movies. :|

Other than the bad special effects, these were good movies, and fairly accurate adaptations of Pratchett's work. I also watched Groundhog Day today, but that doesn't count because it's a repeat.

New book:

[*] The Trunk Key by Carolyn Nash. ★★½ -- Picked this up as a cheap Kindle single. I guess you get what you pay for, because the writing was quite plain and repetitive. I felt like the author told everything from their own perspective, instead of giving the characters and voice.

The A-Team wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. It's a fairly good mindless movie to watch.

The Good Shepherd is an interesting movie with a bad ending. The ending just didn't wrap anything up. I enjoyed the movie though and the progression from 1939 to 1961 proved interesting enough to keep me watching when I was thinking about turning it off.

Cancer Ward is one of the finest novels in all Russian literature, imo.

22. amour

django was fun. bit slack and about as nuanced a portrayl of slavery as you'd expect, but very entertaining. waltz basically plays the same character as in basterds but it's so good.

searching for sugarman was AMAZING. it's a documentary about an obscure american folk rock artist who inexplicably took off in south africa. such a lovely film. i bought the soundtrack on itunes the moment i finished it too.

cache was a very unsettling and puzzling psychological drama about a family who start getting sent unknown tapes of them being recorded. i don't really know what to make of it, gonna need to give its ideas some thought, but the style and mystery made for hypnotic viewing.

sputnik sweetheart is a brief story about a friends romantic relationship and sudden dissappearance that mostly serves about meditation on loneliness and how much we truly know about other people written in the typical murakami style. it was a nice easy read and genuinely sad but i think he's done most of the elements in it better in his other work.

prometheus. fuck off lindelof.

the lives of others is a german film about a cold, lonely agent who conducts a surveillance of an optimistic, extroverted playwright for the soviet police and how this exposure to another life changes him. i thought it was very well made and was moved by its humanity. it's quite theatrical in structure though which makes some of the character development feel a bit rushed.

good omens was good fun. humor style reminded me a lot of douglas adams.

wreck it ralph was quite entertaining. the main character is great and all the videogame stuff makes it feel unique, shame the story feels so boiler plate outside of that and not all the jokes land that well. highlight was the paperman short before though <3

amour is emotionally grueling and brilliant and just destroyed me. my favourite of the best picture nominees that i've seen thus far.

I watched Predators and Breathless yesterday. I only watched Predators while waiting for Breathless to come on TV but I was pleasently surprised at how good it is. Adrien Brody is way better than I thought he would be.

Breathless is an amazing film. It has lived up to my high expectations for South Korean cinema and completely rejustified my belief that South Korea has the best film industry in the world right now.

Finished another book by Kim Young-ha. It's a pity that the works of his that have been translated to English seem to be his worst. I really like his work, he reads like a less surreal Murakami with prose that doesn't suck when he's good.

 2. The Cabin In the Woods ★★★★☆

..I noticed by the pace I'm going, I'll never be able to reach the goal. It's not like I have better things to do. Better read and watch more and laze around less.

New book:

[*]Sourcery by Terry Pratchett. ★★★½ -- One of the most interesting Discworld setups so far, but it feels like it went absolutely nowhere. It ends with little consequence or resolution. Felt a bit like a filler book in the series.

Was not expectingTriangle to be what it was. Based on everything I had seen beforehand I was expecting something completely different. It was just a lot of fun to watch, and has a particularly brutal moment that really sealed the deal for me. It certainly has the type of plot that you will never be able to piece together fully which always annoys someone like me, but I think it works enough.

Illness is the doctor to whom we pay most heed; to kindness, to knowledge, we make promise only; pain we obey.

Books
 • The God Delusion (2006) by Richard Dawkins - ★★★ - American christianity (and most other religions too) is a scary thing. And Dawkins has a few points, but this book is a mess most of the time. It's a long rant that every now and then makes some good points.

 • Control (2007, dir. Anton Corbijn) - ★★★★ - Perfect compliment to This is England. Realised stunningly in black and white with some great performances from everyone involved.

 • The Cave (2013, Double Fine, PC) - ★★★
 • Quantum Conundrum (2012, Airtight Games, PC) - ★ - Ouch. I held out as far as I could. This is just bad in so many ways. The puzzles are boring, the jokes are meaningless and the art design is empty. There's a massive disconnect between the player and the character you're playing. John de Lancie is wasted as the professor. Compare it to Portal and you have a monologue about Portal.
 • God of War III (2010, Santa Monica Studio, PS3) - ★★★ - Not as good as the two previous God of Wars but a damn fine action game in its own right. A bit boring toward the end and the tension has trouble building. From a narrative point of view it's all over the place. Finally finished it. One less game on the backlog.

★ = Bad, ★★ = Okay, ★★★ = Good, ★★★★ = Very good, ★★★★★ = Brilliant
